It was a decent introduction, I thought (as a fan). A bit hectic, and they could have dialed back the body fluids a TAD, maybe. The music is good and the backgrounds are beautiful. Overall they're doing a good job of condensing the source material and letting people know that this will be, as Matt Mercer's put it, "an odd combination of classic fantasy and modern slapdickery," with significant tonal/emotional range. A tip for figuring out where to start watching the AP (actual play) content is to check out the CriticalRole subreddit, which has several "guides for newbies" type posts.

@@TimpanistMoth_AyKayEll It's quite intentional how they portrayed Scanlan AND Keyleth in E1. It establishes the innocence and general naivete of Keyleth, but then quickly shows the little rose has thorns, and well, Scanlan had to be portrayed as a lecherous little shit so his character growth means as much as it ended up meaning in the AP

Fandom Zone, a great place to start with Critical Role, considering you like comic books, might be the origin stories comic books available via the DarkHorse website. The comic book series tells the stories of the characters and the events that transpired pre-stream. Those events were what happened when their DnD campaign was just a home game. They would play together one or two weekends per month around the dining room table. Also, The entire stream series is freely available in podcast form so you can listen to it on your own time rather than needing to sit down and watch the episodes (which are all available for free as well). As a Critter myself, the idea of watching or listening to over 400 hrs of content (for Campaign 1 alone) might sound daunting but if the story grabs you it quickly becomes captivating and binge worthy (IMO).

Personally, I've started with Campaign 2 - "The Mighty Nein", and it really wasn't too difficult to listen to 4+ hours episodes when doing other things (either as a podcast or the video). I'm still watching the Vox Machina campaign (1) as of this moment, but I would suggest starting off pretty much as the show did, with the Briarwoods Arc and supplement it with summaries of the previous ones. I feel like the show might be a good way of getting some initial info on the party (also, would totally watch reactions to the Campaign).

I recommend watching Critical Role's series of short videos "Handbooker Helper" the explains the basics of D&d before starting to watch the stream for anyone that doesn't understand the rules. It will help enjoy the stories more without having to try to figure out the mechanics of the game in the process.

This is how I started watching as well. I started early in C2, got caught up... then some time later started picking up C1 as well. That's the nice thing about it. With everything online... you can watch the series at your own pace. Each campaign stands on its own. Yeah - there's occasional callbacks and inside jokes that reference previous elements. But you absolutely do not need to know them to be on pace with the current campaign. You also do not need to do math. Or know anything about the game. You can pick up the mechanics while watching the crew play. If you want to clarify the finer details of a mechanic you keep seeing the crew invoke, the basic 5e rules are open licensed so they're widely available online and a web search away. But there is plenty to enjoy going in with zero previous knowledge of the 5e rules or tabletop RPG in general.

If the 100+ episode count scares you, Campaign 3 LITERALLY just started at the end of last year. We've got the first 11 episodes already. That said, starting right now with the nice new studio and real crisp audio and practically professional D&D players makes it really jarring to go back to Campaign 1. Especially early Campaign 1. Campaign 2 is all up and aired from lvl 2 until they ended at lvl 16, so it's the most complete if you prefer that. FYI, the first 99 episodes were filmed pre-pandemic and the rest of the campaign they are sitting 6-10 feet away from everybody. Including the married couples, nobody is near anybody, so the interactions feel a little different and the combat can get weird because they're trying to see miniatures from that far away (or on little tvs they got set up but those don't always get a good angle to see.) Campaign 1 is PERSONALLY my favorite. We all agree to start with the Briarwood arc, but where can get tricky. I'm weird. I say "watch these 7 specific episodes and then start watching everything from episode 28 on." Those seven episodes (14, 18-21, 24&25) set up the NPCs, plot and characters the best without watching the uninteresting first arc (1-11) and miss the majority of the most problematic player's annoying moments. If you that's too confusing or you just like the group and can handle the audio/visual issues well, actually starting from episode 1, 14, 16 or 24 are all good starting points.

Hi friends I am so exited that the critterverse is expanding and growing! If comic books are your jam and you want a quick cheat sheet into the backgrounds of the characters from Vox Machina, Darkhorse has at least 2 volumes of the comic series, focusing mostly on how the band got together in the first place. The third volume isn’t out yet but I reckon you’ll find the first two volumes in trade format all compiled. That’ll at least bring you up to speed with the groups’ current members in this series. Have fun watching as the legend unfolds my friends.

