I found your other laundry video shortly after we lost our eight year old son tragically two years ago. I am still doing this system today. It has been a blessing to me to have one more thing in my life simplified. We only have what we need, I do one load of laundry every day, I don't have piles of laundry. I just have simple wicker shelves in the laundry room nothing fancy I toss each persons laundry on a shelf they grab it up and take care of it. I appreciate this system more than you will ever know. Going through something like we did put me in a mental fog for months having this system is a blessing. THANK YOU for touching my life when I really needed it most!

Laundry is my favourite chore. Living in a warm climate my routine is quite different as we do not use the dryer but hang outside on the clothesline. I agree we only have the dirty clothes in the laundry. Routine: I wash first thing in the morning and as I hang the items on the line I have different spots on the line for different family members, which is my first sort. At the end of the day when I remove from the line I then put each person’s like items together (all hubby’s t-shirts come off at the same time). I also fold as I remove from the line. The basket is then full of sorted folded clothing or linen and I walk through the house putting the items away and return the basket to the laundry. I have always found the whole process to be very mindful (before mindfulness was a thing) and the joy of going out in the sunshine, hearing the birds etc. Favourite chore.

Solution for socks: My mother-in-law told me she bought all plain black crew socks for her boys (and picked one single brand) and I adopted this. It was a game changer! Absolutely no sorting because the socks are all identical and they are tossed in a bin 👏👏I used to have a hard time with all of the patterned dress socks my husband wore to work. The patterns were subtle, it was hard to tell navy from black etc., which made sorting a nightmare! This was my biggest laundry whoa LOL There are some white socks, too. But same idea...all one brand, same style, bin method!

I did the same with my kids. I don’t know exactly when I started them on their own laundry, it’s been so long ago. I’m thinking about 7-8 yrs old. My step daughter came into my life when she was 5 or 6 & she needed some learning & trust time. I do remember though not long after being in the school system, if they can learn & do in school, they can learn & do in the home. They were doing their own laundry early & their bedroom could be trashed all week but come the weekend it was spotless & they did all of that at early ages. Their bathroom soon followed with the silver even left shining. They only needed a few lessons & they were off to the races. Of course it didn’t hurt that the younger wanted to be as old or at least think he was, the older was. One happy mama. 👌

Do they also help out with the family laundry? My husband’s mom had the kids do their own laundry, but never made them help with the family laundry. Fast forward many years and I move in with him, his sister, & a couple friends ... no one ever washed the household laundry - the kitchen towels were so gross & the bath mats were even worse! Everyone’s personal laundry was great, but not so much for those shared objects. I figured out really fast that it’s because none of them ever helped with the shared laundry growing up.

I am an empty nester. I have two hampers in my closet...One for dark and one for light clothes. They are on wheels so when one gets full I wheel it to the laundry room and do that load. We've been using this system for years and never lose socks and don't have a huge pile up of laundry. I also have a laundry bag that hangs in my closet for delicate items. It has been a lifesaver. We also do not have many undergarments, so we have to do laundry at least once a week. When the kids were still at home, they started doing their own laundry in middle school and were completely responsible for doing it by high school in preparation for college and beyond. If a soccer uniform didn't get washed, they had to wear it dirty. It taught them how to plan ahead. I did help out from time to time because sometimes life gets crazy and a little help from mom is not so bad occasionally. Thanks Dawn for the encouragement to keep the inventory down. That really does make a difference.

My husband does not like the no-fold idea. He is a perfectionist at heart, and can't stand the thought of unfolded things sitting in the drawers. So, staying on top of the laundry day-by-day is the answer for us. Otherwise we are folding for hours and I'm not doing that anymore! (: Thanks for the awesome tips! Just finished minimizing the kids' clothes and organizing their "future" boxes. It feels good to make the box the bad guy because we are not letting the clothing grow beyond that boundary. I rarely comment on videos - but I've been following you for a few years now. Just wanted to say a huge "thank you!" for your advice with laundry. It was a sore spot in my home management. My husband is gracious and got used to the two of us having a "folding party" as he called it - where we'd fold multiple loads of laundry after the kids went to bed. I didn't have a problem washing or drying - just getting it all folded. Then you come, my internet best friend, and say, "don't fold it." Ding, ding, ding! Light bulb moment. One of my frustrations with folding is that the clothes never stay folded in the kids' drawers. So now I don't fold it. I make sure everything is right side out and make a pile for each kid. They come get their pile and put them away. If they choose to fold, they can. I fold mine and my husband's and put them away - straight from the dryer. Thank you, thank you, thank you! It's such a "small thing" but removed a huge daily stress point from my life.

