Percy's voice actor is STILL mad at Scanlan's voice actor for throwing his cursed gun in the acid.
@VegetaLF7

And with good reason. While Percy does eventually build/acquire replacement guns (he still has Bad News and we see him building Retort at the end), none of them ever approach the same level of damage and value that the List reached. To my memory Retort is just a gun with no magical effects while the List had two enchanted barrels to do magical damage, one fire and one ice.

As to the gun: they said in the behind the scenes that the entire season they made sure that he reloaded every six shots. The only time that doesn’t happen is during this final battle when the demon takes control. The implication being that the demon is reloading as they go and/or is charging the very gun itself.

When Orthax takes over, Percy actually switches from using his left to his right hand. Just a wonderful detail to further show who is in control in those moments.
@VegetaLF7
@VegetaLF7 2 жыл бұрын
It's also worth noting that throughout the show Percy is always very carefully shown to be only capable of firing six shots before needing to reload when firing normally. He only has six barrels and after those are fired he has to use one of his speed loaders to reload in order to continue fighting. But whenever Orthax takes over, suddenly he isn't limited to six shots (first seen when Percy executes Stonefell, he fires *seven* in one volley). He stops shooting bullets and starts firing magical blasts as Orthax provides the ammunition in these settings. Percy doesn't reload at all during the Orthax battle in this episode.

In regards to Rick's comments about the characters being pretty basic archetypes, this is actually a common comment/criticism of campaign 1 compared to campaign 2 and campaign 3. All of the cast really seemed to push themselves to make more original/unique character concepts in later campaigns. I actually very much agree with this, as while I love Vox Machina, The Mighty Nien and (thus far) Bells Hells are way more interesting as a whole. That said, I don't fault them for going with more basic archetypes for Vox Machina. As an important point to remember, they started as characters in a one-shot for Liam's (Vax's player) birthday that then became a normal D&D home game that only even later became the streamed show we know. At the time as well, most of them were new to D&D, and thus it makes sense why they went with more "safe" character concepts. It also makes sense then why Percy, whose player Taliesin had played D&D a lot in the past prior to that campaign, is a bit more complicated than the others. The way the characters are in campaign 1 is very much indicative of these origins.

Complexity of character is one thing, what you do with it is another ; like a very simple dish cooked to perfection with just the right seasoning. The best example of that is Grog. It is like a cult. They blindly follow Vecna (the whispered one) like cult members do. She made a pact to save her loved one. They spend years serving the whispered one and, with time, like Vader, they became more and more evil. It's a path with no return. That is actually what this last episode was about, Percy was on the edge, like Anakin was, like Delilah was.

I kiiinda get what Aaron is saying, we don't see whether or not Delilah had a sadistic evil streak in her before the Whispered One stepped in, but I think the motivations of the Briarwoods are fairly well laid-out. And the motivations of the Whispered One are intentionally mysterious. But she does almost literally say, "We did everything you asked, now give me what I want." I don't know, maybe prior knowledge of how pacts generally work in fantasy settings is filling in holes that I didn't even realize were there.

Aaron, I am pretty sure that if u gonna get more info on briarwoods maybe is gonna be on 3rd season.. I'd they even make a mention of it. We get a lot more info from interviews and talks with Matt and Taislin. Delilah made a deal to get Silas back, the price was to find the zigurate and perform a ritual to bring "whispered one" (vena ) back. They got info that zigurate was in whitestone, si they went there an tortured everyone to find were the zigurate was hidden.. and from there u see the rest.

I felt the Briarwoods' backstory was pretty straightforward and easy to understand to be honest. I don't think they were meant to be the villains who see themselves as the heroes or that their fall is necessarily meant to be this tragic event like Darth Vader. When I listened to Aaron's argument I felt like he in the end just wanted to sympathize with the Briarwoods because he felt their backstory was sad, but then when he saw how terrible they were he just couldn't and felt they should have just been villains and we didn't need that backstory. The way I saw it was the backstory was meant to show us how they got there. It's not necessarily meant for us to sympathize with them but understand why they are doing all of this. The Briarwoods taking enjoyment for the terrible things they have done doesn't really clash with how they started for me. Real people can love other people and still do terrible things or be selfish. It might make their story stronger for me. The Briarwoods aren't kidding themselves into thinking they are doing this for a greater good or are the real victims of their actions. They know they are doing bad but are not only accepting this is their price to pay for the husband's survival and have taken joy in it. They are terrible people who love each other but were sadistic and selfish. For me that painted the picture of who they were. It didn't make them lesser to me.

@WolforNuva 2 жыл бұрын
Precisely, not every villain backstory needs to make them sympathetic, all it needs to do is help us understand them as characters. Delilah wanted something bad enough that she was willing to make a deal with a terrible entity to make it happen. You don't get that deep into dark magic and attempt to return one of the most dangerous undead monsters the world has seen without knowing what you're doing. She just didn't care.

