The lynching of Emmett Till was a case that helped spark the Civil Rights Movement. The Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr., the last surviving eyewitness to the tragedy, details his memories in a new book, "A Few Days Full of Trouble: Revelations on the Journey to Justice for My Cousin and Best Friend, Emmett Till." Now a pastor, district superintendent and public speaker, the Rev. Parker speaks with Michel Martin.

This is a story of pure evil. As a child, I lived in the South, and was aware that lynchings were going on. The hatred was so intense and so deep, you had to live there and experience it to understand it. Emmet was just an innocent boy who was savagely tortured and murdered by a group of grown men. There are no words to express the horror of what was done to him.

Sadly, there were so many more Emmit Tills that didn’t make the news, because they knew the same would happen to them. Even the little girls they blew up at church, nothing was done about them. The “Soil of the South” has so many dead bodies that were buried at night, because they could accuse Blacks of any offense, and it resulted in a severe beating or death. Countless murders that nobody answered for, because Blacks knew to keep quiet!😢🙏🏽

@@audreymcdougle4193 I think hindsight is 20/20. There was a large enough family to watch Emmett and protect him. It wasn't Emmett's fault that he did something that is definitely prohibited in the South. We make errors with other people, but it's usually forgiven or was misunderstood. This was a different time and there is not an atom of me that will ever know the feelings of the families and Emmett. Our world today is very different. Horrifying racism and prejudice happens every day now. A lot of people were brainwashed to believe black people were less than, non-human, a disease to avoid, a disposable life. Safety concerns were active in the North as well as the South. Have you ever gone to a new, scary, or dangerous place, but had someone with you who was local and understood the surroundings. You'd feel much safer. His mom probably thought that he would safe in the arms of his extended family. That wasn't the problem. It was a simple cultural mistake. When we visit other places, foreign or domestic, we never really know the customs or repercussions of our actions. Emmett did something harmless, but in the wrong place at the wrong time. He never even knew. Carolyn's lies were not unusual of the times. It didn't make it right.

@spider man You are making excuses for something that can't be excused! We do NOT have to become a product of our society, that's a real copout! People rise above their circumstances all of the time!! What about the kid who grew up in a household where both parents abused drugs? He decides that he doesn't want to be like them, so he stays away from drugs, works hard in school and goes on to become a Harvard graduate!! His "society" was drug abuse, but he didn't make the excuse, my parents do drugs so I will too! He rose above that!! So I say for the LAST TIME, racism is a CHOICE!

The word EVIL doesn't come close to describe what happen to this beautiful young man. Its so disheartening to know that racism really hasn't changed enough in this world. People are still having to deal with injustice, what is it going to take to remind our world that we are all cut from the same cloth? ( Human) We need to make sure to educate ourselves as well as our children that this is unacceptable. The energy that it takes to HATE seems so exhausting, all that energy is so much more rewarding to smile or hold a door open for someone. Take a good look in the mirror and ask yourself What can I benefit from hate? What can I do to be that change?

I asked my grandmother what made her fall in love with her 1st husband. She claims she didn’t love him (after having 6 boys together 🙄), but she NEEDED to get out of Mississippi and he had just joined the army. My great aunt said grandma stopped smiling, when she was younger and still living in Mississippi. I always wondered about that…. My grandmother was a very pretty light skinned woman and we were always told that we had native ancestry. However, when my mom did a DNA test, it said she is 24% white… I don’t even know what that would mean for my grandmother. But my mom is kinda of light, and she did not get that from her father. Who was much darker. I want to know. And do not all at the same time. But later I found out, that everyone knows what the unspoken rules are in the south… My family has had land stolen, we have been rapped, tortured, maimed and killed. We are all so very very tired of this shit. I wish I was given the $5 million offer, that they had in California. I would take that money and get the fuck out of this shit-hole country, so goddamn fast! You would see dust, like roadrunner.🏃🏾‍♀️💨

The woman, Carolyn Bryant, is still alive. A few years ago she admitted that she lied about Emmet being aggressive towards her inside of the store. As this man is saying, he whistled. In the meantime, the two men who took him were originally only planning to "rough him up" not kill him because they knew he was a northern boy and they respected his grandfather. However, when they got him to the scene, they noticed that the boy was "arrogant", wouldn't back down, didn't act what they referred to as "n*gger scared" (i.e. crying , begging, pleading, etc...)" and he wouldn't admit to doing anything wrong. He also wouldn't say "yes sir" to them and when they asked him if he thought he was equal to white folks, he said "yes". They tried to beat and torture that out of him and still he kept saying "yes" to the question. It infuriated them. Eventually, they put a gun to his head and he still wouldn't comply. They shot him in the back of the head and then had the three Black men who witnessed the entire ordeal discard the body. Carolyn Bryant was originally in the truck when they picked Emmett up. She verified his identity and the rest is history. She had no compassion for the child nor for his mother. Vile.