I was thinking "You don't have a laundry basket??? Whaaat?" 😲😲 I have 3! Then I remembered you just put your washing straight in the dryer after washing. In Australia, especially in warm areas many people don't even own dryers. If you do have one you use it as necessary maybe a few times a year. People who live in apartments will use them if they dont have the hanging space and those in really cold climates but most just hang it out on the line and let the air and sun do their thing! It certainly makes it a longer process but it is what we are all used to doing here. The main thing is to just fold or hang (who has time to iron😂) and put it away straight away once you get it off the line and put the basket away before it gathers stuff. We are a family of 5 and I definitely feel like all I do is laundry but doing a load every day helps. At least our machine is automatic, my mum had a manual machine when I was young and her mum used a hand washing board!

Good arm workout too on a windy day 😂 Where we live temps reach 40 Celsius quite often in summer, sometimes we turn our clothes inside out so they won't fade and i even hang clothes on a rack inside when its brutally hot 😂 But here we barely get under freezing and it barely rains (we are in drought and it hasn't rained at all in 2 months) so we don't have many excuses not to use our clothes lines! Plus our electricity is amongst the most expensive in the world so this and having solar panels certianly helps our power bills!

I am a senior with a bad hip, living on the second floor, so I must carry the laundry from home to car to laundromat and back again. I have pared my wardrobe down so that two weeks works perfectly for me. This allows me to have two or three full loads without it being too heavy to carry up and down the stairs.

Hi! I live in France and have 2 toddlers (2yo and 1yo). I do 1 load a day. I sort bedsheets/towels, colors, white. We usually don't use the dryer unless it's for towels or when it's too cold outside. I hang clothes to dry, out when it's sunny or in the laundry room when it gets cooler. I do not fold kids clothes. As soon as it's dry I'll hang them. 1 top/sweater on the hanger and a matching pair of shorts/ trousers on the same hanger. Each sunday I have a look at the weather forecast and set their 5 outfits for the week, no thinking on the morning. They have approximately 5 outfits for warm weather and 7 for cold weather.

I am single but still had laundry issues. After working on decluttering, I changed how I do laundry. I used to do laundry on Sunday afternoon or evening whenever I ran out of things to wear. Most of the clean laundry would just get piled on my dresser because I was too tired to deal with it. Things would “go missing” or if I could find what I was looking for it was a wrinkled mess. I now do laundry every week on Saturday mornings. Doing laundry every week makes less laundry, and doing it Saturday morning ensures I have the energy to put the little bit of laundry I do have away. It has been awesome!

I am so grateful.I watched this Video!!! This video has helped me change my home!!! I did not adopt your system, but implemented parts of it and thought about where the breakdown was happening in my home, and it only took me about a day to come up with a new system that works for ME! That was about 4 months ago, and my laundry has gotten out of control only once, since then! And even then, having a functional system in place made it relatively quick and easy to recover. I used to only get my laundry "under control" about once a month maybe. I have also gotten behind another couple of times, but behind no longer equals out of control, because in my new system , everything is still in it's place when I am behind, and not all over my house. It helps too, that I had already been decluttering clothes since I had discovered your videos last winter. But even with clothes decluttered, my old laundry habits were not working for me. Before, I used to constantly be upset at myself thinking I wasn't enough to keep up with my laundry no matter how hard I worked. I suppose I used to work for (and fail) my old laundry "system", but now my new system works for me!!!

This video has solidified two points that I have been contemplating regarding laundry. A) cut down on the number of items that can be used each week (especially flannels/wash cloths/face washers) B) not having a set laundry day for the week. Minimizing the number of items will assist me in not over loading the washing machine so clothes etc. might be better washed. I am going to place the extra items i.e. flannels, kitchen t-towels etc. in a storage container in the landing so they are available if I need to replace an item but they are not straining our limited storage space or adding to the weekly laundry.

