A common misconception is that Algren is the last samurai when it's Katsumoto. Samurai wasn't just what you called a warrior, it was a noble class. Just like a peasant doesn't become a knight without a King bestowing that title on him, a person doesn't become a samurai without the Emperor giving him that title.

I don’t think it was specifically Katsumoto but rather his people as a whole and what he stood for. Remember that the word Samurai is both singular and plural. So it doesn’t necessarily refer to just one person.

Indeed. Ken Watanabe was the star of that show, although I LOVED seeing the others as well. :) To be samurai, one had to be Japanese of the proper family status prior to the Meji Restoration. That said? There are many tenets of Bushido that resonate through many different culture and languages. Contrary to many people's beliefs, to serve is not always to be a slave. Sometimes, it is a duty so profound that most simply cannot understand. I think I do, but I have studied Bushido for @ 35 years and even then, I know I am missing a lot. "What could be more necessary?' GOOD movie.

Ninjas and Samurai were not in different periods of time, the samurai just formed earlier :) They sometimes even met in battle. Ninjas were hired when no official party can interfere. They are like paid mercenaries. The Samurai were honor based fighters and leaders. So when theres was a problem the samurai could not deal with, because it would have been dishonorable for them to do, then ninjas were the ones who could. And they have often been hired by the samurai to do their "dirty work" so to speak (sabotage, espionage, assassinations). Even though the samurai despised the ninjas, they would need them from time to time.

Liked and posting same comment as on James' channel...it was fun seeing you guys all "together." 😁 It is wonderful movie based loosely on historical events. Tom Cruise's part is based on the story of a French officer who worked with the Japanese, and the Samurai are based on those of the Satsuma Rebellion. Of course, the Samurai were not as pure and morally motivated as presented, and there are many other differences to real history, but the movie does a terrific job of capturing a romantic vision of traditionalism's stand against modernization. One major difference is that the Satsuma Samurai did not reject firearms, they just did not have many people trained in how to use them, since the government in power had a near monopoly on that kind of knowledge.

The Last Samurai refers to the plural form, though one could argue that it also applies to Katsumoto or even Capt, Algren. I believe that the story is loosely based on a true story, though it was a European military officer that was hired to train the Japanese military.

This comment may be long. I apologize in advance. Love a nod to Boondock Saints. They didn't use repeating/lever action rifles because they were still uncommon. The "Military" arm was the cap and ball musket. Though they did eventually transition to a bolt action rifle. "That guy was head of his class." Sir, remind me to give you the most epic slap upside the head if I ever meet you. Because, whilst that was hilarious, you still deserve it. Yes, that is Hiroyuki Sanada (Ujio). An absolutely AMAZING actor. He's been in a ton of stuff. But, yes, he is indeed Scorpion in the newer Mortal Kombat movie. Remember when Algren first arrives in Japan, Simon Graham (Peter Petigrew) said, I had the unfortunate habit of telling the truth in a country where nobody says what they mean. (Paraphrased). Katsumoto telling Algren that Taka is honored to have his guest in her house, is a reflection of that. Y'all calling Nobutada "Top Knot Kid" makes me angry but also makes me laugh. Y'all absolutely need to watch Dances With Wolves.

The Last Samurai is a motion picture adaption and a blend of two separate but _real_ historical people and events. A Japanese Samurai, Saigo Takamori, who this movie portrays as the character Katsumoto Moritsuga; and a French Soldier, Jules Brunet, who this movie portrays as the character Nathan Algren. Good choice.

Katsumoto was the last samurai. One does not become a samurai without their lord's blessing or commission as one. And yes, the ninja or shinobi did exist during the time of the samurai. They came to wide use during war periods starting in the 1100s through the 1600s and were very prominent during the Sengoku period. They were mostly used as spies though assassination was a skill they were also renowned for.

The last samurai was actually the emperor. Btw the ninja, or shinobi co-existed with the samurai for centuries. They didn’t use Chinese throwing stars but did use Japanese weapons like shuriken.

James nailed it with the meaning of the title. Tom was not the last samurai. He was not dressed as a samurai at the end when he visited the emperor. It was mentioned that there were other samurai and they were afraid they would join the rebellion and that's why they had to stop it now. Also the word "samurai" doesn't mean warrior. I think the movie specifically mentions that it means "to serve".

Inazō Nitobe's "Bushido; The Soul of Japan" was published 125 years ago. So free to download. It was an attempt by a Japanese man to explain Bushido to westerners. A very early primary source by someone fluent in both ways. You'll find the importance of the belly for warriors, for that is where the soul resides. Draw your own conclusions now on why the Red Samurai killed the impaled Sergeant who stood his ground and was dying already with a stab to the gut. The Soul had not yet been freed, and it was as respectful as cutting off the head in aiding another honorable warrior's passing. (In my opinion)

The problem with fire bombing was people were able to escape and with supplies, especially men. Men were constantly being drafted into the military. They essentially had a never ending supply of kamikaze's and cannon fodder. Japan is pretty far away from America and getting supplies all the way over there for a strong ground invasion was a ways off. The nukes, got them to surrender rather immediately since losing the 90% of the population and all cities seemed absolutely imminent. Also fire bombing was risky, expensive due to lost aircraft, and inaccurate which is why the "bat bomb" was made but never got used because the nuke happened first. Well, technically it got used once on ourselves by accident and it worked super well.

And when it comes to Taka (the mom) after, she probably enjoyed that a whole lot, but also respected it... Its complicated

Algren has no fear because he wishes/wished to die. He couldnt stand his own self, and how ashamed was of him self. He followed orders. He wished the soldier in the beginning would shoot him to just end his missery, he wished for the sword of the dude grazing him with the blade when he arrived in the village (which probably just gained him a bit of "street" cred in the end) etc etc...

Those conscripts were nowhere near ready enough to have loaded weapons on the train. Plus, with their weapons, the Emperor got what he paid for. Gotta keep the powder dry. Good eye noting that the imported weapons weren't quite the top of the line stuff being sold in the States. (Even if it had been, I say again that they weren't ready to have loaded weapons in transit. Even modern armies have rules about when and where to load.)

The reason that theu sit like that kneeling down is from the Edo period. When you sit like that it makes ypur legs go numb and even if you are wearing a sword you wont be able to fight. Samurai, who were essentially nobles learned to sit like this to shpw that they were not a threat to whomever they were sitting with. It is analogous to taking your helmet off entering someone's home or business, which later become taking your hat off etc.
