Nice review. While I have have the use of two hands, I'm often in a situation where one-handed function is helpful. Up on a ladder and unexpectedly need pliers, for example. Wave looks better for most functions, but one-handeness is a nice feature. Kudos to Leatherman. Have to give Nick credit for "one handy." That was not an obvious pun.

I work as a lighting technician off-broadway and I love this tool! Had it since Christmas and it's really held up to the work load. The story I heard about why Leatherman made this tool was because the patent that Gerber held for the slide mechanism on this tool had expired, so Leatherman acquired it and wanted to make a better tool than the Gerber MP-600. I'm not sure of the timeline, but I'm pretty sure Gerber's response to the OHT was the Centerdrive (which I'm also jealously eyeing as another tool to add to the repertoire).

Quick hack I figured out for side mounting molle pouches to a belt that I've figured out not long ago. Since the molle configuration uses horizontally and vertically opposed webbing, to stabilize it when threaded to corresponding molle gear, what I ended up doing, was buying a pack of duty styled belt keepers like you see on the belts of police or security personnel, threaded them though the molle, snap em closed, and bam, just thread your belt through that. Whatever size belt. I'd been trying to figure out an effective way to carry my phone, and I realized my Samsung galaxy s8 fits neatly into a Condor single mag carrier (5.56) and the mag carrier itself is molle mounted, so I did the belt keeper thing, and now my phone lives sideways mounted on my belt. Hope that's useful to someone.

I use mine for commercial custom fabrication and it's perfect. I've previously owned the Wave and the Gerber Centerdrive. Having to pry open the Wave's pliers constantly was a real nuisance. The Centerdrive pliers rattle and many of the tools can't be accessed from the outside. I think that's what I love so much about the OHT - attention to the small things that make it perform much more efficiently in a long-term, daily-use setting.

The leartherman sidekick that I've had for a couple years now has vanished, I believe it to have gone missing at work. I think, combined with the molle hack I commented below, this will fit the bill nicely. It's a cool price point too. Great tool . I suspect the target group is craftsmen or people that work around ladders alot. With that in mind I really dont see why they added a can opener. A short file for deburring, a chisel or an awl would have been better choices for people in that line of work I think.

It's a great tactical multi tool. The OHT crowd are police and fire/ems. It's black and blends well with the dark blue or black uniforms. A dull matte finish is subdued to reduce light reflection for stealth. The "clickiness" actually has a value. If you need to one hand a tool you probably are doing it "sight unseen" which makes the clickiness an audible confirming feature. As a close in weapon, the click is universal language for "say hello to my little friend!!!" right before you jam it in the recipients ear, temple, or eye. To quote the guy from Robocop "I.. LIKE IT !!!"
@NewZonaRides
@NewZonaRides 6 жыл бұрын
The whole time I am watching this I was thinking this is the tool Gerber should have made. It screams Gerber to me. The omission of a file is what hangs this tool up for me. I might still buy one down the road though to try out.

Given the weight and size of an OHT, all blades on it are too short, if you compare them to those on a Wave or a Rebar. As far as I know, OHT is the only tool in Leatherman's product line that is equipped with a bypass wire cutter loaded with a sprig. To make sure the spring works, the wire cutter is assembled loosely. Wiire is often caught between wire cutter blades when you use a OHT to cut stranded wire.

It's a little stiff and hard to press the button to unlock and fold the tools back into the handle, even with two hands. Maybe it's just me--maybe my hands aren't tough enough. But I still love this tool. I got it as a preparedness tool.

Hi, I have several Leatherman I'm a fan obviously, Surge, rebar, Crush, TX31 knife, skeleton and more etc. but guess what I simply love the OHT: the fact that you dont need 2 hands to open it. The spring-loaded pliers simply killed me -so useful, and efficient. Can't work using my finger sto open the jaws of the plier all the time-. I even find the that the tip of the OHT pliers more thick that the named rest of these tools. (I needed a plier not a long nose pliers). I carry it all the time. What I miss is the scissors of the Surge on the OHT to be perfect.

I really wish Leatherman did a decent, well-equipped bladeless multi-tool (due to UK knife laws forbidding carry of locking blades without good reason). I have a bladeless Gerber and it's OK, I guess, but I feel like Leatherman still have them beaten on quality. It's also in, ahem, "tactical" black, which annoys me almost always, so I'm no fan of it on this OHT either.