Campaign 3 has only recently started. You can absolutely start from there if you feel daunted by the number of episodes. However, it’s about a completely different party from Vox Machina, and it’s set in the future. So it may have some spoilers for LoVM. I suggest watching the animated show, and if you’re interested in more Vox Machina, watch starting episode 24. Personally, Campaign 1 is still my favorite, and I love VM. But if you don’t mind spoilers, you can absolutely start watching from Campaign 3.

I'd like to make an argument for campaign 2, actually. It starts off really strong, gives a great idea of what these guys are capable of, and, especially in the early episodes, they try to keep campaign 1 spoilers to a minimum. It also follows a new càst of characters, on another continent. And is an AMAZING story lol It is a ton of content though: I got through it by listening to a couple episodes a week while catching up (at least at first. It didn't take long until I was falling asleep to them 😂). Welcome to the family 👍

If you want to get into CR and you aren't sure about the time commitment, I recommend the podcast, as you can have that on in the background as you're doing other things: driving, cleaning, crafts. One tip also is to watch videos at 1.25x speed or even 1.5x speed. You get used to it pretty quick and don't seem to miss much, plus it really cuts down on the time it takes to watch an episode. If the live stream is what you want to dive into, there are several points at which to join, each with their own pros and cons. Campaign 3 is the most recent, and has (at the time of this comment) only 11 episodes, so catching up to live is not so daunting. Campaign 2 is completed, and is a very common place where people start. Campaign 1, Episode 1 is the very beginning, but the early episodes are maybe hard to get through as sound and technical issues crop up. You're also jumping in mid-adventure, as the group had been playing at home for a good 2 years before taking their game to the stream. Episode 25 of campaign 1 is often put forth as a good start point, and coincides with Episode 3 of the Legend of Vox Machina. You're jumping in then at the beginning of a new arc, so it's not quite as jarring. For me, it's hard to reconcile these other options, as I was someone who was on their live stream for the very first episode of Campaign 1, so I was there for all the hurdles. But there's also something special about seeing this group from their humble beginnings. There is another journey you get to witness apart from that of the characters in the story they tell, and that's the journey the cast undertakes themselves, as they put this very personal experience out on the internet with the full expectation that nobody will be interested and they'll slink back to relative anonymity. Little did they know how fast it would blow up, or how strong their bond with each other would grow through all of this. I feel privileged to have seen it all unfold in real time. So starting point is really a matter of personal preference, and how much time you can or are willing to commit. Want a cleaner, more polished product? Start with one of the later campaigns. Curious to see how this group of friends turned a hobby into a media empire? Start in campaign 1. And if you're really hard core, and want the full experience, start at the very beginning. It's where all good stories must begin.

There are three decent ways to start with Critical Role, each with pros and cons. 1. Episode 25 of Campaign 1. pro-It's the group of characters you'll know from Legend of Vox Machina. Con-You start with a fairly high level group, and depending on your ideas on spoilers, it could spoil season 2. 2. Campaign 2. Pros - Clean starting point Cons - different from Legend of Vox Machina. 3. Jump on with the new campaign that's only 10 episodes in. Pros-easiest to catch up on. cons: Some spoilery references to old campaigns and it's the least reserve if you're the type of person that likes to binge a large library. Happy to clarify if you have further questions. (And thanks for the fun reaction!)

I’m actually going to recommend campaign one to start with, especially after you get through the series you will see the origins of episode three and above. The first two are pre-stream Canaan that were brought to life. I think it’s somewhere around episode 26 or 27 of campaign one is a great place to start. Especially since they will have most of their audio issues fixed by them as they were not originally set up to stream. It was just a home game of DND that went viral.

I didn't think it was possible but Critical Role has managed, across all three campaigns (and their one mini-campaign), to not have a bad character imo as far as the player characters go. I identify more with characters from Campaign 2 and don't have as much experience with Campaign 1 (which this is based on), but it's really hard for me to choose someone I connect with because everyone is just so good. I think Vax and Keyleth are my favorites from what we've seen so far, with Grog and Pike definitely being up there as well. As a few folks have already said, Campaign 3 is only 11 episodes in so far (episode 12 will be airing next Thursday) so it's probably the best place to start off unless you want to dive into the commitment of the already completed Campaign 2 which has over 100 episodes. Campaign 1 I found rough because the streams start when they're already partway into their adventure (already level 9, and seasoned adventurers), on top of some technical difficulties and problems with a former cast member. Though I hear some people say starting off with Episode 24 is a good point as it starts the story arc that this series will cover. The wonderful thing is, of course, every campaign is fairly self-contained with a new party of characters and a new story - there will be references, nods, easter eggs, maybe even guest appearances as it all takes place in the same world just across a timeline, but it's not heavy enough to take away from anyone unfamiliar.

