Chris Patten, Hong Kong’s last governor, handed the former colony back to China on 1 July 1997 to be ruled with a degree of autonomy under a system called “one country, two systems”.
Subscribe to The Guardian ► is.gd/subscribe...
Anger at China’s refusal to grant genuine democracy to the former British colony sparked an unprecedented 79-day street protest in 2014. Here he reflects on leaving Hong Kong and what the game plan should be going forward.

Theres a lot of British bashing going on here in the comments... The general argument seems to be that "well Britain ruled over Hong Kong so how hypocritical is that". What you are failing to forget are all the economic and social freedoms that were once a part of everyday British life (capitalism, freedom of press...etc), is now being questioned in Hong Kong. You cannot down talk the British when these values are being removed and ultimately oppressed by Beijing.

+Sze Ming Lo You're extremely naive if you think London would have approved of such a plan, either Sir Grantham kills such an idea in its infancy or he would be out of a job. Sir Grantham never had the power to fundamentally alter the political landscape of HK, such power lay in West Minster.

Sze Ming Lo All I'm saying is that the British are hypocrites. They're whining about China's not giving HK democracy when they never allowed the people of Hong Kong to elect its leader during their colonial rule. The idea of democracy only occurred to them when HK was going to be handed over to the PRC.

@amphibiouscamel506
@amphibiouscamel506 7 жыл бұрын
+Sze Ming Lo And what I'm telling you is you give the governor of Hong Kong too much credit with regards to what he can and cannot do. You need to understand how a government actually operates, if Hong Kong even were to try at direct elections, this would require an act of parliament, which is West Minster. The Brits had over 150 years to trial democracy in Hong Kong, and they never did. Yet they expect others to implement what they themselves did not do in just 20 years.

HK's journey to social reforms, capitalism, etc, took quite a while. It was first ruled under Victoria's rule (Victoria Park, Victoria Peak, etc.). And after Edward VII, George V, Edward VIII, George VI (The Queen's dad), during Elizabeth II rule, she inherited the Commonwealth that was part of the process during George V's rule, and tries actively learn about her British Commonwealth of Nations. Before her, every other monarch after Victoria didn't really reform their realm as a capitalist, free trade state. In fact, there wasn't really an idea of Commonwealth until after the second decade of the 20th century. So after making the Commonwealth a volunteer organization, many social structural improvements started to commence. Before then, in the late 19th century, HK had been basically a shipping and trading ports for smugglers and drug dealers. After making the Commonwealth of Nations and adding more former colonies there, and establishing humane rule, free healthcare, and free trade among Commonwealth members, Governor Murray started a series of social reforms such as housing projects (my mom grew up in the projects, just like everyone else), transportations, free press. And the last Governor, Chris Patten, try to do electoral reforms. It was hard to do this when China was breathing their neck every second and June 4th.....since the Sino-British Joint Declaration. This is why many still wanted to be part of British rule.

HK people talk about the "good old times" because they do not know how to stand up for their own future. Objectively speaking, HK is by far the freest city in China. I feel sad when people keep spreading alarmist rumours about what somebody at the CCP Liaison Office "might have said" or "might do to us if we try too hard." Even President Xi is visibly annoyed at the prevalence of this attitude. Hope CE Lam can lead HK away from that backwards, self-destructive mindset. Let's face it, being a second-class colony is NOT fashionable anymore. HK has the status--it needs to be itself and stop looking to the past. Write yourself a new story, before Beijing tries to write it for you.

Are you joking? China has invaded a heck ton of places and glamorized it with phrases like "civilizing the babarians". The thing that makes western better than China is that at least the western admitted they did imperialism and colonialism in the past while the Chinese, even the elites, are in deep denial about it. If the Chinese call out the western for imperialism and colonialism, then the Chinese are nothing other than hypocrites.

Wherever from where British left they always left timebombs, seeds for future conflicts as it was in africa and india, as by dividing a once one whole country one society into different parts either by religion, territory or political system when it was time to leave. Divide and rule, feed on wars. I wondered what was the catch of brits in leaving Hong Kong? And here of course I got an answer: "until 2047 it must have different political system" haha. resurgence of various kind of protesters activists, etc. so predictable. Brits are architects of all those instabilities and people' misfortunes, orientals ought to learn from those devious devils a trick or two, even though they are now under the shadow of USA

It was the same with other imperialist countries. The French left Vietnam (then called French Into-China), and soon came one of the most violent wars since WW2.
