The Leatherman Skeletool CX is a multitool from Leatherman which is designed to be lighter, smaller, and more minimal than the company's full-sized offerings like the Wave or Charge. Although it packs several much-needed tools into a lighter package, it omits a bunch of important ones too, and the resulting package is still a bit of a pain in the pocket.
Note: At 8:50, I meant to say 8.46 oz for the Wave, not 4.86.
So, for me, the Skeletool's not functional enough to earn its bulk, not light enough to belong on the body, and not enough tool to belong in the pack.

Nick. Love most of your reviews. I manage a 90 acre estate with 3 employees here in NJ. We do pretty much everything in house from property management to construction to plumbing to transporting 2000 lb bronze sculptures up and down the east coast. So a multi tool of some sort has always played a major role in our day in and day out projects. When the Skeletools first became available I had purchased one for each employee. So I think we have a well documented history of Skeletool use. For the most part everyone still uses the Skeletool as their go to tool, simply because it is just enough tool to save you from going back to the trucks (most of the time!). We have broken our fair share of Skeletools so we are quite familiar with Leathermans repair policies. Top Notch service. Bottom line we have found that the selection of tools and bits found on the Skeletool are really all you need to assist in virtually all of our needs. If you can't do it with a Skeletool chances are you need to go back to the truck and get the proper tool!

Based on your experiences with the skeletools you've been using, is there any particular tool or pivot that I should be concerned about as a likely failure point? Due to some crappy luck I'm back in the market for a smaller, light-medium duty MT and this is high on my list.

I think this particular Leatherman has a very specific niche. In my work at a hardware store, this has every single tool personally needed on a daily basis... and nothing I don't. That's great to me because it gives me a multitool that's not full of features I rarely, if ever use.

I actually carried one of these on my belt loop at work for many years. It was just more convenient for me that way. The reason I carried it so often was mostly for having a good, easily accessible knife, that also happened to have a couple of the tools that I would need most often, but didn't necessarily need all the time. Plus being able to pull it off my belt loop, pop open a beer, then slapping it back on my belt loop in a matter of about 2 seconds was nice, as opposed to fumbling around with a different leatherman, having to fold it open, look for the bottle opener, fight to pry it out of its tiny prison... I really think it was designed as more as a knife with a common tools for people that only need them occasionally. Tl;dr: It all boils down to convenience, for me.

I bought the Skeletool CX for the better blade steel, and the medium-light pliers, and the basic drivers. I have all kinds of multi-tools, from the wonderful LM Surge on down. I don't want the Skeletool to be loaded with files and pry-bars and guided missile hatch openers and tank tread maintenance devices. I can't imagine any sustained use for the pliers outside of an emergency. I don't use any multi-tool for sustained work. My LM Surge and Victorinox SwissTool are the only multi-tools I own that I do not coddle. Even the Wave I am cautious with, though I own three so I do like them. Skeletool CX value = 154CM blade with a little heft. A good medium-use pliers and basic bits are a all I need from it. For me. If the Charge TTi had an awl, I would have stopped there on buying multi-tools. Squirt is TOO light, and great for only truly small work, eg inside computer chassis. The carabiner is very useful to hook onto a pack, though on an inside loop. Pocket clips and outside danglers are a no-go in the wilds. Too many thorn bushes. Eventually everyone outdoors person in Israel puts their knife into their pack, in an easy-to-reach pouch. Or has a bigger sheath knife with good closures. Best review in town--we get both your personal preference and a run-down on the objective realities of the tool or knife. Shalom from Israel.

I never ended up using the pliers on my leatherman sidekick, so I broke it down, took off the pliers, took the tools from the side with the serrated blade and placed them into the spot where the pliers sat . It is now half the size with almost every single tool that it had before. I love it now and carry it constantly.