I finished the first 2 seasons so while I’m waiting for season 3 I’m watching Critical Role’s campaign 1 The Legend of Vox Machina. I was intimidated by the length of the series and the video’s themselves, cause these are like 3-4 hour long videos, but they keep my attention easily. I don’t even play them in the background, I just sit down and watch the videos when I got the time to spare. So far I’m on episode 6, so I’ve watched over 10 hours of content at this point. It’s only taken me 2 days to reach that point, but I have a lot of free time. The videos are so much fun that it doesn’t even feel like I’m sitting there for hours.

Lovely to see people who hasn't gotten into Critical Role watch this show and get into it that way :D As for where to start? I was kinda scared to, but started from Campaign 1, Episode 1. I can tell you however that the only thing in common between each campaign is that they're set in the same world, and you don't need to have watched one to see the other campaigns, so the third one would be a recommended start as there are only a few episodes out, if not, some of their one-shot games could be good too! Hope you get a good start into the Critical Role fandom, and a great reaction to a great show ^_^

I was also intimidated by the sheer volume of Critical Role, and I actually started with the Briarwood Arc (approximately episodes 26-38 of campaign one), which is what most of this season was adapted from. I looked up descriptions of each "chapter" of the 1st campaign, and that one seemed like the most self-contained. Forty-eleven hours of content and two campaigns later, I have no regrets, but even if you don't end up watching the whole thing, those 12-ish episodes offer a solid story on their own.

For people new to Critical Role Campaign 2 or 3 are great places to start now, starting with 1 is a bit hard as they started streaming when the game was already going for a while so you're thrown a bit into the middle of it and the streaming quality (audio etc.) isn't quiet what it is now. I have a thing I personally always recommend to people that just want to see if it's for them though and that is watching episodes 18 + 19 of campaign 1 (Trial of the Take part 1 and 2), it's part of Vox Machina who you now know from the series already and they split up (so it's only part of the cast) and instead had some guests come in (Mary actually is the Voice director for the show now and Felicia the one who gave them the offer to stream their game in the first place) and those 2 episodes have imho a good mix of what to expect from the sessions overall but also are a little "mini story" in itself, so it's not as much of a time commitment to check out if you want to see if it's for you. (It's also set before the current series, so no spoilers in case people are worried about those)

I stumbled on to Critical Roll when they were partway into Campaign 2 and I jumped back to start from the beginning. There are so many good RP moments that it's hard to say where to start. I think it's all great content. You also have the people at Viva La Dirt League who have a DND campaign going and their episodes are much shorter. That might be a good jumping in campaign to get a feel fro DND if you can't sink in the hundreds of hours to watch Critical Roll.

I blasted through all the episodes by listening to the podcast while working, driving, cleaning, etc. Then I'd check the streams on youtube later so I could see their faces during the best parts. On most of the episodes, there's a comment by a guy named Flando with a bunch of time stamps, like the old scene selection screen on DVDs. The comments don't start until part way through the first campaign though. Also, don't use headphones for at least the first 10 episodes, the audio has sudden glitches sometimes. Things start getting a little rocky with one of the players as the campaign progresses. It's mostly behind the scenes, and the problem is resolved in episode 27, but it makes some scenes a little hard to watch up until that point. You can start at 27, but you'll be missing the beginning of the Briarwood arc that's depicted in the cartoon. My suggestion is to start at episode 24 (which is episode 3 of the cartoon) or episode 17 (18-21 introduce beloved guest characters). The early episodes are great despite all this though, I just felt it was worth mentioning that the rough patches get ironed out quickly. The audio issues kept me from the show for a while, but it's worth pushing through.