Only an idiot things the villain MUST be a one dimensional mindless murder drone. Delilah and Sylas LOVE one another deeply and forever, to the exclusion of all others which includes murdering everyone else if it'll preserve one another. i think the motivations for what Deliah did was ysmaptehtc, she loved her husband so much she couldn’t stand for him to die and be left alone the issue is that the path they chose to keep themselves alive and together was at great cost to others it’s also hinted that both Silas and Deliah because of their use of dark magic lost there souls and or who they were the same way Percy was almost corrupted by the Demon fully what they were is no longer who they are, their humanity was draned/surrendered a long time ago there is sympathy in the idea that they shattered the world for their love but we still have to acknowledge that they hurt a lot of people to do so the fact that their current selves take joy or don’t care is only a sign of what they gave up for themselves they are a cautionary tale about faustian bargins and or when you are so obsessed with yourselves that you don’t care or think of others

Delilah's motivation was literally: I love my husband so much I would sell my and everyone else's soul for him. That's really all you need. You're not supposed to cheer for her victory, but you are definitely supposed to see her as a tragic villain. She's a monster, but she's a relatable one for a lot of people who have lost people they love. It's a faustian bargain. You're not supposed to like her before the fall. You really have no idea how good or bad of a person she was prior to the deal she made. She bargained with dark forces for the love of one person. Does it matter if she used to be a good woman when she's hanging people on the Sun Tree? She's obviously not anymore. I find it hilarious that you invoked Darth Vader and the prequels that explained his origin. The explanations were completely unnecessary. Darth Vader was an amazing villain without anyone knowing all that dumb youngling garbage. We can see at the end of Jedi that he is a broken man who chose evil and it corrupted him into a robotic killing machine. What more do you need? I feel like Eric is the only one who understands the idea of "an old story well told". Not everything has to have a gimmick or a goofy anime twist. Sometimes you just want to see a tale that has good characters, good action, good emotional moments, etc.

Yeah, her motivations to save her husband and love are sympathetic and tragic but the fact is they made the deal, and surrendered their humanity and souls for selfish reasons, even if it was for love we don’t have to cheer for them but we do understand how they came to this point and why and it's more than “we’re bad and that’s why” it was something deeper than that.

I think in a nutshell, it´s that the flashback would have been a lot more impactful had it encompassed longer period of time both prior and post what we got. Like, show flashbacks who they were before, how they met, how in love they were and then how the deal changed them. The flasback in it´s current form was mainly a fanservice for the cr fans. From storytelling perspective it was kinda lucking. All the info you got from that was something you would have pick up from context clues from Delilah simply talking anyway. So as far as lore goes, nothing much would have been lost had the flashback not been there at all. And it also wasn´t long enough to make the viewer invested in their relationship, so the very cliche "deal with the devil for love" wasn´t particularly impactful.

She wasn't a good person prior to finding The Whispered One. Think of all the secrets and potential back-stabbing of the Cerberus Assembly in Campaign 2. They aren't nice people.

Percy put his hand over the barrel, put his body between Delilah and the demon, and shed his own blood to save her from it. It's the ultimate expression of him letting go of his hate and desire for revenge. THAT'S what drove the demon out.

You guys mentioned Percy not running out of ammo this episode, and I wanted to point something out. Percy's gun is very clearly an experimental weapon, if you count how many times his gun doesn't work or just straight breaks during combat, its very clear this thing is an absolute mess that works maybe 2/3 of the time at BEST. The only time there is an exception to that rule, where his gun works damn near flawlessly for a full/multiple reloads, is when he is smoking. and it all becomes clear why here right at the end. That creature gave him the design for that gun, and through percy can manipulate it to work a *bit* better than it should otherwise. Hence, the "I have 57 more rounds in this 6 round magazine" type moment. All of this to say, this is a showcase of why percy's gun breaks so often, even during the game this is based off of. Cause if it didn't he would be ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYINGLY BROKEN

On the subject of waiting for Percy to reload, the creators said in a commentary stream that they were actually very careful to count the number of bullets Percy was using and keep it realistic and limited...until Percy goes fully possessed . Then they just went ham because Orthax (the demon) was providing him more power. (If i remember correctly, they also referred to Percy's various level of possession by spiciness, which I thought was funny. Ghost Pepper Percy has unlimited ammo)

Regarding the issues around the (in)completeness of the Briarwood backstory: Delilah was an extremely powerful necromancer in direct service to a powerful, extra-planer, undead entity. An entity that now has a completely unresolved spinning orb of death under Whitestone. That doesn't exactly sound like a wrapped up story line, does it?
@wyattsmith3020
@wyattsmith3020 2 жыл бұрын
As for the final moment in the battle with Orthax: Percy half-snapped out of Orthax's control and used his left hand to cover the barrel and grab the gun. That's when he says, "I won't let you". Orthax still had control of the left hand and fired. The pain then fully snapped Percy out of his control, so Orthax went and hid in the gun. Took someone else and watching it ten times to notice.