Interesting way to look at it. I find myself in the opposite boat as my wave has way too many tools that I never use. Really, I don't use the screwdrivers that often either. For me it is typically the bottle opener, the knife and the pliers (for fishing).

i LOVE the skeletool. its my favorite edc multi tool and fits my needs at work and most daily tasks. i like how slim it is....i use the bottle opener the most HAHAHA. the surge, wave and wingman are too bulky and heavy to me with all the other stuff i carry in my pockets. in jacket or pack i carry a wingman or surge. another thing about the carabiner/bottle opener is while it may not be the best to hang off of your belt loop, that carabiner DOES hold the bottle cap. its also very quick and easy to use for example: show up to friends house, grab beer, slide skeletool out of pocket, pop it open, cheers, slide back in pocket all the while someone else is asking for a lighter, or digging out their keys for that bottle opener, using their teeth, or looking for the house bottle opener. i know what your thinking, WHY NOT DRINK TWIST OFF BEERS? hey man, it happens! i like being the quickest alcoholic on the draw and i smoke and you know how you might not get that lighter back! the action is VERY stiff. i do like the bit driver but yeah its a bit awkward. leatherman also makes the freestyle which doesnt have the carabiner/bottle opener but it also doesnt have the bit driver so i passed on that and got a squirt ps4. i like it and have it on a tec p7 pocket clip for my light jacket edc with a victorinox cadet and thrunite ti4. i just ordered a juice c2 that im going to try to attach a pocket clip to and see how i like that because ive been on the fence about buying another skeletool since ive almost lost it a few times. i usually keep the skeletool and d25c ti in the same pocket as my phone and wallet, then on a tec p7 is my house keys and surefire titan plus. its not too bulky for me and the weight is good. my other front pocket usually has a zt 0450, car key on a tec p7, cigarettes, 2 lighters, and possibly another knife like my microtech ultratech but i havent been doing that much lately. 0450 has been enough.

Project manager/surveyor here. When I’m surveying I can be an annoying distance away from the truck to have to go back for a bit driver or pliers to tighten up my tri pod. I obviously also want to carry a pocket knife on me so bada boom bada bing: skeletool. It hasn’t become my 100% set it and forget it solution yet. Some days I have a knife in my pocket and put a Leatherman Rebar on my belt and a bit sleeve in my pocket when I’m specifically going out to survey. Still not sure which one I like more. The skeletool is pretty good at mimicking a regular pocket folding knife so it can be your one size fits all. But for only 1.5 more ounces the Rebar is a full size fully capable multitool. You just have to carry a normal pocket folding knife as well. But yea that’s how the skeletool manifests itself as relevant in my life.

I just picked up this Leatherman. I have a few others I’ve carried but I’ve got so much in my pockets that I gave this a try because of the carabiner. I don’t really like belt sheaths but I do have a large locking carabiner clipped to my belt for holding my keys and this tool clips right to it. I agree the pliers is a little tight and not as trustworthy as my Charge tti but it’s handy to have for light applications. I have real pliers for tough jobs so it goes back to having the right tool for the job. I carry full duty tools for work, my Charge tti in my car, and the Skeletool hooked on my side. Overall I’m happy with it.

I've tried to love the Leatherman Skeletool CX. Basically for the reasons you said. Haven't been able to bring myself to pull the trigger on it. Again, for reasons you said. For how I dress and what I tend to need, this tool is too big and doesn't have the tools I'm looking for. If I'm carrying a multitool, I want scissors on it, and a more neutral grip-stance. I tend to carry the Leatherman Squirt PS4. I keep a Gerber Suspension in the car for more demanding tasks.

Great vid. I have the cx as well, I do like it a lot. my biggest hang up with it, like you said, is using the bit driver. The hold/grip you have to use gets uncomfortable and almost maddening past the 15 minute mark. Great rundown in the vid though. I've been on the fence about getting a wave, this might have been the push I needed to finally get it.

i don't mind the carabiner at all. useful to have a bottle opener, and i use the flat at the bottom as a light strike surface to sound something out. never actually used it to hang the knife off a backpack or anything though. Overall the tool is awesome for me, saves weight and size of a full multi-tool, and still has the tools i need regularly. i've been carrying mine for several years now and everything still works great. despite how it looks, it holds up to hard use. Mine's never let me down.