And what was even worse, as mr. parker recounts here, is that when they were able to profit from their crime, they confessed but still continued to lie about Emmett's character. I can't imagine how it must have hurt the family to hear the way he was so falsely and wrongly portrayed in order to justify what they did. I'm sure there are people who still believe that Emmett was cocky about all the white women he'd had. This is blaming the victim ("it's your fault that I beat you") of the worst kind and a gaslighting that persists to this day.

I am so sorry this gentleman and his loved ones had to endure this much pain !💔 My dear brother was a victim of a similar style of being murdered in 1995, and I feel the "pain" of it constantly! I was born in 1956, so I am grateful for your story being written because it's not a secret that we still see this today! I personally am hopeful that the children of today will make things better. They deserve to live in a world filled with "hope and ❤️ love!" Thank you so much to all involved in bringing us this historic lesson! This was much-needed for historical purposes. I became obsessed with this story and begin doing research in 1990. I spoke by phone with one of the Black citizens in Greenville familiar with the story. He was more than accommodating and urged me to "come down" there. It became obvious I might meet some resistance from the mother as she had seemingly shut out most inquiries. I began to realize this was not going to be a cakewalk, aside from having no experience writing such script along with possible monetary considerations I'd have to bear. It seems it took Whoopi Goldberg 15 years to produce the film ans with that in mind, I serious doubt I would have been able to find funding. But then, one never knows. I decided against proceeding, but the story remined with me. Emmett was 6 years older than me and unlike him, I was born and raised in the south. Sadly, that could have happened to any young black kid., even if his actions were misunderstood by the whites. My parents died in the south in 2005 and were buried in a segregated cemetery.

Imagine the fear instilled in poor Emmett that day, but even worse, the fear in him on the day of his death at the hands of those thugs. They never saw Emmett as the innocent child that he was. In fact, they did not even see him as a human. His corpse was full evidence of that. I thank God that Mamie Till had the courage to show the world the evidence of this horrific event. Neither her nor Emmett ever got justice in their lifetimes, but I pray that his suffering was not in vain and that it has prevented even one death since. Nothing much has changed, but we continue to trust in God and to him be the glory. Thank you, Reverend Wheeler, for giving us a true recollection of the story. This case is a part of history now. All we can do is learn from it. Like slavery we leave it to the dark past. We still hurt from it though. The surprising truth is that this is viewed as a story for Black people! It’s not viewed as historical; it’s like a touch tone. As most Whites in North and South, USA; they haven’t heard the story! Those of us who were alive during the Civil Rights Era; know the story well. It’s a story that we really hate to tell, hate to remember! After the death of the cousin; I think we won’t likely hear of it again! It stirs up emotions; and bring up the dark past that many want to forget!

Carolyn Bryant has been investigated 14 times from August 28, 1955 to August 10, 2022, by 2 county Sheriff's Department, grand juries, the state of Mississippi, the Justice Department, and the FBI. And the results were the same all 14 times: Carolyn Bryant had nothing to do with the kidnapping or murder of Emmett Till. ___________________________________ 12 grown men kidnapped, mercilessly tortured, and murdered an innocent 14 year old Emmett Till However, there is such a fetish to crucify Carolyn Bryant, folks have *forgiven and forgotten* the very men who had to wash the *real* innocent blood Emmett Till off their hands on the Lords day, August 28, 1955.

We were at this country store and the white owner called her N___a when she picked up some candy to buy. She jumped on him scratched him up and I pulled her off him . We ran out the store as he was going to get his gun. Told my dad to which he helped diffuse the situation. But we had to put her on the train back to Chicago that night! She was was 13 I was 11. Yall hear that people? When it was cotton pickin time, you had to puck cotton, and if you weren't in the fields pucking cotton you wound up in jail. In the 1940's in Mississippi. Thats my Grandparents youth. Two generations from me. And my Grandparents said they used to pick cotton but never did they go into detail, they said it was hard, but they never went into detail because they didn't want us to have anger in our hearts towards certain people. But as granny always said, the truth comes out in the wash. That was institutionalized slavery. This is crazy!

Emmet's family were sharecroppers. Life for a sharecropper was only a step above slavery! My family is from Clarksdale, Mississippi, about a 30-40 minute drive from where Emmett was kidnapped and murdered. My family farmed cotton, but my grandfather owned his 60 acres of land. My mom and aunts and uncles picked cotton, but not like slaves on a plantation like sharecroppers. Owning your own land made a big difference if you were black in Mississippi. Emmet's uncle was more submissive because he was a sharecropper and didn't have much to say. Bryant and Milam would have gotten some rounds pumped in their asses if they had come up on my grandfather's property!! Even back then, a black man had a leg up if he had his own land!!
