Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained. As requested, today we’ll be diving into the HBO adaptation of the Last of Us by Craig Mazin (the creator of the Chernobyl miniseries) and Neil Druckmann (co-president of Naughty Dog, known for his work on Uncharted and The Last of Us.
It’s safe to say that video game adaptations rarely work. Most productions are doomed from the get go, with companies merely wanting to exploit an IP and the fanbase to turn over some quick cash.
Then you have the issue of transposing a gaming experience where the viewer is an active participant in the world and story, to one where they are a passive viewer.
Then there’s problems with cramming 20 hours of gaming content, DLC’s, easter eggs, character motivations and objectives, conflict, and complex storytelling elements into a movie with a run time of 90 minutes.
Spread across 9 episodes, Season 1 of the Last of Us avoids many of these pitfalls in a mostly faithful adaptation. Like the game, we follow Joel and Ellie in a harrowing journey across the post-apocalyptic wasteland, trying to find the proverbial and symbolic light at the end of the tunnel.
Traveling across abandoned cities that were destroyed 20 years ago due to a global cordyceps outbreak, the two learn about each other, the new world setting they must traverse, its many factions and organisations vying for power, the cordyceps infection, the infected, in addition to there being hope for a cure.
In this video, we’re going to breakdown all these elements and more.

@@MisterUnknown707 they weren’t safe but they weren’t nearly in as much danger. In the game it’s infected all the way through. The subway, then museum, Bill’s town, the high school, the hotel basement, the sewers, the city. Only around Tommy’s does it seem like there’s no infected for a while only bandits. But then there’s the college campus dorms, the saw mill, and the underpass leading up to the Salt Lake City hospital. I may have forgotten a few but for anyone who hasn’t played the game just know there was no shortage of infected encounters.

I wouldn't have watched the show if it was filled with lots of infected. I have seen too many zombie, undead, or monster type shows or movies. @@enadegheeghaghe6369 that is what the story focuses on though they have to constantly be around for instance when she meets the hunters in the snow when she shoots that deer there is a massive massive attack on her at the saw mill they are always a threat them and other humans but we barely see it why? Because they didn’t add more episodes it felt wayyy too condensed sadly the game always reminds you of that threat but yet focuses on the bonding between joel and ellie as well

I always had an issue with how they were just going to kill their only immune subject without taking the actual time to run more tests. Cuz what if the one thing they were gonna do, didn’t work what so ever? Can’t do anything else unless you somehow come across another immune person now 😂
@furiousgamerxz5141
@furiousgamerxz5141 Жыл бұрын
(SPOILERS FOR THOSE WHO HAVEN'T FINISHED THE SHOW) I'm pretty sure Marlene knows exactly why Ellie is immune and probably would be willing to try and recreate it by forcing women to get pregnant and than bit as they are giving birth if she wasn't able to get anything from Ellie.
@diegochavez7203
@diegochavez7203 Жыл бұрын
That's the point. While Joel may have ruined all chances of there being a cure, that's the thing. It was just a chance. There was no guarantee a vaccine could be made. The second game flashback shows Marlene being pissed at the surgeon because that's what he told her, that it was a chance, not a guarantee. She cared for Ellie and didn't want her to die for just a "chance," but her sense of duty won her over to let it happen. Joel couldn't do that.
@jasonreyna7615
@jasonreyna7615 Жыл бұрын
With the fungus growing in the brain it would have most likely killed her regardless, but because it was just a chance one can see why Joel did what he did...you kill her thinking her brain was the key to a cure when it wasn't. The person would most likely have to be born the same way ellie was
@Josh-py9rq

In the game at the hospital you find letters showing that they had found other immune kids and they ended up dying and still no cure was found. Now if the fireflies could have experimented on ellies blood without killing her I would have been all for it same with joel 😂 but killing ellie just felt soo extreme and humanity as we see is still continuing to survive in pockets out in the world. So I do think Joel made the best decision he could here it did seem like the fireflies were rushing things without thinking it through.

Honestly I think it was better for Joel to have just saved Ellie. Not only were they just going to kill her without giving her an option, but they were doing it to just test a theory. They didn't even know if it would work, and if it didn't they would've lost their only immune person. They were shortsighted and foolish, it was better for them to just die so Ellie could live and hopefully end up in the hands of more capable and empathetic people.

Absolutely loved the game, and the show was awesome. And I get the whole “minimizing infected to focus on the human etc etc” HOWEVER I would say if they kept a few more of the big infected battle set pieces from the game (especially the tunnel scene right before the finale) I think it would’ve better highlighted the difficulty of the journey that the game portrayed and made the dramatic & brutal Joel scene at the end hit harder. As it was filmed, the last episode felt abrupt. I enjoyed it throughly, but would love to know if anyway had the same thought on the finale.