I carry this every day. While, I don't disagree with what you're saying, I think you are not viewing this for how it was designed. It's a lighter weight light use tool. The Wave is a poor comparison, and a much better tool, as you pointed out. However, being a lighter weight nearly full-size multi-tool is where the Skeletool shines. I use it quite a lot for simple tasks. The knife is great and more substantial than some of Leatherman's other blades. The pliers and driver bits are great for a quick tightening or loosening of screws, bolts, packages, fixing my kid's toys, etc. I would not use it for bigger tasks that require prolonged use. If that's the type of thing you do often, then the Skeletool is not for you. It's perfect for me who works in an office and doesn't need heavy duty tools on a regular basis. It's light enough that I don't mind it in my pocket. Sure, the Wave is a superior tool, but I just wouldn't take it with me all the time. Another thing I love about the Skeletool is how it flies under the radar in most security settings (excluding airports of course). If I have a knife, people seem to automatically get freaked out. The Skeletool almost never causes anyone to be nervous. Huge advantage if you like to have a cutting tool with you at all times. I enjoy the reviews. Keep up the good work.

Agreed, I bought a wave and was immediately put off with the weight. The cx is tolerable. I used to carry a griptillian, but this is like the same size with 4 screwdrivers, pliers, and a bottle opener added. I use the knife the most, obviously, probably the bottle opener next, screwdrivers occasionally, and pliers like once or twice a year. I do have a sak rambler on my keys that I use all the time, so that covers smaller things like tweezers, scissors, nail file, small Phillips, etc.

I got the Skeletool - I really wanted the Rebar and will get one for around the house, but the main thing that sold me was the ergonomics. I have a muscular / neurological problem that makes a lot of tasks difficult, and things like weight and ergonomics factor in a lot. It's easier for me to hold with the curve of the handles on the Skeletool, and I can use the driver in a "t" shape for a better grip (bit driver facing down, closed pliers facing one side, other handle facing other side). My ideal too would be something like a Signal but without the wilderness "survival" tools and a wood / metal file / saw. Having a good 90-degree / box wrench type option is important since I often can't get enough torque using a standard screwdriver. For the tools I'm missing, I can easily supplement that with lightweight camping gear or Victorinox (Ranger, perhaps?) and keep that at work. This tool has the three things I use the most in a light and (for myself) ergonomic format. I might still replace it with a Rebar if I come across a good deal. It's my first Leatherman after being a staunch Victorinox user for eighteen years and after owning one for two weeks I see why people like it. Thanks for your reviews! They helped a fair deal in helping me pick which tool is right for me.

Hi, Thanks for the engaging video reviews. I carried a Skeletool daily for a year. The carabiner was great for holding my keys, which could be quickly removed when I needed to do some non-jingly work, or when I wanted to hand someone my keys without handing them a knife. I was surprised that I got by so well with just the screw bits, the blade, and pliers. This thing saved me so many times on my bike and on my sailboat. The curved handle offers some good torque, which is perhaps why I eventually I twisted the pliers out of alignment. The blade no longer locks and the tool is now kinda wonky - but I was very hard on it. Only thing I didn't like was the partially serrated blade (on my model).

Before I lost mine I loved it being a lineman. My belt around the pole the carabiner would clip on the belt out of the way in between using it striping wire, wearing very thick rubber gloves makes opening and closing a knife a pain, and there's no table to put it down on 35' feet in the air. Pretty specific need but it worked for me.

When using the bit driver on the Skeletool like it's meant to, you will find out that it's way less off center to use than the one on the Wave. Firstly, I think you did a great job with this review. Very concise and succinct, and I appreciate your 1920s radio voice like another commenter said. It’s actually kind of impressive that you seem to heavily use the tools that I loathe and literally never use on a multi-tool. Like the pry bar and the file. I have never, ever been in a pinch and thought “damn I really need to de-burr this piece of metal right here, right now” around the house, or while out and about somewhere else. 😂 Likewise, the pry bar is never something I really need. At best, I need a pliers, or a standard size screwdriver, or a knife. And definitely a bottle opener. So this works perfectly for me. Happy to toss the tools I won’t use and save weight and most importantly, reduce thickness to make it more thin inside the pocket. For everything else, I have a set of tools in my truck (that can’t be reproduced by any multi-tool), and tools in the garage (that will also go beyond any basic truck tool kit).

