The Last of Us Part II is a 2020 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and published by Sony Interactive Entertainment for the PlayStation 4. Set five years after The Last of Us (2013), the game focuses on two playable characters in a post-apocalyptic United States whose lives intertwine: Ellie, who sets out for revenge after suffering a tragedy, and Abby, a soldier who becomes involved in a conflict between her militia and a religious cult. The game is played from the third-person perspective and allows the player to fight human enemies and cannibalistic zombie-like creatures with firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth.
Development of The Last of Us Part II began in 2014, soon after the release of The Last of Us Remastered. Neil Druckmann returned as creative director, co-writing the story with Halley Gross. The game's themes of revenge and retribution were inspired by Druckmann's experiences growing up in Israel. Ashley Johnson reprises her role as Ellie, while Laura Bailey was cast as Abby. Their performances included the simultaneous recording of motion and voice. The developers pushed the technical capabilities of the PlayStation 4 during development. Gustavo Santaolalla returned to compose and perform the score. Development reportedly included a crunch schedule of 12-hour workdays.
Following some delays, partly due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Last of Us Part II was released on June 19, 2020. It received critical acclaim, with praise for its characters, gameplay, performances, and visual fidelity, though the narrative and the representation of a transgender character polarized critics and players. It was the subject of review bombing on Metacritic, and discourse surrounding the game was observed to have become adversarial. Part II is one of the best-selling PlayStation 4 games and the fastest-selling PlayStation 4 exclusive, with over four million units sold in its release weekend. It holds the record for most Game of the Year awards, and received multiple other accolades from awards shows and gaming publications.
The Last of Us Part II is an action-adventure game played from a third-person perspective featuring elements of the survival horror genre.[1][2] The player traverses post-apocalyptic environments such as buildings and forests to advance the story. The player can use firearms, improvised weapons, and stealth to defend against hostile humans and cannibalistic creatures infected by a mutated strain of the Cordyceps fungus.[3] Control intermittently switches between Ellie and Abby;[1] the player also briefly controls Joel in the opening sequence.[4] The nimble nature of the player character introduces platforming elements to the game, allowing the player to jump and climb to traverse environments and gain advantages during combat.[5] The player can break glass objects such as windows to access certain areas or obtain supplies.[6] Some areas in the game are navigated by horse or boat.[3][7]

When Tommy and Jesse find Ellie in the aquarium you don't see Tommy's face at first, but you see him say "Ellie, Ellie! You ok?" Or something like that, that isn't Tommy's voice actor though, it's Troy Baker, the voice of Joel, Ellie's so far gone and delusional that she started to hear Joel's voice in Tommy's, just a cool detail not a lot of people noticed.

It was REALLY close to home. I know what you mean. I think it might have been too close to home for some, OR that is was too far away from their world to understand some of the actions. I've seen a lot of people say that there's "major plot holes throughout the game" based on character actions. Those aren't plot holes. That's humanity you're seeing more than anything. There's convenient moments like in any story, but overall, it's so relentlessly human. I really hope Naughty Dog and other companies continue to push really interesting narratives that challenge people (for a reason, not for the sake of it). This is without a doubt a 10/10 for me. But so is something like God Of War, which is closer to a regular action game. But the story matters and is executed perfectly. I think both of these games show what the future holds, in two different seses. And I'm sorry for your loss, of course. I know the exact emotion you're talking about.

I also loved how Abby was basically if Sarah was the one to live through the beginning of the outbreak instead of Joel. Wide-eyed, and optimistic in the beginning, but grew to have all the same hatred that Joel did at the world for taking a loved one away from him, and decided to make them pay it back in blood. I also like how Abby and Joel are given keepsakes from Jerry and Sarah, who later died during their flashbacks, that symbolize a significant theme of their respective games, the broken watch represents how Joel will never move on from his trauma, while coins represent concrete memories that Abby must hold on to in order to realize and remember who she can truly be.

This game is just pure genius in the way it teaches the lesson that there are always 2 sides to every story. Joel wasn’t as innocent as he seemed. He was very flawed and did many horrible things as likeable as he was. What Joel did was indeed extremely selfish and screwed over all humanity. I love and respect how ND is not afraid to take risks and make its audience feel uncomfortable. We realize Abby was just as human as Ellie too. This game reminds us of just how quick society is to judge others and believe rumors without knowing all the details. And I love the way it wraps with every main character finally finding peace and closure within themselves.

