In the harsh Northwestern Namib desert roam a unique population of elephants They are not a subspecies but have through learned behaviour adapted to an extremely arid environment of less than 150mm of annual rainfall.
There are less than 150 remaining and have been reduced to 5 sub populations along the ephemeral rivers north of the Brandberg.
Calve mortality is high....in the Ugab region only one baby survived in the last ten years.
