The Legend of Zelda series is pretty much as old as I am, so it's been around in some capacity for my entire life. But let's take a look at the entire series in the order that I played them throughout my life. There will be some that I've never played and I feel like I have a complicated history with the series as a whole. Join me on this personal retrospective adventure. It's dangerous to go alone, take this video.
Intro by Joshua C. Griffin
Gameplay from: World of Longplays, LongplayArchive, ZeldaCentral, BeardBear

Interesting to hear your personal experiences. I have different ones, and that’s what makes life interesting. The only zeldas I don’t really like are breath of the wild and i haven’t finished tears yet but seeming pretty similar. I was 7 years old when majoras mask came out and it’s the most important game in my life. A beloved family member left it to me when they passed that same year and asked me to beat it for them because they wouldn’t have the chance. They were half way through but because of the time reset I had no idea. Figuring it out at 7 was near impossible but after months of work almost every day after school I did it, and it was the perfect game to teach me about loss and moving on, even if there were a lot of tears. Now it just makes me feel connected to my past in the best way.

Love the new format! Didn’t expect this video to be so melancholic :( It is a sad thing to realize that something you used to love just isn’t for you anymore. Recently for me I’ve come to realize that the Pokémon I grew up with is just not coming back. I can have some fun with the new games but I hit that same wall that you hit in the Wind Waker when I was playing Violet when I asked myself “Why am I playing this?” But I can pick up any Pokémon game from my childhood and play it for hours.

This was a very cool retrospective. The Oracle games were my introduction into Zelda and I love them a lot. I remember getting stuck in Oracle of Seasons because my Gameboy's sound died a few months back and I couldn't complete the Subrosan dance minigame to proceed with the plot. I've also played Link's Awakening and A Link to the Past and enjoyed those. I got Majora's Mask on the 3DS but haven't completed it yet. Overall, I only like the Oracle Zelda games and that's probably because of nostalgia. I don't consider myself a fan of the series. I definitely get the feeling of not being as in to videogames as you get older. The last game I was having a real blast with was Persona 5. I got up early on days I had to work to milk a little more time with it and I really hate getting up early. I still enjoy playing videogames as a hobby but I do not get the same high I did when I was a kid. It's a little sad to think about.

Honestly, while my history with the franchise is very different from yours, I have reached a similar conclusion. Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask were among my favorite games for so long, I easily would have called Zelda among my favorite franchises without even thinking about it. But... most of the other games I have played are only okay. Even games like Breathe of the Wild, which I do love, I never completed. It's a weird feeling, but I totally get where you are coming from.

I feel this video. I'm at the beginning of my thirties (well, 31) and while I don't feel like my love for videogames is letting up (rather, I find many of them to be very introspective experiences in all kinds of ways) Zelda in particular is a series I have checked in my mind as "liking it a lot", but when I really think about it, I have most of them half-finished or never played. I genuinely think myself a Windwaker fan rather than a Zelda fan as a whole because I do really love Windwaker, but many of the things I love about it are very specific to that game. Also, that tidbit about Twilight Princess being flipped on Wii to accomodate right-handed people. I love and hate that fact, because it's so emblematic of my feelings of the Wii era. I'm left-handed by necessity (a bit complicated, but in short, I can barely control my right hand, much less do it precisely) so when Nintendo suddenly wanted me to do more with it than just move my thumb a little, I really thought that was it for my gaming experience. I straight up could not play Twilight Princess until the Wii U, because we only had the Wii version with its motion controls only restriction.

The Zelda series is so varied in terms of tone and gameplay that even a lot of die-hard fans dislike a good portion of the mainline games. Personally, I didn’t care much for Twilight Princess and Skyward Sword. I would encourage you to play Breath of the Wild, as I think it’s the first 3D Zelda game to embrace the feeling of freedom and exploration of the 2D games.

You should definitely try a link between worlds because of how you talk about liking link to the past. A link between worlds is basically like a remastered/remake of link to the past but more modernized feeling and it’s different with Mechanics especially the way you get items that makes it feel fresh, so you’d probably enjoy playing it. And if you do play breath of wild and tears of the kingdom, I definitely recommend playing them in the order They came out because for me personally it’s really hard to go back to breath of the wild after playing tears of the kingdom.

