Just wanted to comment on the locking system of the Victorinox. In many countries in Europe a knife that can be opened and then unlocked with one hand is not allowed so this unlocking mechanism is on purpose two haned from the Vic so that the tool is legal in Europe.

@@TheBigCanucker He is right for the most part. Leatherman knives are the standard across german workers. Because the law does not allow leatherman knives for private use, it is allowed to be used at work, if you work a craft profession. And there it is the common standard to have a leatherman, so they are quite robust! Greetings from germany :)

Ah! As I was watching the video, I was thinking it must be a legal thing in Europe. I'm not surprised by your post. ☺️ I'm from the US but I know Europe is a bit more strict on the weapons. That is also why I think they did not add a sharp tip on the blade for the Victorinox?
@dustycups
@dustycups 3 жыл бұрын
@@Northanteus There's another version of this same Victorinox multitool which has a more standard drop point blade with a sharp tip, as do most other Victorinox's. This flat end blade is quite a practical work configuration when you want to cut through something tough (the serrations are viciously sharp) but don't want a point to damage someone/something on the thrust. More of a tool than an everyday blade I guess, if you choose to have it. Unfortunately the video didn't show the awl, it has a brutal point which would make a very effective weapon.

Just FYI Victorinox has a decent warranty. I accidentally destroyed one of my SAKs and sent it in and even explained what happend and it was 100% entirely my fault and they sent me back a new one and I just paid postage. They say their warranty doesnt cover alot of things but I think they secretly do.

I bought the first generation of the Wave when Leatherman first brought it out. Back then only the blades locked and the other tools did not. Also the head of the flat head screwdriver was quite a bit rounded at the corners. I can't recall if it came with the small scissors or some other tool. After a year of so of having it, I tried buying the Victorinox Spirit which at that time was about 50% more expensive than that 1st gen Wave, and I do recall part of the reason I bought the Spirit was for its scissors. The quality control on the Spirit was much better in that the tools came out very smoothly, all acting off of the same locking mechanism, and overall felt much better in the hand. I gave my Leatherman to friend because I ended up carrying the Spirit instead. I'm glad to see that Leatherman has made much improvements to the Wave since then. I haven't bought the current version of the Wave yet since I'm still satisfied with the Spirit and I'm not really a collector of multitools (though I do collect and buy more pocket knives than I'll ever need so I understand those who might buy multiple multitools just to have them). I think the bit holder option and replaceable cutting jaws on the current Wave are awesome options.

I had this leatherman for almost 6 months, used it a lot while buiding a house. I kept it in original pouch, wiped it up after each use to keep it clean. It had no contact with water,, but it developed rust spots anyway. Rust was on the blade, pliers, saw, inside the tool. This never happened to any of my victorinox sak. I also have a cheap crappy no-name multitool which took a fair amount of abuse as I don't care whether it brakes or not. It had numerous contacts with water and has never been wiped at all. No rust on it

I have both and while both are great tools, I still prefer the Wave. Here's a breakdown for those who are wondering: Spirit X: + Looks sleek when closed + Pliers are very comfortable to hold + Satisfying clicks when opened and closed + Has an awl + and a chisel + Great can opener - File is worse than the Wave - I know it's a tool, but glossy metal is fingerprint magnet - Blade is not one handed (unless you get the MX) - Scissors really suck Now the Wave Plus: + Pliers open wider than the SpiritX + Amazing diamond coated file + Way better scissors + One handed Blades + Serrated blade + Replaceable wire cutters + Glasses/watch screwdrivers + Ruler (very handy) + Pocket clip + Cheaper - Heavier (8.5oz vs 7.4oz), but also shorter in length compared to the SpiritX - Some tools are harder to open and not on the outside

Hello! Great review! I believe the Leatherman has an edge file as opposed to a metal saw...the XC is designed so that you can carry a dedicated folder as your primary and the serrated as your secondary...I have the Swisstool X, and many of your observations of the XC can be applied to the X...I wish I had the XC's chisel combo tool in the X, it seems to be more versatile...I made similar adjustments to my New Wave(2nd Gen) and I bought the X with ratchet; to give me additional capability for the X...subbed...Good job!

The VIC has way better side cutters than the Leatherman. I have both tools and the VIC can easily cut a nail or barbwire fencing right in two without causing an issue for the teeth while my leatherman side cutters get badly damaged cutting fencing. I’ve even had my leatherman side cutters have one of the replaceable blades fall out completely on the job leaving me hanging with nothing at all out on a job. Even after cutting barb wire and finish nails with the VIC side cutters it’s still able to gently strip wires even after hard use. I know I could pull that stupid wire stripper blade out but to trim wire but why bother.

The pliers open as wide as its safe for the tool to handle. Most people use a plier for tasks that are beyond its capability and size. That’s why leatherman pliers brake. Its not because they are faulty or they have bad metal. They actually have good quality materials. Its 95% user’s fault. Victorinox eliminated this issue by using a stopper on pliers opening range. So according to the pliers size it opens for size of bolts and objects it can handle without issue. Another thing I like on Victorinox is that they have different density metal on each tool.some tools are more flexible or hard in order to take more pressure without braking. Leatherman uses the same metal on the tools and he changes the metal on some models. But is still on the top 2 companies that make multi tools.

