What does happiness mean to you? 90% of it comes from things other than our circumstances. We don’t have a lot of control over the circumstances in our lives, but we do have control over our practices and how we engage with our circumstances. Many people seek to understand what things help produce a successful life, and the number one factor that is often found in the quality of people's close relationships. In this highlight, Dr. Cloud shows us how the psychological best practices to live a happy life correlate almost exactly to the advice the Bible gives us and how to enact these principles in our daily lives.
Get a free 14 day trial to Boundaries.me with over 90 video courses, daily coaching emails and more. We've got courses on codependency, finding safe people, dealing with a narcissist, and over 90 other courses. You'll also get daily coaching videos delivered to your inbox--short 2-4 minute videos that give you one thing to do that day to build your way to a better version of yourself. We've also got a members-only support community on the site where you can discuss what you're learning, and get support and share support along the way. It's a free two-week trial, and only $9/month after that. You can cancel at anytime. Got to www.boundaries.me and click Start Free Trial.

That it’s practices, not circumstances, and relationship development and support make sense. “Can’t do that in a vacuum”. 💕

Indeed. We become what we do. We are what we do. Guess exercise is exactly it. Even if it's taking walks and climbing stairs 😅

Relationships sure can have an affect on you. I had a friend we talked everyday for 10 years. I helped her get a job, babysat her kids, etc. One day she just said I needed to find another friend. Later, I found out she had taken the job I just left and was telling them my secrets! She later told me she wanted to be me. I started to get panic attacks and my health got bad. Be careful who you let in your circle. I would have paid more attention for the signs early on.

One of my fave books is “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor, Harvard Researcher. I hope I spelled that right. It is awesome! 😎 🤩 👏 He posits that as researches found, most folks put off happiness “until…” - until they get the raise - until they move out of state - get the degree… - get the raise - get the relationship they want… “Then”, they’ll be happy…. But what they found was that folks were already happy 😃 were much much more likely to be successful in achieving their goals! It actually works the other way around. In general, I’ve noticed that happy people leave a wake of positive feelings behind them. Like a renter who washes and replaces all the sheets and towels, does the dishes, cleans up, and leaves some fresh flowers for the owner in the VRBO. They leave the world better than they found it. Unhappy or bitter people tend to leave a wake of frustration, mistrust, anger, upset, or like lawsuits wherever they go. If you can change the wake you leave, your impression on the world that you make, I think you’ll be almost certain most of the time to reap the benefits of the fruits of the Spirit. Of course bad things will still happen but it might not affect you as badly ir for as long or as negatively. You can shake it off quicker and keep moving. If you get stuck in it, it’s like quicksand and will bring you down with a few folks you reach out to to help pull you up. Don’t let yourself more too long in the dumps. The quicker you get right back up on that horse, the faster you regain your sense of self balance and control.

If I had to choose between happiness and peace, I much rather have peace. Happiness is fleeting. It leaves when pain enters. While peace given by God, is a continual companion that meets inevitable grief and does not waiver.

“Co-dependency” is nothing but serving non-Christians, outside the kingdom. And-nurses are, as a group, the happiest, healthiest and most mentally stable people I know. (I am from the Great lakes area.) iI have always wondered if this might be related to their lifetime of serving others.

Research reveals human life's most meaningful success is determined by the QUALITY of folks close relationships ... QUALITY is subjective to the QUALITY of life practices

Your comment got me thinking. Not being able to control the quality of people in our life (until they grow up/mature in the near future, fingers crossed) is sad but at least we know where to access Quality. Here in the form of a good mature counselor who has been giving Quality conversations thru the years! And the source of Quality who moves the heart of man, helping many to maintain their practices, their set points, in the midst of particular challenges. Amen to Quality!

There is wisdom in what you shared .. Over the years I witnessed not in the sense of growth , but in the sense of maturity comes from selecting well thought out researched options that are known to have great results when selected ... Good In sight can come from the least expected sources .. it's always best to investigate deeper than what the surface reveals .. Some times it's the simple things brings us the best kind of good stuff in life @@sarahyip2825

Good morning doctor Cloud. What about when our life has been a continuation of extreme circumstances and the set point has no correlation or understanding of "steady"? Is there ever hope to have a reset? I appreciate your heart to help people heal. It's been a while since I read through your Boundaries book with Townsend. I think it's a good day to pick it up again. May you continue to find new and innovative ways to help people heal. My faith is under extreme doubt but I count it as future faith, as my incoming reward and I accept more understanding and healing as I go through this "dark night".

Self determination or having a choice creates a sense or feeling of happiness. I wonder is there a corresponding neurotransmitters? Could it be oxytocin and would this be an example of self love? Thanks again for your work in helping people heal! I just finished Bessel Van Der Kulk's book. The Body Keeps the Score. I am curious to hear your thoughts on the book. Blessings to everyone who reads this. You matter!

Do codependence give to be seen? Or for the seemingly accolades associated or the praise with attention that can be used like a monument or plaque on the wall to remind people that they need to give to them because they are currently living behind. Or to appear helpful to the homeless or hurting when or while bragging about it whenever the spotlight turns to them? 20:23