I was so invested into Ellie’s story that when it cut and put me into Abby’s POV I wasn’t interested. I felt myself rushing her part with the expectation off it being short but it kept going and the more time I spent with Abby I became more invested in her story. It opened my eyes into the world of the last of us and even our own world. When we play video games we are presented with a black and white world but TLOU2 is the first time the world I was playing in was truly grey. It wasn’t just a “We are the bad guys actually” that a lot of games go for but a “Neither is wrong” and it’s something people don’t want to accept.
@MrPyroCrab
@MrPyroCrab 2 жыл бұрын
New Vegas came out 10 years prior and had a far more nuanced and morally gray world than TLOU ever did. People still viciously argue to this day which ending was the right one. Dark Souls also had a very morally grey story its just that you actually had to figure out you were being duped. "B-but it makes you feel bad for killing peepul!!1!" So did MGS3 in 2004 and that game gave you non lethal options so that any deaths in it were actually your fault. TLOU2 did not invent the concept of moral ambiguity, I will never understand why people praise this game so much for half assing shit other games did better years ago.

@@billcipher3946 agreed, personally i actually dont think TLOU1 was that good. Joel and Ellie's character dynamic and respective arcs were well done but truthfully it was the only thing that made the game notable. The concept of fungus zombies was genuinely really clever but painfully underutilised. Stealth is a simplistic facsimile of games like MGS or Thief, the survival horror aspects are a pale imitation of what resident evil offers. TLOU1 was a not very good game that had its charm. TLOU2 is that same game but instead of the charm its just high on its own pretentiousness.

When I first played this game, I enjoyed everything up till the moment I was playing as Abby. I definitely believe this is a game that's hard to play through in one sitting because it's mentally and emotionally exhausting, so upon the Abby switch, I put my controller down and went to bed. I played the next day as Abby thinking "Woah, it's kinda weird I'm walking through their base like I did with Ellie in the beginning." Then I started thinking "Woah. Kinda weird Abby is getting her own inventory system..." Then it really struck me that I'd be playing as her for just as long, if not longer than I did with Ellie. But by the time I dealt with the Rat King in the hospital, I was coming around to Abby. I even felt a little pride in her when she tried to cross the crane to get the tools Yara needed. She was willing to face that fear. Long story short, and unpopular opinion I know, but by the time Abby was heading to the theatre, I was ready to kill EVERYBODY in there. I loved all the characters on Ellie's side and I loved the first game; I really do, but after playing through Abby, and seeing what her 3 days had been like compared to Ellie's, I feel like with a 1 to 1 ratio, Abby had a MUCH harder 3 days than Ellie did. There's deeper context to my earlier thought of being ready to kill everyone on Ellie's side as Abby, but I'll leave my comment as this for now.

Thank you. I didn't believe or imagine or I couldn't get the idea that someone could reach that thought, for a while I thought it possible because millions of players went through this heartbreaking story and it always came to mind, "and what if someone supported more to abby" and I always thought that there could be a very, very tiny minority like 5 people kind of minority who would think that way, but more than that I don't think so, it's impossible it doesn't enter my head... but with your comment now I think it's possible that there are more than 5 or even more than a hundred people who felt that way and I thank you, I thank you for showing me how divisive this game is once again, and in a way that I had never thought of before , because as you yourself say, it is an unpopular opinion, but you are not the only person in the world who thinks that way, you are just the only one who got to write in a comment that few can read and see or even conceive of that possibility of opinion. Thanks for blowing my mind about how meaningful this franchise is to me and showing me that the game went above and beyond and made at least a handful of people feel that way. I don't know why but it's something that when I read it was a before and after, because I didn't think it was even possible. but now i know it is. thanks

@Parveen Kumar - did you play it after the 60fps update by chance? I would think it would be a lot easier for you now. I felt similar after replaying TLOU in 60fps prior to the sequel coming out, and then TLOU2 being 30fps. It just felt jarring and turning the camera too quickly caused the occasional wooziness. But now it’s smooth as hell, so definitely worth another look in case you get the itch to go back!

I finally got to play this and part 1 this month and binged part 1 straight into part 2. By the end as the credits were rolling and that phenomenal score and song is playing. I had to sit there and ponder about a lot of things about myself, about life, about living through 2020 and right now everything going on in America as the pandemic is still going on and not getting better in certain places. And it occurred to me that The Last of Us refers as much to that last spark of humanity to be a good person as the last of us survivors because going’s through this world you see Joel and Abby regain their humanity while Ellie’s is burnt out of her

Everything about the game is pretty amazing, but Abby is just a hateable character, it’s her face that pisses me off. Plus I don’t like that they tried to make me like her, I understand it but the thing is you don’t kill one of my favourite characters in all of gaming then just expect me to be manipulated in to like Abby, I respect the effort but they went the wrong way about it with me. I’m attached to Joel so much because they did such a good job with him in the first game, so to try and make me like Abby more by essentially trying to break the illusion I already have of Joel from the first game just was never gonna work, and that’s really a compliment of the first game.

I sat in stunned silence when the credits rolled. For several minutes (and then Ellie and Joel sang to me and made it better). Not that they’re particularly interesting or anything, I just feel like I had so much to think about when I played. Maybe that’s the difference though when you’re playing it for an audience, who would be bored if you sat there with your jaw hanging on the floor while credits rolled.

