During the Spanish civil war, from 1936 to 1939 the family of Carmen Amaya entertained us at dances that were held in New York, to raise funds for the Republic. I was 6 and 7 years old, and I was enthralled on the way she danced..I have never forgotten, they are great memories.

In Spain we call it "tener duende", a passion, a magic born from the depths of your gut. Very few people have it. Carmen Amaya did it. Check Camaron de la Isla for more "duende".

My dad use to drink and party with his friends in garage. They brought guitars and played Spanish music. Us daughters danced street flamenco to the music. It was very empowering though we didn't know proper flamenco, poor and no afford classes, just basics from the heart much soul. No one questioned it. After we would all eat homemade cheese enchiladas and pepsi. Good memories in hard times you make it good with what you have.

@@RoyalViking465 , many Mexicans are descendants of Spaniards who colonized the America's among other land's . Many of the colonizers brought their families from Spain and settled on land that was given to them by the Spanish crown directly . Flamenco is Gypsy and gypsies are from India who traveled in caravans throughout the entire world . Many never settled until recent years in many countries. The influence is of the dance is unique to each dance , but the instruments are the same . Castanets , shoes and hands . The lyrics are poems or a meaningful story the bring about the feeling of struggle , sorrow and triumphs . Enchiladas are different in every country , but unique to each region . Everyone claims the dish , but no one really knows where it came from. You should see a Guatemalan enchilada , lol. It looks like a tostada , but not a Mexican one. So , you see no one . Although everyone claims the name , the dish it illegitimate and belongs to none.

@@daniaa.oliva-pena7338 First of all, flamenco is the result of the mixture of four cultures: Christian, Sephardic, Arab and gypsy. The Gypsies arrived in Spain in the 15th century...so to pretend that flamenco is a dance of all the Gypsies in the world is nonsense. Gypsies are found all over Europe, but, the gypsy music of Hungary has nothing to do with Flamenco, for example. The same can be said of any other European gypsy dance. The conquerors did not bring flamenco to America, at that time, flamenco was in formation. Flamenco. Flamenco was formed in the 19th century. Whether or not the enchiladas are from Mexico, I don't really give a damn, but it definitely has NOTHING TO DO WITH FLAMENCO. What is a reality is that Mexicans believe that, in some way, everything belongs to them... directly or indirectly. Really overwhelming people!

I saw Carmen Amaya in New York at the Chateau Madrid somewhere around 1956 or '57. She was the most powerful "presence" I've ever seen on a stage; it was difficult to breath at times. I've always thought she must have been in her early 70's. What a shock to see she died at age 50. Edith Piaf, who was the second greatest performer I've ever seen, looked almost as old the second time I saw her, shortly before she died, and she was only 47. Truly great talent often exacts a great price.

I bought the VHS from the documentary director for $50, a fabulous sum at the time. Our annual Fiesta is starting next week and the only reason I still have a VHS player is to watch this film as a warm up for our week of gluttonous gorging on flamenco dance and music.

This is exactly what i feel, when i listen to flamenco. Energy, passion, mystique! I love, how she is not trying hard to dance in a seductive way - i have this feeling, that when i see women dance, they often tend to rely on their looks and emphasize them to seduce us rather than seduce us with dancing itself. This just feels so pure and authentic.

1:07 This is so similar to the now famous African dance known as "impossible dance" called Zaouli Dance. On a side note, as a child living in Rio in the 1960s, I had the supreme privilege of seeing don Antonio Ruiz Soler dance at the Municipal Theater several times, since my father bought seats for every presentation, year after year. They eventually became 'friends' when my dad managed to infiltrate the backstage early on, and he and someone else whom I'll never remember, came for dinner in our house (it was a momentous event for my dad who went all out making sure it was perfect), three or fourr times and in one of those nights, quite by chance, we discovered don Antoinio and I were born on the same day of the year; November 4!

"In 1952 she married guitarist Juan Antonio Agüero, a member of her troupe. A man belonging to a distinguished family from Santander, who was not a gypsy. They lived an authentic love story and celebrated an intimate wedding." (from wikipedia)

Never heard of Sabicas. They musicians all leave the stage in a hurry, so I'm assuming the recording is sped up.

@@donnawoodford6641 "Never heard of Sabicas." If you like flamenco guitar, then please do youtube searches on "Sabicas". Everyone I know who seriously played flamenco guitar considers Sabicas unsurpassed, including Paco de Lucia. Sabicas produced about 30 LPs, some solo, some with other top flamenco artists. In the period from about 1940 to 1970 he essentially defined flamenco guitar.
