This video shows a deep-sea squid Gonatus onyx fighting to eat an owlfish Pseudobathylagus milleri. It was recorded using remotely operated vehicle Doc Ricketts.
The title of this video refers to the law of tooth and claw, a literary theme depicting the violence in nature. Jack London's "The Call of the Wild" is a classic example of this theme.
Video producer: Susan von Thun
Script and narration: Bruce Robison
Production support: Nancy Jacobsen Stout

True lol, but even if we don't notice it, we're more metal by default. Permanently surviving outside of water is an incredible feat that few species could manage way back in time. Having to form thick, strong membranes outside our body to minimize loss of fluid. We live in some environments way more harsh than the ocean.

Wow, it looks like a miniaturized version of giant squid vs sperm whale. Except in this case the predator/prey relationship is reversed between cephalopod and vertebrate. These squid are only about a foot long, but it really looks like an almost perfectly scaled-down version of a colossal.

In the deep sea food is scarce so to survive animals need adaptations such as low metabolism and thoroughly gorging on the rare meals they do catch. In foreign environments like the deep sea our common sense tends to break down, plus I should point out they study these environments ;)

Some people criticize humans for their "factory farms" or whatever, but at least we don't eat these creatures alive and slowly like so often can happen. Nature is far more brutal than humans usually. @dliiiiiiii

This was super cool! Thanks, MBARI. My labmate and I were wondering a few things. How does the squid know where the spinal cord is? It seems like a lot of work to orient itself correctly. Plus, it's probably pretty dark. Does the squid just use its beak to start biting in hopes of reaching the spinal cord, or is it more directed?
@MBARIvideo
@MBARIvideo 10 жыл бұрын
As we watched this interaction, we saw that the squid was rotating the fish with its arms, so it must know which end is the head by feeling the fish with its arms. Deep-sea squid are very good at striking fish and holding on so that they can manipulate and orient the fish. The squid was biting a groove around the fish's head. It probably keeps biting until the fish is dead.

Imagine having no arms, and some hellspawn creature with eight flexible arms lined with suckers slams into your neck, wraps them around it, then with its beak pressed hard up against your neck it starts chewing into your spinal cord, where it then proceeds to eat you alive little beak bite by little beak bite.
