For me, after 20 plus years experimenting with both brands, it's always Victorinox on the TOP. My Leathermans break and rust, my Swisstools with the same amount of use and abuse, work and look as good as new (literally). The only Leathermans that are decent, and the only that I would suggest, are the older models, (pre removable wirecutters era). The older the better. When it comes to Victorinox, I can't see a difference in quality either it's new or as old as me, they all look and perform the same. If they have a difference in quality, it's too small for the common user to notice, where in Leathermans, the gap is way bigger. Spirit X + Ratchet + Explorer + Knipex Cobra 150, is the best edc tool combo for my needs. Covers so much, in such a little package!

the only things they changed from my 1998 swisstool x to my 2021 one is sturdier pliers with reversed mechanism, better file and slightly better opening of the handles. decent changes, nothing else needed to be changed.

I’ve never owned a leatherman, but I know someone who has had 4, the oldest of which he lost was a good tool, all subsequent leatherman’s be have broken and rusted, pretty much same story as original poster. I’ve had Swiss Army knives since the late 70’s never had a tool break, I did chip the scales once when I dropped it, simple fix to attach new scales, upgraded to plus scales, gained a pen and pin. Knipex cobra xs pliers paired with a Huntsman SAK and the bit driver shown in video is a pretty perfect combination. Swiss and German quality.

@@naturecalls3465 practicality and toolset opinions are different for all users. My comment was referring to fit and finish. @@mikeespineli1717 I like and and encourage people to check out the spirit..unless they have to have the bit exchanger from dealing with different fasteners. frequently or they just have to have to diamond file..I still have a scar from almost 2 years ago when I got pinched by the wave's handles I won't even touch a wave after that..the surge and spirit x for me..the craftsman is just a bonus for me at least after I started using it once I got mine it was made so well I honestly didn't want to even scratch it so I bought another one and waited until it came in before I used my orginal . so I prefer the spirit for both reasons. my admiration and for its performance not to mention I live in a humid environment another reason to appreciate anything made by victorinox

Another great informative vid TTC👍I'm a big fan of both companies and tools but for some reason my initial impression is that I don't like the execution of the one handed opening tab on the Victorinox. I do like the one hand opening of my preferred edc multitool which is the Victorinox one handed Trekker. The thumb hole is the way to go imo. However maybe in use, the tab on the Spirit isn't annoying or a problem as I have not used it and am just speculating. I have owned the first gen Wave for many years and it is a solid and useful multitool especially with the bit kit.

I believe that they are both great tools. I carry both a Leatherman and a Swiss army knife. With the Leatherman I have broken the flat or pry bar on 2 of them. I also don't like the scissors. Everything else is fine including the accessories which I also carry with me in a pouch at all times. It is the Swiss Army knife that I like for the Scissors and knife. The great thing about carrying both apart from having the best of both brands is that I can keep the blade on the army knife razor sharp with the diamond blade on the Leatherman. The one thing hadn't noticed before is that the normal hex head fittings fit in the extension. Great video. Cheers John

I prefer the Victorinox Swisstool Spirt XC. It is the one with the partially serrated sheepsfoot blade that has been discontinued. With the addition of the new clip it is in my eyes the best edc for pocket carry. I don't care for the one handed opening blade. I never find myself in a situation where it is absolutely necessary to open the blade one handed. On the contrary, my favorite tool to keep in a drawer or in the car is the Leatherman Surge combined with the bit kit. I do not own any imperial tools as I live in Switzerland. So those that come with the Surge are very handy for the occasional freedom screw.

Nice to see an impartial review Ben, so many leatherman owners are unable to consider anything else due to either national pride or brand loyalty regardless of the quality of the tool. Totally agree. I’d also like to add that if Leatherman customers were more honest to themselves, they wouldn’t allow leatherman quality control and manufacturing drop so hard in the last few decades. @@chrisnelson1935 all the complaints I personally saw from my models or friends/colleagues models: - tip not touching perfectly (leatherman won’t fix it); - blade HT off (breaks); - pliers HT off (breaks, especially on twisting, leatherman fixed but said that you shouldn’t twist with their pliers, which is absurd since you are removing 50% of the work a plier can do); - multiple surge scissors either don’t cut because of weird sharpening angle or they have a space between blades and softer materials can’t be cut because of this; - frame got cracked when closed because of bad quality issue; - pliers, scissor and knife play are not unusual; - bit drivers are hella soft and will break after not much use; That’s just from the tip of my head, I’m out right now so I will add more and ask for my group of friends (we are all multi tool collectors) to add what problems they had, but it’s not unusual to have problems with Leatherman. I get it that they want to cut down cost so quality control isn’t as good and mass produced items will have problems more often than not, but it’s maddening how many problems I found on several tools during all my collecting years. I won’t even touch what I read on forums because it’s not fair since I don’t know the users, but I know my friends and I know how they use their multitools (mostly for collection) and we talk when we find issues. There is a KZfaqr (maxlvledc), good lad, that pointed out some of these issues on brand new leathermans he bought (out of the box), so it’s really not that uncommon to find issue with their tools. I hope this helps, have a good evening.

I have to go with Victorinox in general. I have had the original Swiss Tool for over 17 years and it has not let me down, heavy but tough. - think using it as a hammer multiple times with no damage.. I tried the Leatherman Wave but I am left-handed - that is an issue with the Wave. You will get many blood blisters from the 2 raised thumb openings on the blades when you try to use the pliers left-handed.. Just a watch out for the lefties out there, righties give it a try in your left hand and you will see what i mean. I think Leatherman could have considered 1 out of 10 of the users and made it ambidextrous. I will go with the Clip if it is ever available. Hope this helps someone. The thumb tab on the blade of the Vic makes the blade considerably shorter if you are making through cuts. Slicing an apple would make the tab hang up as it passes through the apple. The curved handle of the Vic is a great design in that it prevents you pinching your hand if the pliers slip, something I’ve done a few times on the Wave. I wish the Wave micro driver would fit into the bit extension since it would be less clumsy to use when adjusting eyeglasses. The Leatherman pocket clip comes with a removable lanyard clip which is nice if you are tying off to your belt since you can remove the tool easily if required. Does the Vic have a lanyard hole?