I knew i would love the show unconditionally, (similar to Eric and Star Wars) but I wanted people outside the fandom to enjoy it as well. It really feels like they wanted to replicate the feeling of the stream, which is great for me, but a little jarring for the general audience. If this show was successful, hopefully that will inspire more fantasy and maybe even sci-fi creators to get into adult animation. That would be awesome!

You need to be paying NO attention to not understand the Briarwood's motivations. They are evil, because they serve the Whispered One. Sylas was dying, and nobody could save him. Delilah found the Whispered One and he's like "Hey, I can save him. You serve me, I save him" And Delilah's sole motivation is her husband. It's VERY clear even if you're only watching this and you've never seen a single episode of Critical Role. So being evil is just a byproduct of getting what they want. They want to be together forever, Vecna will do that if they serve him, therefore they serve him. Everything they DO is Vecna's plan, all this Whitestone stuff is HIS plan, they are doing this ritual because he told them to, and she said "We did everything you said" and she just wants Sylas back, but then the ritual fails. Her ONLY desire is to be with Sylas, and his desire is to be with her. They're NOT complicated. If the Dawnfather had saved Sylas they'd probably be virtuous paladins. Any price is acceptable so long as they get what they want. The reason you get this backstory is so you can see WHY they follow Vecna, because he gives them what they want. Without it you'd just be like "Oh they're JUST evil, for no reason. I dunno." Knowing their motivations is necessary to understand them. A bland, one dimensional villain that is evil just because isn't very compelling. Even Vecna isn't just being evil for shits and giggles, he has motivations too.

Some background info on the Briarwoods (some very light spoilers for the CR livestream): Most of the information we have on their history is hinted at more than explained outright at different times over the livestream. In campaign 2 we learn more about the order of mages in which Delilah was a prominent member before she was expelled for turning Silas into a vampire. Some of the other wizards in the order are pretty severely awful so it says something about Delilah's character that she was a member and that she was kicked out of this pretty shady group. Likely she was always more interested in power than in morality and having lost her home and her position it makes sense that she would turn to the source of power that had saved her husband. The whispered one would have been guiding her and promising her safety and security for her and Silas and she was willing to do anything to have that again. We know almost nothing about Silas. As far as we know he was actually a relatively decent guy prior to becoming a vampire. His only focus in life (and undeath) seems to have been loving and supporting his wife in all things. The impression I've gotten from Matt's explanation of Silas is that he may even have been a good guy if not for Vecna, Delilah and the curse of vampirism.

When it comes to them being traditional archetypes, the reason why that is is due to the fact that this campaign was the first time playing dnd for most of the players. If I'm correct, the only ones who had played before were the DM and Percy's player. So most of the other players wanted to make archetypal characters so they could role-play them easily and learn how to play the game. Them being actors made it really easy to do the role-playing and also to add more depth to the archetypal characters in the campaign, but they were mostly going for safer options for characters for their first time playing and had no intentions of even streaming the game originally, much less making it into a show. So that's why they seem so archetypal, cuz they were designed to be that way. If you want to see more twists on archetypal characters and more interesting character stuff, I would recommend Campaign 2 and/or 3. After they mostly figured out how the game works while playing the 1st campaign, they made more interesting characters for the next campaigns and they're really good.

Technically Marisha and Liam both had also played D&D before... marisha got introduced to it when she started dating Matt so she only had a couple of years of knowledge... And Liam played back when he was in high school so it had been decades since he had last played. But yes, both Matt and Taliesin are the most experienced players at the table with decades of experience at that point. Their very first session Marisha didn't play at all because she was helping other people who had never played before learn the rules. So she definitely had a rudimentary level of experience enough so that she was able to help other people figure things out.... She then unfortunately decided to play a druid which is NOT a very easy class to play due to the sheer amount of spells you have access to... So yeah she did the best she could with the knowledge that she had while playing a more difficult class.... Which made her seem significantly significantly more inexperienced than she actually was... Due to the slip-ups and mistakes that she would make when casting.

[no spoilers] As a Critical Role watcher, I think Aaron is both right and wrong. That flashback scene really did blue-ball everyone who wasn't in on it, because there is a little more story to the Briarwood's evil turn that they didn't include in this season, and the cold open was really short to actually give it the emotional weight it could have. So, in that sense, I completely understand how Aaron felt it could have showed a little more, or not showed anything at all. On the other hand, I think it was pretty clear that, in a moment of desperation, Delilah was seduced by whispered promises from an entity she didn't know or understand, and set her and Sylas on an evil path because she loves him. In her own words: "Sylas, I broke the world for us". She knows she's fucked up, but she doesn't care what happens to *literally* everyone, as long as she can be with Sylas forever. That's her only condition. In my personal opinion, I would've liked that flashback to have been longer so that the emotional impact hit harder. I also think they could've saved it for later in the series, but I understand that it's better to have it now rather than possibly get cancelled and not have the flashback at all.