Having dodged spoilers for a year and a half of Joel's demise. I understood the rage that divided the fanbase had with this entry. However, I decided to play the game after having bought it two months after its release, I held myself from September 2020 until March 2022 when I decided I had the time to focus on the game, and the hate discourse in the gaming community toned down. Man, I wish I would have played this sooner rather than later. What an emotional journey that made me sympathize and feel regret in my actions when Ellie and Abby had to fight each other in end. I was scared, nervous, and someway nauseated because killing at this moment felt unnecessary and inhumane. Thanks to this review and a few others on KZfaq (Dunkey and Girlfriends Reviews), they managed to express what I felt and made me feel humane when it came to not wanting to fight or kill Abby in the end.

What a phenomenal video. Really appreciate what you did with this and truly enjoyed how it was handled. This game is, for me, the highest level of art the medium of video game has ever reached. If I could only hand down one example of this art form down to posterity, it would be this. Even film cannot force the viewer to feel the way this game forces the player to feel, because film is passive. Only video games can put the individual into the narrative as an active participant and no other game so effectively makes the player go through emotions that so closely resemble what the characters do, which is why this medium can surpass other forms of art if more artists make bold decisions like Naughty Dog has.

@@goavs7438 there's absolutely no reason she can't patch things up, the tommy being resentful was just a contradiction of his actions from the beginning but is still something that can be patched up, no one gives a fuck about Jesse and he's never even brought up again after his death, and Jackson would definitely welcome her back. Where do you think she was headed at the end? It's not like she killed Abby anyway so the whole point of her leaving is made moot. TLOU2 is probably my favorite PS4 game of the generation, but only after playing the game a 2nd time. There are so many intricate details in Ellie's and Abby's storylines, and foreshadowing instances which are easy to miss in a first playthrough. In terms of gameplay, I didn't really care much for TLOU1's gameplay, but TLOU2 improved it in almost every way.

Ellie says that she is ready to forgive Joël, AND, the movie Ellie was talking about to see with Joël at the very begining of the game was the first step of forgiveness. Even if she was mad of the lie she lived by, she still loved Joël, it is just a conflict in her mind. She knows how much he loves her and that he decided to save her because she is so important to him. As a stupid example, that's not because one of your parents prevented you to do something that you will hate them for the rest of your life. At the end of the day you still love them and pretty much always end up forgiving them.

The gameplay definitely improved from TLOU 1 but I think that wasn't really a high bar to beat. Shooting is still kinda wonky to me, similar to the first game and very similar to Days Gone which shooting I did not enjoy. They added prone and dodging which are welcoming additions but imo it feels the same as the first. It is noticably different with the visuals and better animation but overall it feels the same if that makes sense. So I wasn't that impressed with the gameplay, I think people are overrating it. Most of the gameplay is just you walking around and mindlessly looting for supplies and that's it. Gets very boring a lot of the times. But that may just be me

I thought this game was amazing and feel that a lot of other reviewers (whilst entitled to their own critiques and opinions) were biased to want a game that met their expectations and hopes rather than appreciate the game appropriately based on the game itself and the reasons it was created the way it was, as you so rightfully pointed out in this video. That would end the cycle of violence right there lev would’ve died without Abby so she wouldn’t have came back there’s that and then they completely destroy Ellie’s relationship between Joel and tommy the only 2 characters we gave af about besides Ellie in the first game nobody gets a good ending what so ever this game was pointless it could’ve been done in such a better way give Joel a better death make Abby a half fucking decent human being and give her a better motive as well as more a story instead of saving a trans kid that they awkwardly force in our face the relationship we saw in the first game that grew was destroyed by this shitty game we all knew they would have a falling out Bc it’s Ellie she would’ve found out the truth but they could’ve done so much more if they kept Joel alive or atleast a lot longer then they did. On top of all of that ion understand how these little minded ppl can actually like abbys character just Bc they tried to make those gang characters “likeable” bro manny fucks teachers like lol ok? Good for him I still hate that mf tho Abby was saved BY FUCKING JOEL and she tortured him?fuck that bitch for life she couldve just taken his leg so he can never walk again bc her bitch ass dad even said he wouldnt let his daughter die like ellie wouodve died and then he gave joel no choice he didnt move so we were forced to kill him, his fault he should've understood Joel's motive. that being said theres a million other things but ill give those few the spotlight, they couldve done better way better instead of shitting on the players who love these characters and not just senseless violence and the feeling of emptiness