You absolutely do not need to play Breath of the Wild to play TOTK. It doesn’t feel like a sequel in the traditional sense in a lot of ways, and feels like more of a successor. In fact, playing TOTK without having tried BOTW might be the best way to experience the game. That way you get the fresh & novel experience of exploring switch’s Hyrule for the first time, plus also get the refinements that TOTK brings.

I was introduced to Zelda series with a link to the past and links awakening. And I didn’t play all the later games so 2d Zelda is what I played most as a kid on my gameboy. I later played windwaker, twilight princes, ocarina, etc but the 2d games were always my favorites. I loved breath of the wild but it’s not what I want from Zelda personally and I didn’t even play the sequel cause it seemed like more the same but some added building fun

Great vid, and I agree with you on a lot. Started on NES version at my cousin's house when I was probably 10. Then Link to the Past, on my own SNES, this is what really got me into gaming, such a fun experience. Of course we move on to the 64 with Ocarina of Time, everything has already been said about this game, I couldn't add more. One for the ages. That is when I began to fall off Legend of Zelda Games. I did buy Majora's Mask, but wasn't a big fan. Great idea and all, it just didn't click with me. Next was Windwaker, which I did enjoy, but to this day don't really anything memorable about it except I didn't mind the art style and liked exploring the ocean. That's pretty much where I stopped. My friend got Twilight Princess, but I wasn't a fan of the movement controller. I never bought a Wii, and this was where I left Link for a time. Fast forward years later, I did buy a Switch for myself and daughter to enjoy when Pokémon Sword and Shield released. Got Breath of the Wild eventually, wanting to help out Link and Zelda again...and was not into at all. Just a huge step away from what I had grown up with. I don't see why so many claim this is "the greatest game ever made". I could barely get a few hours past the tutorial plateau, just felt empty and boring. "You can go anywhere and explore!" Okay, explore and find either a shrine, korok seed, or some weapon that will break after some use. Regret buying and have no plans to try Tears of the Kingdom. I did recently buy Skyward Sword remastered for Switch with toggle for just button control, no movement needed, and I have been enjoying it greatly. Feels very true to me how the games of the past felt for me. I hope eventually they go back to the formula I enjoyed, but might seem unlikely. Will have to wait and see.

If you are throwing out chronology and just want to play what’s fun, I would highly recommend just jumping into Tears of the Kingdom. Don’t even worry about BotW. You won’t be missing anything necessary to enjoy the gameplay or story. The only bad things to say about it are the parts of the map and mechanics that are too similar to BotW, but you’re in a unique position to avoid that entirely. I think it can reignite some lost love for the world of Zelda

The order I played them was: - Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2 in 1998 - Ocarina of Time in 1999 - Majora's Mask in 2000 - Link's Awakening in 2001 or 2002 - A Link to the Past in 2003 or later - Wind Waker shortly before or shortly after A Link to the Past - Oracle of Ages either shortly before or shortly after Wind Waker; I never played Seasons - The GameCube version of Twilight Princess in...I wanna say 2009? Played it on the Wii since our GameCube was physically kaputski. - Literally no others ever since For me, discussing lore and game design of the series is more fun than actually playing it. Same with Pokemon, actually. Jabu Jabu's Belly is actually one of my favorite parts of Ocarina of Time, due to the gross inside a living body aesthetic; this is just something weird about me that's always been there. Was my favorite thing in a lot of cartoons too, seeing the (inaccurate) ways that the gastrointestinal tract would be depicted. Water Temple is another one I love for its chillingly empty and calm atmosphere and its puzzles, and then the Shadow Temple for being spooky and morbid.

Of these, my favorites to _play_ were Zelda 2 and Link's Awakening (after unlocking the Roc's Feather) followed by Majora's Mask. In Majora I just found it a lot of fun to run around as the different Link forms or casually wear the Keaton Mask because it's a cute fox.
@RoninCatholic

I never finished Majora's Mask (beat Woodfall and Snowhead temples, never even made it to Great Bay temple because I never beat the pirate fortress to rescue Mikau's babies). Never finished Wind Waker (lost momentum and interest right after finishing Dragon Roost). Never finished Oracle of Ages (got stuck on the Goron Dance minigame, unable to pass the hard version of it needed to get a key needed for the Crown Dungeon, I think it was, the one where you need to get into it in both parts of the timeline). Never finished Twilight Princess. I beat the Sand Temple and gave up before making it to the Snow Mansion - couldn't catch a Reekfish. I hated Midna anyway and found her the most insufferable sidekick/partner I'd ever been saddled with in a game period.