Finally got a Spirit X. Been carrying it for a week. The build quality is not impeccable or flawless. The Jaw finish was not ground to be symmetrical with the one I received. The handles have pits left in the handle from manufacturing that could not be polished out. Does it impact function? No. Am I otherwise pleased with the tool. Yes. Is it customizable. No. Is it user serviceable? No. Is it superior to Leatherman? Gerber? No. Rust has never been an issue for me, because I properly care for my tools. The victorinox file is great. However it is a little too coarse for some applications. The tool locks on the Swiss Tool, are noticeably weaker than they are on many Leathermans and Gerbers in my collection. Yes I recommend adding the Swiss tool to your collection. It's definitely eye candy. However based on the tool I got from Victorinox. Their quality control is lacking and can certainly use improvement. Concerning the MXBS model. They are asking way too much money for such lazy design improvements regarding a pocket clip $20, and a stainless steel tab added to the knife blade and serrated blade. They didn't even add a snap to the holster. Still going with Velcro. If they want to ask $200 + dollars they need to do better than add a $40 socket set, black finish, or not include upgraded blade steel like S35VN. They are asking more money than Leatherman is for less. The steel they use is recycled stainless steel of their own blend. Unacceptable. No matter how much you polish it to a mirror finish.

I had the Wave first because the Spirit initially only had the butterknife as it's knife which was not going to work for me just in case I don't have my regular knife on hand, but when the Spirit X came out with the spearpoint blade, I immediately got it and never looked back or got confused to which plier based multitool I'm carrying from now on. What mattered to me is not what the Spirit did or didn't have but what it didn't do to my barehand. I can use the Spirit barehanded without the fear of pinching, the pliers' pivot point don't stick so much that my hands and fingers get tired of opening it and you can squeeze the handles, again barehanded, really hard without the tool leaving marks on your palm and fingers. I have a separate knife and I can always bring my diamond sharpener that fits in my pocket if I need to, but I don't have a spare right hand to bring with me. It wasn't the steel, it wasn't the implements all being outside or even the shininess of the tool, it was the comfort and ease of use that really made me chose the Spirit X.

I love the s30v blade and the length of it, and love the gut hook on the charge+ , but that's about it, the glass screw driver bit is waste of space, the sciossr has lots of plays in it although it is longer and opens wider. the tool is notable heavier and fatter. overall , MXBS is my new daily now, nothing to complain yet, otherthan it came with too much oil on it and all the small tools are tight in there, almost fingernail broke tight to get then out.

When you opening and closing tools the feedback is excellent. The only thing that I don't like is the scissors limited opening. But I already adjusted that with a Dremel, and now everything is fine. But is hard to decide which one is better. The Wave plus is a very good multitool with a very good serrated blade, diamond file, bit exchanger. It is my favorite on the jobsite. @@coryulrich6489 bad quality control for me. Leatherman quality is really really really bad after 2000/2003 to nowadays, they dropped to SOG and Gerber level, when before 2000 they were a competitor for Victorinox. Nowadays? Victorinox wins on quality of materials hands down. Also the reason why they never felt the need to grant 25 years of free maintenance, because they can last longer with no problem at all. Leatherman, on other hand, will break down after a decade of not hard use, or way faster if you use it harder. That’s my take from owning Swisstool, Spirit MXBS, SuperTool300, Surge, Charge and Style PS. The SuperTool is from 1995/1998 if I’m not mistaken and it’s the better one ironically. Leatherman REALLY dropped the ball and got their head stuck inside their asses lately.

The spirit doesn’t have a ruler because it’s more ergonomic than any leatherman (look at its shape, its no competition there). However the other swisstool (the non spirit one), which is the Surge competition, it has a ruler and its probably the best 20cm ruler on any multi tool for hows designed. So if you need a ruler on it, go for the bigger and heavier version. If you want a pocket friendly one, you go for the spirit one.

@@kennogawa6638 If i need tweezers I will just carry a SAK with me. Any two/three layer SAK is so light and so thin that you won’t even notice it. Especially if you go for the keychain one. And again Victorinox tweezers have another level of quality compared to the style (at least mine PS). I don’t see the argument there, I personally don’t need tweezers on a daily base, but with a Victorinox Manager (or any other keychain one) you will get better tweezers than any Micra or Style. It’s all about quality of construction and material, and in that regard Letharman loses on any front in the last 20 years. Victorinox is in another league if we talk about that.
@clintwestwood3539
@clintwestwood3539 2 жыл бұрын
@@kennogawa6638 also I want to add an observation since we are talking about add-ons: the fact that you can put stuff inside a leatherman tool it’s not a good thing if not intended (like SAK scales), it just means that the fit wasn’t well thought and they didn’t optimised the space they had. It’s a compromise people find to make use of the extra volume they are carrying when it’s not used from the company itself. But if they wanted us to put tweezers inside a full sized leatherman, they’d just put them inside or tell you that there is a space for it (like 91mm SAKs have a pin holder but sometimes no pin, it’s still intended to carry a pin, not something people found out to optimise the bad fit). That’s my thought about it. However, again, if you need tweezers, Rambler Manager and/or Minichamp will do a great (better) job. You also get pens et cetera