A series allows for potentially a limitless list of guest stars an series regulars an supporters/semi support characters both huge stars an new faces to any screen alike. Just so long as they KEEP this formula, don't do anything too absurd too much or play a trope out too much, an STAY true to the source material

The scientist does not talk a single word about cordyceps... he speaks about fungi in general. So I know it’s fictional and all, but how exactly does cooking fungus at 300 degrees not kill it? Oh right, it’s the super duper ultra fictional heat resistant fungus. Also, people running have beaten guns throughout history. It’s well known that people who run and throw fists are much more deadly than an enemy equipped with gunpowder and coordination.

@@bipolarexpress9827 talking generally, some organisms ( that are quite fragile themselves) produce spores that can survive extreme conditions like extreme heat or cold. Some creatures can survive in boiling water near deep sea hydrothermal vents or hot water springs for example. Others can endure a lack of water for years. There are trees that produce seeds which can survive forest fires and germinate afterwards. Research on the ISS has demonstrated that some micro organisms can survive exposure to the vacuum of Space. There are even organisms that thrive in highly radioactive environments like Chernobyl nuclear power plant. Try and Google Deinococcus radiodurans. There are lots of extremophiles on this planet. Yes the show is fictional but I don't think an Infectious organism surviving an oven is totally out of the realm of possibility. To quote one of my favourite movies; "life finds a way "

@@bipolarexpress9827you do know that there are fungi species out there that have been shown to survive extremely high heats right? In one study spores of the Pestalotiopsis sp. were able to withstand a sudden and steep increase in temperature from 20 degree Celsius to 115 degree Celsius. And even continued to germinate and spread after being exposed to heats of 115 degrees Celsius for 2 hours. So completely realistic.

There seems to be a slight need for readjust in the later stages of infection. The bloaters being heard protectors makes sense, runners being strictly a stage to quickly spread makes sense, and stalkers being smartest form tactically spreading the infection makes sense. But clickers and bloaters massacring viable host targets doesn't fit the "infected are vessels for spreading" that the fungus originates from. is it just a case that once at the clicker stage the infection spreading process is seen as "effective" and the zombies switch to elimination of threats to the virus instead of reproduction?

Many fungi have spores that can survive extreme conditions. Conditions that would kill the fungus itself. In any case part of the premise of the show is that the Cordyceps mutated so it could tolerate higher temperatures

@@jacemenard9168 Mate, re the first TLOU, if you want a solid 20+ hours of gaming perfection, I urge you to do it. I have the Remastered version on PS4 and it looks stunning There is also the DLC mission, unlockables, Factions multiplayer, a lot of replay value for trying to collect the artefacts, letters, conversations etc, which flesh out the story and worldbuilding. The second came in for a lot of stick because of a certain part of it's narrative, but if you can see past that, it's even bigger, with longer story and looks absolutely amazing on both PS4 and 5. It also has a lot of replay potential. If you can afford it, and you aren't going to get yourself into debt, I'd say go for it as there really is nothing else like it on any console I've yet to come across. Need any more info, gimme a shout back 👍

I’m really glad they brought Neil as a creative director, I also love how they made sure to check in with him on what should happen instead of taking liberties like so many other video game adaptations COUGH halo COUGH. I’m honestly glad that movies/tv shows are bringing the OG crew of each respective game. I think when Arcane came out, it set a new standard for faithful adaptations that have come out(except Halo) like Cyberpunk Edgerunners and now this show. I’m really excited to see how they do season 2 and how Neil might change it since there is a couple things they could change.

I actually enjoyed this season. I was very sceptical going in, but the changes they made from the game really felt organic. Although i could have been with Ellies episode. That felt too much of a pace-changer. But no spoiler for the next season? I won't but i also don't wanna see it. Because as much as i loved the first game, i have never hated a game as i hated the second one. Only if they completely re-write the story i'll watch it 🤷🏽‍♂️ But it was fun to see scenes from the game, on the show. So i'll say thanks for that, at least 🙏🏽👍🏽

I think Joel lying to Ellie definitely is a trust breaker…but the alternative was even worse Fireflies couldnt guarantee a cure…let alone how to distribute it…on top of the fact that an extremist organization holding that much “power” over a potential cure to an infection that literally ravaged the world?! Oh nah.. My vote was for Joel all the way, despite the audacious nature of Part II. Had the fireflies given Ellie a choice or at the very least taken her blood or spinal fluid in some way that wouldn’t been a better turn. But plot is gunna plot 🤷🏾‍♂️ Thank you F.C.E for making this video, you have the best editing and story telling for these and I can’t to see you cover Season 2

And you got the whole series. The infected were no longer the real threat, it was humanity on itself. Also not spoken about is that if the fireflys got the cure, they would probably keep it for themselves to take over whatever was left. I caught the show in pieces after episode 4 where they got to KC as I felt with someone with Joel's skills, it was incredibly stupid to go near a city with Ellie.

Interestingly the Games take place 10 years into our own future in 2033 to 2038. There's no real loss with setting the series initially in 2003 then 2023, but when I see vehicles in the series that were not manufactured until 2006/7, o kinda wish they had just kept the original era from the games rather than make it harder for themselves.
