The Last of the Roaming Desert Giants

In the harsh Northwestern Namib desert roam a unique population of elephants They are not a subspecies but have through learned behaviour adapted to an extremely arid environment of less than 150mm of annual rainfall.
There are less than 150 remaining and have been reduced to 5 sub populations along the ephemeral rivers north of the Brandberg.
Calve mortality is high....in the Ugab region only one baby survived in the last ten years.

tyvm for this video containing many educational infos. however, we didn't learn anything about the causes for all these calf deaths. most had very experienced mothers considering their age making it unlikely the mothers made a fatal mistake. you mentioned scarcity of food and water. is that due to climate change as this part of the world has been very arid for a long time. or do humans prevent wild animals from getting to water sources they had access to in earlier decades?

embreiss...thank you for your comment Currently nobody really knows. It could be a couple of factors...The drought is certainly contibuting but my theory is, a lack of diversity of available plantmaterial for the elephants which result in a deminished gut microbiome and that causes a nutritional deficiancy > affect fetus >calve mortallity. This theory can be tested by comparing the microbiome in the dung of cows that succesfully birth and raised calves with cows of same age and area that did not...but it is not done yet.

@@DesertMatriarch2911 if your are right about this then plant diversity must have significantly decreased over the years. that might be a parameter much easier verified than comparing microbiome in the dung. you probably already have some missing plants in mind, right?
