These new food plots will be attracting deer soon - just in time for deer season! Grant shares tips on how to plant these small food plots easier and faster!
In this video one of the things you'll see is the preparation of the seed bed, the rate of fertilization and liming of the food plots, and finally the broadcasting of several hidey hole food plots yesterday the rain. They broadcasted Green Cover Seed blends. This higher rate ensures a good stand!

Great video! Still finishing up my little plots. Hopefully this week I'll have them done. Lots of hunting time left here in SC! Thanks for mentioning the Savior's resurrection! To often we focus on the death on the cross, which is important, but most important to me is the Resurrection. The new life that each of us can hope for through Jesus Christ. Looking forward to seeing some great hunts from you all!

Your videos are very inspirational. I like the food plot advice,but I love how you relate it to how Jesus wants us to grow like the plants we grow to feed the deer.

Just planted my green cover fall blend yesterday and hung tree stands here in upstate SC. Thanks for all your info and education Grant and team! What brand spreader do you recommend for broadcasting seed?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
Kyle - Congratulations and thanks for the kind words! I use and Earthway broadcast spreader - and over the shoulder model. There are many brands but I stay away from the cheap ones as they seem to not last very long.

Wouldn't you want to press the seed in with a culitpacker? it just lays on bare ground and comes up?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV 5 ай бұрын
I don't own or use a cultipacker. I do broadcast just before a rain.

Why do you fertilize and plant at the same time rather than doing one before the other? Just trying to learn more for when I make a food plot next year
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
Ethan - Fertilizer, or portions of it, are volatile and it's spread to early it won't be available for plants to use.

Awesome about the resurrection, 100%! Question: I just broadcasted after spraying 4 small plots and for the most part got great germination but in one plot about half appears to have zero germination whatsoever. Half looks good and half did nothing. I planted small seeds only because the soil is hard pan. Any advice for what to do with the bare spot? Thanks

Wheat or cereal rye is great to fill in areas like this and stays green all winter. Planting time will vary depending on location. You don’t want it getting very tall before cold hits. Kill it in the spring.

Thanks for the encouraging words! If the first frost is likely another 4 weeks or more out where you are, then any good blends of small-sized seed can be planted. It's best to broadcast just before a rain if your schedule allows.

Grant, would there be any benefit of soaking your seeds in water overnight to increase germination?
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
Charley - Whew - seeds that have been soaked would be tough to spread.

How would you recommend doing a burn in hardwoods?
@usernamehere6061
@usernamehere6061 Жыл бұрын
Feb-march. Prep a fire break with a chainsaw and leafblowers or an existing road system. Always start at the top of ridges and burn down the slope. Fire races up chutes and hills and can be dangerous. Lookout for cat faces on trees and snags that can catch fire near your break. If you have prize oak trees you don't want the fire near you can rake around those to minimize exposure to the heat. GL burning!

Kayla - There are lots of variables. There are several videos about burning in hardwoods on our channel. If you are talking about burning the duff from a small food plot, simply blow all the leaves away from the edge of the plot to create a break - an area with no fuel that's at least 5' wide.

Do y’all just burn at will or do you call the fire department still. I’m sure they know y’all by name.
@GrowingDeerTV
@GrowingDeerTV Жыл бұрын
Jay - In Missouri, it's not manditory to inform the GOV that a prescribed fire is about to occur. We call the local fire department as a courtesy and so they can calm neighbors that might call.