I tend to restart the dryer too many times because I’ve let them sit. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I totally agree that if you have less then laundry is easier 👍🏻.

Totally with you on a load a day, wash almost everything together, and fold as little as possible! I don’t have space for a hammer or basket in the laundry room, though (weird laundry room basically a hallway set-up), so I have a hamper in each room. My hack, though, is that I only wash clothes from one hamper/room per day. Kids each have one day a week, three days spread throughout the week for me and my husband. That way, I only have to put clothes away in one room when I’m done, which I am much more likely to do! Love your channel! Your videos have definitely given me a sense of social connection these past months. Thank you!!!!

My 2 kids (12, 10) have their own hampers. I have mine. They already know how to separate lights, medium, darks, but I still do it for now. 3 loads for their stuff together and then my 3 loads. It isn't a big deal. It's my favourite chore. Just thankful each time that I don't have to scrub by hand like my great granma

"You don't rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems", James Clear. I work a similar laundry system with less to wash, and it works, I have no more big piles of laundry 👏👏 Before simplifying, there was no chance of me keeping up with laundry, i think it multiplied on it's own.

I have a nice laundry room. 4 hampers, one for towels, one for my husband’s darks, one for his whites, and the last for my clothes. It is super easy because a counter is right beside the dryer door, which is lifted from a pedestal, and I fold as I remove from dryer.

I also have 4 children and we are home schoolers. People always thought it was weird that I don't have any hampers in the house. There have always been just 2 tall ones in the laundry room. One for my husband & my clothes. The other is for the kids' clothes. Everyone brings their clothes to the laundry room as soon as they change. My 2 year old understands this system. We also do a load a day. It works great!

Thanks to Dawn I've been doing one load of laundry a day for over a year, it has allowed me to minimize my clothing and my kids clothing and made laundry so simple. I wash one load a day and then fold the load from the previous, this works really well for me, I don't have to go back and finish the laundry later it all happens at one time. My toddlers are able to put their own laundry away because we keep their clothes in baskets in the linen closet and we don't bother with folding it. Wash clothes and dish towels don't get folded either because my toddlers put those away too. The only thing I wash separately are my husband bright red uniform shirts because they were bleeding on the rest of the laundry.

It’s doable for the rest of us too Melissa, it’s just about building a routine. I tend to put a load in the washing machine as soon as I get home from work and it’s finished washing just after dinner. I then fold and put away the previous day’s load, which is generally dry by then. Last I hang the load I’ve just washed. I don’t own a dryer, but this would still work if you did. I wash a load of towels and a load of sheets on the weekend, so the after work loads are for school clothes, work clothes, sports clothes, etc.

@@kyliemoloney3218 oh I’ve got routines! I’m good!! I’m just saying in general. When I look back over the last several years when I would go straight from work to one or more kids activities and get home to then do dinner, it wasn’t feasible to do laundry daily unless I wanted it to sit in the washing machine overnight. Plus I am a fold directly from the dryer and put away type of person, so laundry sitting around is more stressful to me than anything. I had 4 kids in 27 months that are now teenagers who do their own laundry. And have always worked full time. So trust me, I have always had routines!!! I am speaking from the experience of being, for example, on maternity leave and being home all day everyday. Much easier to get laundry done daily from start to finish when you are steps from the laundry room all day!!

I have a dedicated day for laundry. For energy efficiency, I can't justify running the washer and dryer for a few clothes once a day.

Agreed. I grew up with my mom doing it twice a week, and she had 7 kids. We all knew that laundry days were Monday and Thursday. We all tried to help with it if we weren’t in school. She said the same thing about energy. That it’s much more energy efficient to run several loads in the dryer on one day while it was already heated up. Rather than heat it up every day for just one load. I do laundry just on Monday’s and it works out great! There are just two of us here now.

I implemented a rule at our house where clothes that aren’t in the laundry room hamper don’t get washed. I got so tired of carrying a heavy laundry basket from room to room gathering up clothes.

I never gathered clothes. My kids learned early on that if they wanted clean clothes, they had to put their dirty ones in the hamper in the laundry room. Same for my husband.