34:09 Huh, it's really funny that your complaints about Link's Awakening mimic a lot of the feelings I had about Link to the Past when I first played it (after having already played through OoT, MM, and TP). It always felt so annoying to get from place to place, with enemies littered all over the world that constantly respawn, and it just didn't feel very rewarding. Just like your brother, when I inevitably got stuck at one point, I just didn't care to keep playing; it just wasn't fun. On the other hand, I LOVE Link's Awakening, because the world felt a lot.. "smaller", more condensed. It didn't take forever to get from one side of the map to the other, like it felt to me in Link to the Past. It just felt much more concise, a more structured experience. I also enjoyed Oracle of Ages and Seasons, which are just like Awakening to me, but.. more lol

I would imagine it's just because there are 3 levels, and 4 doors leading outwards on almost every level, plus a door that leads inwards (to the central pillar). If you don't remember which doors you've already checked (which can easily happen to a child who simply isn't paying attention and just wants to get to the action), you might end up wandering for ages, before finding the right order in which to traverse. Also for me, I really hate using the hookshot underwater against the clams; it's really finnicky with whether or not you can land the hit, and if it misses, that's another chunk of damage to you. They really flood this place (pun intended) with those kinds of enemies, including 3 of them in a booby trap room. Shadow Temple has an incredible atmosphere to it though; that's probably what carries it for me. The boat ride with the skeletons is such a memorable moment in the dungeon, not to mention the guillotines everywhere, the spinning blades, the creepy hands thing, and just the generally horrific vibe of the place stands out a lot to me. Plus coming off the heels of the Bottom of the Well mini-dungeon gives it bonus points, as it mostly continues that eerie vibe. I also loved the hover boots as a kid for some reason, but I can see why people hate the ice physics lol.

@@mikeclark7026 I don’t get this, they’re basically entirely the same with how they are different from the others in the series. If anything TOTK is even further from other Zelda games in terms of some of its conventions.

i really think that forcing yourself into release order kinda hampered your fun and burned you out. I mean despite using the challenge to play games you havent before, you played 2 games you basically memorized, and 3 almost identical games (i personally love LA:DX but to each their own. Havent played oracle but honestly you saying they are like LA kinda made me want to play them). I think you may have had a better time if you skipped over the games you had already played. For me personally, i rarely replay games and tend to hop around the series a bit. Personally just play what seems fun at the time. You shouldnt see them as a obligation (beyond like the obligations for your youtube channel)

Link Between Worlds is really good, a fun homage to LttP but not an essential experience. Skyward Sword is such a letdown, what a tedious slog... skip it if you feel like you can, but the dungeons are something to look forward to if you feel like you need to play it. BotW is a masterpiece, which you have to play before TotK, which is even better so far.

@@Paraspectre Honestly, when botw came out was soooo so good, magical! It's close to the best, if not the best game I've ever played. The climbing, the parasail, the world, it was all ground breaking when the game debuted, I dumped 100s of hours into it, looooved it. Totk is like botw on steroids but almost exactly the same game play. So I was like, this is fun but I've already done this. The excitement, the magic, the curiosity didn't last long. So it made me think, if I'd played totk before botw I would of had that same feeling X3!!

But yeah Zelda is a good series, but it's not as good as everyone makes it out to be. I've played 1, 2, ALttP, OoT, Wind Waker, every handheld zelda, every ds and 3ds zelda, Skyward Sword, and BotW. Honestly, I found the handheld zeldas more enjoyable than the console ones. Didn't like Skyward Sword at all, and there were a couple handheld games I disliked because they felt like shoe-ins instead of a real game. BotW just didn't do anything for me at all, it was too empty and didn't give me the feel of a Zelda game.