I'm actually a big fan of the Skeletool CX, in particular that it does have that carabiner clip on it. I've had one for a few years now, and wear it every day on my belt loop. I actually removed the clip from the side of mine as I never wore it clipped to the inside of my pocket. The previous multitool I had was constantly catching on and pulling my keys out of my pocket, so I like to keep it out of my pocket. Any multitool I buy in the future to replace my Skeletool is definitely going to have a carabiner clip on it. And while it doesn't have many actual tools, it does have everything I'd need in a basic day, or at least everything that you'd be able to find on a multitool. Only thing I don't really like about it, is that the wire cutters don't seem to work very well, and have a tendency to get stuck.

Carrying the wave is not ideal in the slightest: 8.5 ounces vs 5 ounces of the skeletool feels substantial in the pocket. I also think the skeletools overall size is almost the exact same footprint of a benchmade mini griptilian, so I disagree about your size complaint of the skeletool. To each their own. I do wish the skeletool had the clip on the other side and tweezers!

BringOnTheCold I just lost my wave after 1 1/2 years of everyday use. And I have to say even though the wave is pretty heavy I wouldn't trade it with a skeletool. It has just way more tools in it.

I have the Skeletool in my EDC bag as a back-up because it is lighter than my Wave+ and has the bare minimum tools in case I go somewhere and did not have my regular multi-tool. This is a good option I think for people who need these tools sometimes and just want to be prepared.

Hello Nick, Great review, again. Doing a good job! Keep it up!! Let me share my view about your hints, remarks and concerns. :-) The knifebelly is indeed a choice in wich I agree; it matches with the curves of the folded tool in general. I believe the bladeshape is called a sheepsfoot, I donot see the advantage in this other than cosmetics. The uncerrated blade is the reason why I bought this one instead of the stainless steel version. The pliers are fine for me, I use them only for lightduty tasks. The musketonhook puzzled me also for a while. The wide spacing shields the bit in use and makes it possible to leave my modified mini ratched in place. Nowadays I see the possibility for a hammerlike insert, witch snaps into the "lanyard" hole and can secure in the little one with a pin. My experience is that flatheadscrews are less and less used and rapidly replaced by Philips- and Torx screws. That leaves the flatheads open for other uses, like pry bits in different sizes. You mentioned also that you modded your EDC beyond recognition,... Sounds interesting to me. A video worthy item?

Sorry but what were their weight again? Skeletool 5 oz and Wave 4.86 oz? :) Btw, have you ever considered testing the tools (e.g. opening) with your left hand? I'm lefty so the placement of the pocket clip in the Skeletool is better for me, but to open the blade you have to turn the tool around in your hand and the blade is rather hard to open since you need you middle and index finger and/or thumb to do that.

I carry the skeletool because when you "know you need a multitool", thats when you should go for your toolbag. When you don't know you need a multitool, thats when you should use a multitool. And a good multitool is the one you always carry. And the skeletool is a really good carry and satisfies 90% of the unexpected jobs. I also carry a SAK huntsman in my sidepack which is a good combo in my opinion.

Wise words. I generally pack a Skeletool if I'm fishing (rather alot of the time), and a SAK Hiker if I'm not. Occasionally I might feel the need to carry both, and if I'm headed backcountry I'll add a Mora. Between those three tools, I've find very little reason to carry my old Wave.

When using the pliers -Why wouldn’t you just remove the screwdriver bit? Good review because you have actually convinced me to get the Skeletool instead of something more heavy duty such as the Wave. For my line of work I hope for something handy, hanging off my belt with quick one handed access to a screwdriver, knife and pliers. - especially when on ladders.

I carry the TSA compliant version (Style PS? CS?) on my keys. It works great for me because I always carry a knife anyway. Then if I'm flying or going in a restricted building, I still have pliers, scissors, etc. Also, here's the beauty of the carabiner: you can quickly remove it from your keys to actually use the tool without being attached to your keys like a SAK.