You can't really go wrong with where you start with Critical Role. You can catch up on the current campaign (the third) pretty quickly. Then you can watch the first two at your own pace. They all take place in the same world, but on (mostly) different continents with some years between them and follow a different group of adventurers each time. There are references to the other campaigns and some returning NPCs but nothing that should hinder your understanding along the way. I personally have a deep love of The Mighty Nein (Campaign 2) but still love Vox Machina a lot as well. If you have any questions, the Internet is happy to provide answers. As we Critters say, BIDET! And welcome! :)

How to get into critical role: I recommend either starting with the beginning (or potentially end own the show is fully out) or starting with Campaign 3. Campaign 3 will have some spoilers for Campaign 1 but the more major spoilers are already kinda predictable with watch is out of the show. How to get into Dnd: find a game, online or in person, r/lfg is where I found mine. Most game tables are happy to introduce new players. If you play online you don't have to really worry about the math because the platform your DM chooses to use will likely do the math for you. Also if you don't like the game confirm it is not that you just don't like your table or DM before giving up on the game entirely, not every table is great for everybody.

Best way to get into it is to just dive in! I looked into Critical Role only May of last year.. a couple months after my friends got me to try D&D for the first time.. I actually started, kind of confused at first, with the Vox Machina campaign.. confused because I had only heard of The Mighty Nien until then.. but once I started, it was worth it.. ... probably cheesy sentiment, but oh well. ^_^

If you find it easy to get into comic books, then the Critical Role comic series might be a place to start. It basically tells the history of the characters and the group from before they started streaming their campaign. As for the stream itself, obviously campaign 3 would be the easiest place to start as the episodes are long and it's only around 10 episodes in, but if the sheer amount of content isn't intimidating for you, campaign 1 (which the animated series is based on) and campaign 2 are both well worth watching/listening to. Also, you mentioned that you enjoy behind the scenes content...there are a series of 6 videos on Critical Role's channel that go behind the scenes of the animated series, which are also well worth checking out. Another fun series to watch is Narrative Telephone, which the Critical Role crew started as a bit of fun when the global issue put a temporary hold on the game.

Critical Role, while intimidating, is very easy to get started with. I went with the advice of Ginny Di. I started with Campaign 2 because you get to start from a fresh campaign and meet the characters as they meet each other. Take it slow. There is a lot of content but once its gone its gone and you will wish you had more. Trust. Tell yourself to watch an hour at a time. That way each episode is like 4 episodes. You can binge 2 hours, or an entire episode (4 hours). Up to you. Again I suggest taking it slow. I would even suggest slowing it down by watching the episode of Talks Machina that follows each episode. Talks was an after show that would bring on 2 players to talk about what happened in the episode and give some backstory to it all. Doing so will add to the content. I didnt do this until I started running out of content. Wish I did from the start because they have some great conversations. If you get through C2 and love it then that makes C1 easier to get into which as more issues form the start. The show was brand new so the production value is much lower than C2 and the current C3. As well they had one extra player that was a bad vibe on set and you can see it more as episodes go on until he is finally just removed from the cast. Lastly, the campaign had also been started from a home game so the episode 1 started with the team having already been in a group and fighting together for some time.

I recommend starting with C2 since C1 takes a while to get off its feet, but if you watch one C1 episode and nothing else, choose a cycle of Vengeance. It's short, and everybody absolutely shines, by far the best of CR

Honestly start where you want. I saw someone suggest starting right before this arc around ep 24 or something? To experience the long form version of this story. Campaign 2 is good. It's complete and self-contained. And has one of the most epic moments in dnd history. Cupcakes, amirite critters? Campaign 3 started recently so you could get caught up without too much trouble and be watching live with the rest of the critters if you want. Some light spoilers for c1 in both c2 & 3 but they come sooner in c3.

You probably won't see this since the video was upload a long time ago but you ask about how to start critical role and dungeon and dragons and I don't see comments about the later part. I would recommand the "Starter Kit" or "Initial Kit" from D&D. They are for beginner and give you evetything you need to play. The adventures are quite cool. The difference or that the first one is more "classic" (goblin, trolls,...) and go through level 1 to 5. You have character written for you and the adventure. The second is a little more broad + go through level 1 to 7 and you can create your character. They are a lot of help on youtube, reddit,... if you are affraid. I hope you will enjoy it ^^

If you have an interest in checking out Critical Role I would recommend starting with their current campaign, Campaign 3. They about 11 episodes in. I started playing D&D about 4-5 years ago and over the past couple years I've heard my friends discuss Critical Role but I was so far behind I didn't know where to start. Luckily their latest campaign started a couple months ago and I jumped in with that. All new characters and adventures and I've been having a blast. If you want to start watching, I'd suggest starting with campaign 3 episode 1. If you catch up to the latest recording (episode 11 as of this comment), then start watching campaign 2 from the start. After finishing that and by this point you absolutely love CR, then go back and watch campaign 1. When they first started out on Geek and Sundry in campaign 1 they had nowhere near the quality and production value they have now so it's a little rough to get into the show by starting at the very beginning. There've also done a lot of great one-shot episodes either unrelated or side-related to the main campaigns which are great too. There may be some inside jokes and references you might not get by watching the campaigns backwards like this, but overall the order shouldn't matter too much. Then after ALL that, rewatch the animated show because there have already been a ton of great Easter eggs from all of Critical Role tossed in!

