The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I was 12 years old (1976) when I first met Jose Greco. I was dancing flamenco at Poco Loco club in San Antonio TX. About ten years later, I would play my flamenco guitar for him at Club Ole in San Antonio TX during his special guest artist performances. I had recorded on cassette a castanets only dance with his wife on the Mike Douglas show. That was impressive to my childhood memory.

Jose and his partner Nana Lorca came to my high school, Cleveland Heights, in 1978 to perform at special assemblies for my class of '78, as well as the class of 1979.

A few years before this, when I was 4 years old, my parents took me to see Jose Greco and his dancers. I was so in love with the whole show!

When I was 8, my aunt introduced me to Jose and flamenco. I couldn't see him, only listen, mesmerized by his tapping heels- the adults talked and drank, I lay on the floor, chin in hands, eyes closed, imagining being in a red flamenco dress, waiting for Jose to extend his hand, a castinet in mine. One of my 1st loves! R.I.P. Aunt Anne and Jose Greco. "Well I never been to Spain, but I kinda like the music, say the ladies are "insane" there, but they sure know how to use it..." Three Dog Night. Namaste from Canada. Te Quiero...

Trust me this was the twerk of the day. The Church, the Conservatives and the Progressives of Spain have been trying to get Flamenco banned for a hundred years. It is Romani, gypsy, nasty, regressive, backward, associated with crime and drugs. Familiar?

It's interesting, Nana Lorca did not strike me as a great dancer or performer, but their chemistry together was magic and she came alive as she came close to him. No wonder they were lovers, completing each other.

What's on Jose's "bolero" jacket- they look like metal castinets, bells?! I became a hippie partly because one of the values was the appropriation of other nationalities clothing, especially that of the poorer people, and the historic- what would be called The National Costume Of...My grandmother said, NOT IN A RACIST WAY, "You all look like Gypsies" to me, then and now, a GREAT COMPLIMENT- I wear boring jeans and typical "G" tee shirts- but I have 3 closets, and 4 dressers full of vintage, "Gypsy", feather boas, an Ostrich feather jacket, peach colored from 1925, meant as a bed jacket but I wore it every day once- my gran won it! She was poor and the antithesis of such an item- she didn't get breakfast in bed! She was up, early, working hard to care for my grandfather, my mom and my aunt- but when she saw "a hippie" for the first time, she wrapped it up and mailed it to me. I treasure it. I now know how cruel is the industry that produces such frivolity but I won't sell it and I can't be buried in it as I'd like because I am being cremated and wouldn't burn such a treasure- Namaste Especially to the real hippies left- there are still "cracks", pockets of people, who shine- the good values survive in say, those who forage in the woods for many nutrious plants and mushrooms-

Flamenco and some aspects of belly dance actually come from the Romani people, although you'd hardly know it from media depictions...