I am originally from Russia living in Europe and I must say there is something irresistibly attractive about Leatherman's design... it's the whole function over shape thing that Americans manage to implement in their products. I own a Leatherman Wingman and a top of the range Swiss Army Knife and you know what - the Swiss knife has never been used as it looks too perfect, I'm always afraid to get it dirty, the blade is to perfect for me to re-sharpen easily so I end up not using it at all while the Leatherman has been so useful that I don't even carry any tools in my car any more! If I had to choose a multi-tool I would go with the Wave! Thanks for the review!

I don't know.. I had the leatherman charge tti with the extra bits (until it got stolen) and the tools on the leatherman were pretty hard to get out. I didn't like the scissors. And the screwdriver bits - one thing that was not mentioned is that they are not full-size bits, they are pretty flat which I could feel from time to time especially on the larger Phillips screw. Don't get me wrong, I still loved that multitool. But this time I'm considering going with the Victorinox Spirit XC plus ratchet. That Victorinox ratchet looks like a game-changer to me (reach, use of multitool and ratchet at the same time, full-size bits, the actual ratchet, etc..). Regarding the blade - to be honest I don't care so much about that. It's a multitool blade, which I probably wouldn't miss if it wouldn't be there at all. It's not just about the shape, dimensions, and material, it's also about the handle and handling - and there every (plier-based) multitool will suck. So I'll continue to rely on my Spydercos on that front.

It's a shame that leatherman don't reach the quality construction and machining of victorinox (tolerance, details, quality control etc), especially in non top price tools. It's a shame because leatherman design is better than victorinox design. Also leatherman warranty and innovation is better than victorinox. But American manufacturing and craftsmanship don't reach swiss/European quality. Every leatherman I have (7)have some waggle, some difference from side to other side etch... Could you take your own shower head around and simply swap them out ? Read that the heads build up bad stuff which through the showerhead becomes atomised in usage and enters lungs. Solution is soaking them in chems or vinegar occasionally. Surely most showerheads use standard threads. Sorry if have misunderstood the hotel plumbing dilemna. Do you take a wedge for the hotel room doors ?

Stone Mason Sorry I think I meant to say restrictor. In the base of the shower head is a water restrictor that restricts the water flow to a certain gallons per minute. I think when they install them they jam Teflon tape into the restrictor lowering them even more and barely any water comes out, so I’ve used my multitool to unscrew the shower head and the Swisstool wasn’t big enough to undo it. To me it’s inconvenient, but my wife with her long hair it takes forever to properly wash her hair, so problem solved. Take care and be safe buddy.

The only thing listed on the Victorinox website is it’s called a pulling tool, my guess it’s part of the Awl and is probably used to pull the thread when sowing leather. I also think it can be used for lacing any sort of items where the cord could hurt your hands I would also think for lifting a large pot off of a fire and things along those lines. These are my best guesses I hope that helps.

I would go with your gut on this one. If your used to getting the main tools out one handed the Swisstool is a wee bit of a backward move and I think would be a little bit of a nag. It didnt bother me as much because I used the plyers and scissors the most of all the tools. Take care and stay safe.

I would like to at least try out a Vic at some point, but this is going to be my main edc tool so I needed something that I know will work for me. @@nyinfamous2k2 Being able to open the knife with one hand, especially for selfdefense purposes, is total deal-breaker for me. Same for the other blade, to cut a seatbelt in potential car crash, if one ever had to. These things should be thought through before laying down over $100 on one of these tools! As I said to others, being able to exchange the screwdriver bits on Leatherman is a huge deal for me as well. I love versatility and more options to pick from. Then the additional diamond file surface on Leatherman is something I'd strongly consider.

In Mexico the leatherman guarantee sucks. It is also easier to explain the carrying of the vic as a tool than a leatherman since the vic does not have a knife and much less opening to one hand, i prefer Vic

A buddy of mine lost his leatherman crunch in his yard cutting grass and found it in the spring with no rust. Canadian winter. Thats what made my mind up to buy my surge. Swiss army is top notch too, and id the first to make a multitool. But u cant beat the pliers/ vise grips. I say its more about preference and what job tasks you needs it for. Both are great.

Victorinox have a better quality construction control, finish and tolerance, but not better metal. Victorinox steel is the best rust resistance steel on the market, but some soft. Leatherman 420hc is a little hard than victorinox steel. And, more important, leatherman offer top range steels for the blade, as 154cm and s30v. A lot superior to victorinox. The shame is that leatherman dónt reach the quality control and construction of victorinox.

Recommendation: Leatherman Wave? Well, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, no matter how wrong it may be. All those extra bits & pieces are pure silliness for tools like these. They have no value unless you carry them everywhere with you and who is going lug all that stuff around all day every day? You might as well carry a small tool box and have regular sized tools. But, I hope you enjoy your Wave and like your pockets packed with all those miniature bits & pieces.

Richard Edgecomb well so far they haven’t saved my life and god willing they never have to lol. I never really carry the extra bits in my pocket it’s in my bag. When I have the wave on my hip I mostly use just the wave, but I did grab an aftermarket case that will hold them all. It’s a little heavy and I’ve only used it a couple of time on trips. I really appreciate your opinion and the comment when I get different opinions then mine it allows me think outside my box. Take care and stay safe buddy.

True but even if it was like that the majority carries a folding knife or fixed blade. For me a multitool is not comfortable for knife tasks. I would gladly use a serrated blade of a multi tool for the dirtywork to keep my main blades edge intact and mostly clean. I work in the construction industry and i would rather have a separate blade to cut a rubber tube for instance from a fish that it will end on my plate.
