As for the American Captain, no one knows what became of him. Some say that he died of his wounds. Others, that he returned to his own country. But I like to think he may have at last found some small measure of peace, that we all seek, and few of us ever find....

I love this movie. But one minor correction about Nathan Algren's character; he isn't a drunk idiot. He's suffering from PTSD, he hates himself and the soldiers he worked with, he hates this imperialist system that the Western Powers are implementing on cultures they deem "inferior". He loved living with and learning about the native american tribe that was then massacred by his cavalry unit. He sees the moment with the Samurai as a shot at redemption for what he has done.

Well it at least has a 7.7 on iMDB. I don't really like RT ratings cause it doesn't say much about a movie, it only says if you like it or not. A movie can be decent at best but have a good score on RT.

Tom Cruise is meant to be a witness to all the events. The major events in the plot could hv happened without his character. The star of the movie is the Japanese culture, and Cuise`s character is the medium for the audience to learn about it.

This is also, why I argue against a "White Savior Story". Algren saves almost nothing. He frees Katsumoto ones, but that's not enough in my opinion. He's a character and has to do at least something, but he is empowered by others and mainly audience.

Tom Cruise doesn't meet the physicality of the role as described in the book BUT actually gets the personality right. People are just so used to his charisma that they assumed that Jack Reacher was trying to be witty when he really just wanted to get stuff done ("collateral" had a similar problem). besides boy being 6.5 feet tall and bulky, he did the role well.

Yes, i have the same problem with the movie, but oh well, i see why it is in there the same way like why TC's character "switches sides". It very much romanticizes the "samurai way". The gatling gun battle works so much better to set a contra point there, and, at least for me, redeemes the previous flaws nearly completely. I really wouldn't call it A+ by any stretch, but the movie is far better than its street reputation !

I completely agree with this critique. This film is also one of my all time greats and I just feel like a script like this cannot be replicated both in its greatness and in its impact. There are a few that sit in the same category of importance to me but I love this film deeply. Just wanted to add that Hiroyuki Sanada's character. I also think that this character added to the concept of internal conflict. On the one hand, he is Samurai and understands that one goes into battle to die. On the other hand, he lost a friend and mostly to someone who he probably did not respect at first. His seemingly own internal conflict in a movie dedicated to the existence and overcoming of conflicts. But, that was just my take on it. I loved all the Japanese actors in this movie. I LOVED this movie.

Yeah, that awkward moment when Cruise wants to look tall for a change, so he accepts a role in a film full of Japanese actors... And then the majority of time he stands next to Ken Watanabe, who's five inches taller than him. You can actually see it in the scene where Algren tells Katsumoto about the battle of Thermopylae - they appear to be the same height, but Algren is standing on a damn hill.
@Power_Cosmic27
@Power_Cosmic27 4 жыл бұрын
The height changes are more so that the director has more freedom to create symmetrical shots and have characters equally in frame. It would be a nightmare if they had to account for height differences in every scene. I doubt it's about TC ego, most likely the opposite. Imagine having to act and talk like a samurai badass while standing on an apple crate in front of 50 crew the whole movie. That's gotta take some guts.

So glad to see you review The Last Samurai, it's one of my all-time favorite films. I don't tend to get emotional during films, though I can easily note how moving a scene must be, but The Last Samurai really gets me from the relationships the characters build with each other.

I've just recently come across your channel, mostly when I was searching for reviews about the next movie I wanna watch. Lately, and specifically browsing through your A+ List (about movies that I've already watched and enjoyed very much), I've come to realize that indeed your taste in movies is very much similar to my own, making your channel a very solid and dependable source of information about movies I didn't know about that I might wanna watch or enjoy at some point. Because of that, I'm subscribing: thanks mate!

It's loosly based on a true story-ish. It blends two real events and uses them to convey a message that isn't quite what was happening at the time. It was a french officer, Jules Brunet, who was sent by France to support the Shogun against the Emperor. At that time the Emperor was cracking down on the cast system, and its decision to forbid the right to bear weapons was the last straw for the Shogun, the samurai in command of the army. When the Shogun was overthrown by the Emperor Meiji, starting the Meiji era, an imperial decree ordered France to withdrew its support to the Shogun, now a rebel against the power instead of the power itself. When France withdrew its support, J. Brunet disobeyed orders and decided to stay with the troops he trained. After the defeat, France took him back and, due to the popularity of his actions in France (and the fact that the Emperor wasn't exactly fond of France to begin with), the japanese request of having him punished was denied.

Thank you for reviewing this. I really enjoyed watching this movie in the cinema, but I've probably only seen it once since then, and that was even quite a while ago. I found it really thought provoking and it resonated on so many levels. It really spoke to me of honour, respect, loyalty, simplicity, discipline, strength and conviction. So many of these values are missing from today's fast-paced, self-centred, hi-tech western culture, which made this film so refreshing. Now I'd really like to sit down and watch it again. So again, thanks Chris.

This movie can be analysed as the character played by Ken Watanabe as being "the last samurai" with his philosophy and way of life and Tom Cruise's character as the outsider's and the audience's POV. But the movie poster could have both men in it in order to convey that.

The battles may LOOK realistic due to choreography, but your suspension of disbelief is destroyed if you know the real history because some of the things that happen make no sense at all.
@tonysintheattic
@tonysintheattic 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, which is why suspension of disbelief is so important. I KNOW it's not real, but to enjoy it, I have to forget that; it's harder to do when you know that the character Katsumoto is based on used guns all the time, and that the conscripts depicted in their 'first' battle in the forest were, by that time, very experience in using guns and should've been fine. The movie is a summary of hundreds of years in history, to make people who don't know the history get a good grasp of it in less than 2 hours. I never said I didn't enjoy it, I'm just responding to one of Chris' comments about it. This movie deserves the A+ imo and I love watching it, hell, I cried at the end!