Carrying the OHT for over a year now and pretty much love it. The included pouch sadly isn't as good as the OHT itself - the velcro got messed up really fast and I replaced the pouch with a Maxpedition Single Mag Pouch (although I don't like Maxped. that much, it simply was the best option for a most likely indestructable replacement of the original pouch). I wish Leatherman had designed the OHT with the option to add a pocket clip and would come with the bit holder. The wire cutter is sadly not that durable - barely used it and managed to crack a good piece out on one side for no reason. For some time now, federal police in Germany gave the advice that even multi tools cannot be carried accessible when featuring a blade that has a locking mechanism and can be opened with one hand. Keep that in mind when you're planning to buy one living here. Beside that, the OHT is a great tool for stage techs! I bought it at a store for musicians and stage equipment for around 80,-€. Many many times you need to hold a flashlight when working on stage - the OHT won't let you end up with the flashlight between your teeth, drooling allover while working... @Nick: Great review, as usual!

Surprised you didn't mention the "high speed, low drag tactical black colour". This would be so much more fun in some bright colour, which would emphasise the fact that at some level the it's also a more fun Leatherman. It has that fidget factor that a flipper knife has visa-vis Grandad's old nail-nick clunker. But at some level a Leatherman still seems like a tool that a Good Samaritan carrys so that if some poor motorist without a tool kit breaks down, they can rescue you. FYI, I have a Leatherman in the office but carry one of those 101 tools-in-a-box-sets in the car. Plus a phone, since lets be real here, most well serviced cars these days "breakdown" due to a software fault, that even the best Leatherman isn't gonna help with.

@Nick Shabazz, another very great review!! I have the OHT and love it. Several notes. Firstly, the tool organization absolutely has to favor right hand or left hand users because if you'd put the tools more for lefties then the righties would have a harder time.. Another point is that I love the one hand usability. Usually you may reach for the tool when your other hand is preoccupied and having the option to get the tool and use it adds to the functionality. Simple example is when fishing and you need to quickly cut the line, by using the other Leathermans, you'd need to put the rod down and use two hands to get your tools out.. Anyways love your work and keep em coming!!!

Don't misunderstand me; I love Leatherman tools. In terms of ingenuity, engineering, and quality, nobody comes close. This tool, while admittedly cool as hell, is a toy. This was the result of some Leatherman engineers just fooling around. In what universe is having a can opener so critical that you need to do it one-handed? If this is your only way to open up an oxygen bottle, you need to find another tool or another line of work. Does anybody need one of these? Absolutely not. Would it be fun to show off to the guys? Hell yeah. Would I like to have one? Well, maybe. It's pretty cool, but so is my Wave.

Tony Canniffe both offer significantly reduced performance against 154CM? Although they do offer good corrosion resistance and better edge performance over 420HC, probably desirable in a multitool right? Leatherman have used 154CM in the knife blades of other multitools, I’d be happy to see them go with that. To be honest I always carry a “proper” knife alongside my multitool, no matter what tool I have on me because even the best multitool knife sucks next even to the obligatory Spyderco Delica.

Great review Nick however I do disagree with your bad and ugly. For me it’s a negligible weight difference and the size also negligible. A half inch longer really? The size makes it more manageable and handleable when really wrenching on something especially using the pliers. Also I’ve kept a tool like this in my glove box or in my EDC backpack or small sling over the shoulder doesn’t end up on my belt so the belt sheath doesn’t matter too much. Also, The blade steel to me isn’t super important as I’ve always got a high-quality knife in my pocket. The knife is just a bonus in an emergency situation. So I can’t find much negativity going on here at all. I think it’s also an attractive looking tool compared to the others anyway that’s my two cents.

Can you re arrange the tools to make the blade left hand friendly?

I wish I knew. The labelling would be messed up, but it looks possible.

I bought one of these about a year ago and EDC'd it for about a month before concluding that it just wasn't for me. I think its too big for what it is and and OHO everything compromises too much on the tools (both in size and selection), and the saw is so small that its pretty much useless, also the "cutting hook" is way overhyped by reviewers on youtube....lastly here in Europe these are hard to find for under 110 Euro, which they are not even close to being worth.

I’m a lot more forgiving of right handed knives on multitools because I always carry a proper knife along with it anyway.
