It's more probably intended to be pronounced Toriko, which is a mixture of the Japanese words for "bird" (Tori) and "cat" (Neko). Of course it's written "Trico" right in the opening, but due to the fact that it was placed with the Latin scientific and pseudo-scientific names of other animals, it's still possible that Trico was specifically written to be a Latinized version of Toriko. This all purely conjecture of course.

Is "neko" really there in the name? It doesn't seem to me that many ppl would think of that connotation, since "ko" is a common end for words and names in Japanese. Also more importantly, "toriko" means something like "captive" to begin with.

Really it comes down to them often having the sense of humor of children. I've always found this shit annoying, and they are far from the only ones who do it. Pokemon Sun, however, feels like trying to convince a brick to walk. Nothing happens for 10 minutes.