Hi guys I got a question for you. When it comes to rust how do the black blades rate compared to the polished stainless ones? One would assume that the black ones are some kind of powder coat which should add a layer of protection against rust. I know there may be differences between materials used but to make it easy which would be more prone to rust a leatherman skeletol in stainless steel or the same knife with the green body and black blade?

nearly 5 years of EDC and i haven't needed anything apart from the tools on the skeletool for EDC. I also almost always have a victorinox pioneer / classic that take care of the pry bar / scissors / awl requirements). Usually, a skeletool + PM2 are fine for urban EDC for me. And 154CM hasn't caught any rust in the tropics of India yet. So overall, i am happy with my purchase.

This is my every day. I ride my bike to work and i work in a machine shop doing industrial Maintenance on CNC mills. The unsung hero of the skeletool is actually the accessory bit holder imo. I use the m4-5 hex and i will use the combo Is philips/flathead drivers as my primary bits. I use the flat head for light prying until i can wedge in the pliers for heavier prying. While working in a dirty environment i dont wanna reach in my pockets or put my dirty tool back in my pockets so i will clip the tool on my belt loop. The pliers are mostly used for pulling aluminum splinters and grabbing hot or dirty things. I think the better comparison would be against the curl. The skeletool may be the same length as the wave but to me the important variable when it comes to size is thickness and that is where this tool shines. It has everything i need and nothing i dont.

The carabiner works great as a dangler clip in corner of the pocket. Bail holds it in place in your pocket. Weight down. Much better than the actual pocket clip. I've found this tool works great in compliment to a bigger dedicated folding knife.

The only time I use the carabiner is when I am fishing. I have lost pliers to the surf because they were loosely sitting in my pocket. The carabiner is secure enough so I don't need to worry about losing my tool. The only downside is you have got to keep it out of sand and salt water, but if you clean it often it will still function smoothly.

I know it's an old video, but i am of the party that loves the Carabiner. .. I'll tell you why. First off, i dislike the clip m it just doesn't feel secure enough for what this tool weighs. So i use the Carabiner! I use it like a deep carry clip and clip it to my pocket with the tool inside! Getting it out takes a second, i have a way of pressing in the Carabiner and pulling it up, on think fabric it doesn't need anything, on thick fabric i do struggle a bit. But i do know it's super secure at least! Pry bar would be nice in it, i tend to use the flat head bit to pry and such, which has worked well

I have been carrying my Skeletool for a few months again after not using it for years. I got around some of the shortcomings. I carry my Skeletool in my left pocket. Carrying it on the left side buries it in the corner of the pocket It’s a pliers and screwdriver before a knife in my eyes so I don’t rely on its blade. Left pocket Skeletool, right pocket Spyderco/Benchmade/kershaw/whatever.

There really isn’t one multi tool does all.Are there possibly 2,or 3? I do it all,I bike,I camp,I work in an engineering environment.I know these tools are not designed to replace proper tools which I have, but if I’m in a spot where I don’t have a specific tool it would be nice to feel I can get out of jail,so to speak :) Cost isn’t a major deal,as I can pick what I need up over time. Your recommendations would be much appreciated as I like your review style.I just can’t decide, there are so many options and so much rubbish out there,it’s a headache. Like your videos Man.

I look at Multi-tools like Swiss army knives - there is variety for a reason - differing needs and priorities. Knife, pliers, screwdriver is a big three for a lot of folks so I see the appeal. But like Nick and others I'll usually carry something smaller or larger. Some days a Skeletool works though.

I would love to take my Skeletool when traveling but because of the knife it wouldn't get through TSA obviously. Does anybody have any modifications to get it through TSA? I suppose I could just remove the blade altogether but a scissors or something else in its place would be great. Let me know what you all think. TY

Nick , I never cared for the Skeletool until I picked one up. The wave is nice but feels very bulky in the pocket. The Skeletool almost disappears weight wise in the pocket. I don’t use the clip. The price is another big factor $89.00 vs $40.00 .(Plain Skeletool not the cx)