During the Briarwood flashback, there are unintelligible whispers in the background. They seem to be telling Delilah to find the book, so probably told her where it was. CR knows Chekov's advice that if you show something in act one, it has to eventually be used. There's nothing hanging around that won't eventually, be brought back. It may take 4 seasons, but it could all come back. According to Matt, Delilah was a wizard who had dabbled in necromancy. That library was her secret library of necromantic tomes which she had to keep hidden. When her husband was dying, she looked for any way to save him. She didn't care of the cost. The Whispered One accepted that bargain. It told her where to go to find a ziggurat she could use to bring him back. She was forced into the ritual five days too early. Did it work or not? You'll find out.

I'm trying to understand Aaron's point about the Briarwoods - was he saying that while the flashback told us *how* they got the way they are, it didn't adequately show what they were like beforehand, and thus it didn't have the impact it was aiming for? So since there wasn't the transition of character/behavior in the flashback, he'd rather they not have bothered with the flashback in the first place, and left them as straight villains? Is that what he was saying?

Good discussion after the episode. The backstory of the main villains is included to point to the main tension of this story, of 2 Dark Paths travelled -- Percy's Vengeance and Delilah's Undead husband and Patron and battle against anything that might separate them -- and the Possibility of Redemption. Clues in the final episode point to this: Percy had to forgive Delilah to defeat his demon Orthax, but Delilah refused to give up her devotion to her Patron. These are Classic themes. In this telling it's the friends that help bring Percy back from the edge of total Darkness, but Delilah has only herself and her bitter disappointment at the end. Thanks. Have a good one!

The scene with the demon inside Percy’s mind was a premium example of the power of a good writer’s room in doing this adaptation. While a game like D&D can be a powerful tool for storytelling, there are some things you simply can’t do as powerfully as this. The writing of those scenes, working with the wonderful artistic direction, just leveled that aspect of the story way up. Similarly, scenes like being able to s e certain things from the villains’ perspectives, flashbacks, etc also showed the power of adaptation. I’m really pleased by the way this show is coming along. The original, Critical Role version was really great storytelling. There are some things I wished hadn’t had to be edited for time or whatever, but I think those are nitpicks. It’s not like those things don’t exist if you want to see the source material. Critical Role is there on the internet forever. This adaptation is taking that wondrous framework, and making it even better for the viewer of the animated format. To answer your question: The show has been very successful for Prime Video. It was the #1 show on the platform worldwide during the whole time of it’s release, and part of that time was also during the platform premier of Jack Reacher, which was much more widely promoted. The show seems to have a lot of pull internationally.

If you're wondering, the Conclave arc is the real meat of Campaign 1, and it'll be amazing to see play out animated. There will be tears aplenty. Also, this invasion scene? Just as terror inducing for the cast when it happened to them live.

Yeah, that was a powerful moment in the stream, easily one of the best cliffhanger endings Matt gave us across the campaign.

14:14 It ended even better than that -- the players/PCs were very much caught off guard, to say the least. ;) (See: Critical Role Campaign 1 ep 39, from time index 3:24:00 onwards)

I believe the only thing about the back story of the Briarwoods in the show that was questionable was the speed with which they gloss over her randomly running and finding a book in some unknown place. I can see how the viewer would be confused or thrown off by how she knew it was there, what it was exactly and if she was already interested in these types of things before hand. Beyond that however, i think they did a good job showing Delilahs desperation when it came to her husbands life being on the line and the lengths she would go to be with him. And once you cross that line it only adds to reasons to cross the NEXT line and so on. She was in love and willing to do anything to be with her lover for all eternity....and so she paid a hefty price for it.

Knowing how epic the Conclave is, the ending is SOOOOO hype.

Their game was never meant to be a show or even a live streamed campaign, it was a home game for a bunch of first time dnd players and a few that haven't played in ages so i can understand the more basic villian type. Word got around of there home game through there voice acting jobs and got asked by geek and sundry to stream it, than later critical role went solo with streaming there game on there own twitch and youtube channel. They had only so much money for only so many episodes so they had to leave so much out that was in the streamed campaign. They did do extremely well on kickstart but animation is extremely expensive. So I feel they did great for the fans of the streamed campaign and did great for new fans to enjoy the show with out needing prio knowledge. The show happenings are very very close to exactly how the campaign went which they didn't entend to be streamed or made for tv. I feel this is made for both fan types but wasn't made to be amazing super deep and clean but to be a passion project for there own satisfaction. I hope I made sense.