At the time I was going through some personal things and health issues but the TLOU was my favorite game and there was nothing that was going to stop me from playing the sequel. I didn’t have fun with the sequel, but I knew that it wasn’t meant to be fun, it was meant to be a journey and a lesson in putting yourself in your enemies shoes and having true empathy. Amazing video. You perfectly described my thoughts on the game. So many people were immediately blinded by the fact that Joel died, then they didn't want to experience the game further and labeled the game as bad just because of his death even when the game had so much to offer. I also experienced all the emotional roller coasters, from not accepting the fact that Joel really died, hating Abby and the fact we had to play as her for so long, but after finishing the game and watched so many analysis videos about the game I feel like the storytelling in the game is great. This is the first game that actually shook me to the core and I absolutely enjoyed it. I wish more games in the future would be able to take this path, making the players question the morality and play as morally grey characters

I thought the ending was great. After, playing for the 3rd or 4th. I think Ellie's choice at the end made perfect sense. I don't think Ellie and Abby really even think about each other much and even on some kind of hateful level. It seems like the fanbase wants to turn into some kind of shonen anime rivalry when it isn't really. That's why the discussion about Abby has become a ''Team Ellie'' and '' Team Abby'' when it isn't really. Abby didn't even notice Ellie much until the theater. Even then when she told Abby about her immunity, Abby was flabbergasted. She figured it was just Tommy going after them. Abby never gave much thought to Ellie. It is similar for Ellie. Who is and why Abby did doesn't really matter to Ellie. Her rage to kill Abby seemed more like it was about unconscious guilt dealing with the fallout of their relationship after he told her the truth about what he did at the hospital. Ellie probably felt like she played a hand in his death by alienating him by keeping her distance from him. She destroyed a chance to connect with him and create so many great memories. That's why all of the flashbacks during Ellie's section deal with the points as Ellie and Joel's relationship keep deteriorating. Chasing after Abby was an outlet to deal with that frustration. So, that is what fuels her psyche Abby isn't even on her mind when she's trying to drown her. So, Last of Us part 2 is more about than revenge based on grief than retribution. She realized that killing Abby wouldn't have to get over the guilt and regret of alienating Joel so she let Abby go.

Abby's section not only mirrors Ellie's arc and the whole story of TLOU but it is also a continuation of Ellie's development. Abby starts out where Ellie is at when the screen fades to black. She has had her revenge, she pulled trough. And now we see what that did to her. It didn't make her feel better, it didn't bring her dad back. And it wouldn't bring back Joel for Ellie If she went down the same path. The last section is so heart wrenching because we got to see what really made Abby have purpose again. It was Lev. Someone she found to care for. Someone to give her hope. Ellie is having the same with Dina and JJ but she didn't get her closure like Abby. It is frustrating and saddening but Ellie just has to see it trough to get to the same realization. What kept me glued to the screen was the uncertainty If she would. I played the whole Santa Barbara section in one go because I just had to see how Ellie would close off her story. I almost threw up, felt nauseous when she battled with Abby in the water. And I was so glad when she stopped at the last moment. I had seen that this wouldn't bring her peace, and now, she finally saw it too. The last flashback with Joel is the last and most poignant twist of TLOU2 story. Ellie didn't want revenge for Joel, she wanted revenge for another chance of redemption that someone took away from her. Joel took her chance of saving the world. And she couldn't forgive him, before Abby took that chance away from her too. In the end she learns to forgive, she tries what is harder than going halfway across the country to kill someone; she learns to forgive Joel. She learns to forgive someone she loved and trusted the most, someone who took agency from her and made her feel powerless. In the end, Ellie doesn't have to forgive Abby, because she never was angry at her. She was projecting her Anger at Joel and at herself that she couldn't forgive him in time, on to her. She learns to let go. "I don't know If I can forgive you for that. But I would like to try". And she tries.

Dude….. I have watched hours upon hours of analysis on this game. I am floored. The observations you made around 39:00 with the whole process of Abby and how she slowly learned that even killing Joel did not bring her peace. And only forgiveness in the end would achieve that. I have never been fond of this game but I am absolutely stoked to play it with a renewed perspective!! I have questioned the pacing and design decisions of this game. Finally thank you for a well thought review.
@Existential_Robot
@Existential_Robot Жыл бұрын
Ghandi did us a disservice with that statement. True justice IS blind. Our fault comes from making things more complex than they really are. If someone kills hundreds, then they deserve to die; if not for the crimes they've committed, then to prevent future crimes. An equal and opposite punishment is usually the simplest, and best form of justice. No *sound* justification allows them to live. If you are of sound mind, then you will realize the insanity of refusing to kill murderers. Now, the thing I will budge on is whether or not your method of dealing with said murderers is inhumane. I wouldn't ask you cut them apart mercilessly, because I am of sound mind. I would simply ask they be put down swiftly and simply. There is no justice or mercy in allowing them to live. Justice must be blind to everything but the crime in question. Otherwise? It's not true justice. Call me brutalist, call me whatever you like... but that's not going to change my stance on the matter.
