Hirokazu Kanazawa (金澤 弘和, Kanazawa Hirokazu, 3 May 1931 - 8 December 2019) was a Japanese teacher of Shotokan karate. He was the Chief instructor and President of the Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation, an organisation he founded after he left the Japan Karate Association (JKA). Had the privilege of training with this great inspirational man on many occasions. My fondest memory is of him walking the line as we trained, he came to me and paused, looking at me he said 'text book' I have never felt more proud in my life. He will be sorely missed but his legacy will live on. Oss Sensei.

Trained under him many times. An absolute gentleman warrior. A true Samurai. Interestingly he remained JKA to his boots despite being the founder and leader of SKI. He was so open to different styles and influences. He even incorporated kundalini yoga practice into his training. A legend and a genius. Oss Shihan

I had the deep honor, one time, to be taught by Kanazawa Sensei, during his visit to a remote village in Lincolnshire, UK. As a twenty year old brown belt I was awestruck to be in the presence of a legend. As a 58 year old man I am still awestruck. Domo Arigato Sensei.

I feel so emotional watching this wonderful tribute video, thanks for sharing. Legend is a word used too loosely these days but totally appropriate for O-Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa. A pioneer who helped launch Shotokan Karate globally and who I had the honour of being taught by in HK in 1999. My Sensei, Dr. Clive Layton wrote his biography and when I mentioned I was his student visiting from London he broke into his famous smile and warmly shook my hand. A gentleman who "walked the walk" RIP and Oss !

Mr. Kanazawa shall be very much missed. He has been a true contributor to the Ancient Art. We are more than grateful as well as privileged to have benefitted by his selfless instruction and guidance. As the last surviving exponent of the founder Funokoshi, his disciples will continue the legacy. Such dedication is monumental in this continuation and is shown in the comments of this video. I learned so much over the years and at 70 years old now “somewhat” understand this depth of his “real” teaching. Never stop learning and search the inner side of this martial art as the search never ends....

This video made me sad, and happy at the same time. I started practicing Shotokan in 2000 when I was 9, but had to stop years later, due to bad knees. I ended the journey after recieving my 3rd kuy,- wish I've had been able to go a bit further and claim the 1st Dan. I always took pride in watching Kanazawa's KZfaq videos, doing the different Katas. I trained with Sensei Kanazawa a few times. I never really believed in the spirituality of karate, a punch was a punch a kick was a kick and it was blood and sweat. The only person I ever trained with that made me feel different was him. He was in his 60s i guess then, but even then he seemed magical he seemed very different. I know I probably havnt explained how I felt very well.

It would be nice to mention that he won All Japan Karate Championship, the very first one - in 1957...with a broken arm against Mikami sensei (I think) ... That was amazing on its own... My Japanese sensei from JKA/JKS, Masayoshi Katayama (R.I.P) , always said that Kanazawa and Asai senseis were the Pioneers and Giants of Modern Karate... even though they didn`t like each other too much... :)