For me, Percy and Vex are my faves, with Vax coming up as a close second. I’d tell you why those two are my faves, but spoilers. I think you’ll start to know why by the third episode Percy is a favorite among the Critter fandom. As for watching Critical role, if you want to start with the original, I would begin with the Briarwood arch, it’s where the group seemed to really take off. However, I would say it might just be best to start with their current campaign ( campaign 3) as they are only 11 episodes in and it might be less daunting to catch up.

My suggestion to get into Critial Role is to start with Campaign 2 and just listen while youre doing something mundane like cleaning. The episodes are long. Dont worry about that. Truly you will finish them all and wish you had more. So take them slow. I say campaign 2 because its the first full campaign. Vox Machina/C1 started after the group have known each other a long time. C2/Mighty Nein is the first campaign to start from the day the character meet. And my favorite campaign as well. And one that amazon has announced a series for in the future. C1 is a great season but it has some early audio issues as well the exit of an early cast member. As well Ashley is gone a lot for her job so we miss out on Pike quite a lot. C2 is when Critical Role is known but really really lifts off and becomes a huge thing. Imo that campaign is simply the best. 👌

Honestly, I watched a few episodes of campaign 1, enough to get a feel for the cast and get a basic sense of the setting, but I really got into campaign 2. As great as Vox Machina is, I just fell in love with the Mighty Nein even more. VM is, IMO, a much more classic D&D party of misfit mercinaries-turned-heroes, whereas MN are much more outcasts that remain at the margins of society and in the shadows yet still save the day. Both are great, but I really appreciated the complexity and darker themes that MN seemed to have. Hell, 5 out of the 7 members of MN start out with criminal histories ... and that doesn't include the sailor and the carnie. Also, Caleb and Jester are my favorite Critical Role characters to date, and really allowed Liam and Laura to showcase their amazing acting chops.

To get into Critical Roll the live play, I say start with the current campaign. If you are not able to spend four to five hours per episode sitting and watching it, I recommend the podcast or just headphones while you cook and clean. When you catch up make Thursday Night a thing with friends. I watch it with some friends on a zoom call. Also, be nice to yourselves depending on where you live it can get very late. If you just can't make it past the break that's ok. more CR for you. To get into D&D, you can start on the D&D discord or the D&D beyond discord. I am not kidding you can find online games to play all of the time. you will have to weed out the overly pushy DM's for pay who don't follow the rules, (personally I don't believe they can be good enough to get paid if they can't follow rules) It can be intimidating. It might be helpful for you to know that Pike is a cleric (they say 'holy person' in this show). In d&d clerics are healers and magic users who get their power from their deity, but they don't have to be priests. And Pike is the type that specializes in battle. In Critical Roll she was always wielding a mace. Her deity, the Everlight, is kind of a forgotten goddess and so there are no temples or organized clergy dedicated to her anymore. No one taught Pike how to act like an actual priest. Also, blessing a house the way the woman was asking for isn't really something clerics can do in d&d. The thing at the end where she couldn't heal the kid isn't because of a problem connecting to her goddess, but just an indication that she was drained and needed to rest. In d&d spell casters can only cast a certain number of spells per day. If she hadn't needed to heal Grog, she would have been able to save the kid.

Personally I prefer starting with the beginning of campaign one, Vox Machina of course. Some will say to start around episode 27, but I still think it's good to start from the very beginning of streaming. There's some audio problems in the beginning and a little bit of confusion since there's a character that is not in the series, and it starts in the middle of a game they were already playing rather than starting from some sort of beginning, but I think you miss a lot of great stuff if you skip all that. Of course, the only problem there is that you should probably finish the Legend Of Vox Machina first as it will spoil some stuff. But there's also enough stuff changed that it won't be a "We already know what happens". C2 does have a better start from the beginning of the campaign set up and is also really good, though I still prefer C1 as it's more a classic D&D party. And C2 does go to great lengths to separate itself from C1 early on that you can watch it without worrying about being spoiled for what happens on the animated series.
