Are you familiar with a brand called TCL? You might recognize them as the cheap TV brand but they’re a lot bigger than just that. In fact, they just overtook LG to become the second-largest TV maker in the world, only beaten by Samsung. And the way things are looking, it’s very possible that TCL will overtake Samsung as well within the next decade. What makes this feat even more impressive is that TCL didn’t even enter the North American TV market till 2013, yet they’ve somehow already risen to the very top thanks to their unique approach. You see, TCL was never trying to be a cheap TV brand like Vizio or Insignia. Rather, their goal was always to make Samsung and Sony quality TVs, just for cheaper. The reason this was possible was because TCL was actually Samsung’s supplier before they launched their own brand. So they already had the experience and infrastructure required to put together market-leading TVs. This video explains the explosive rise of TCL and how it went from a no-name brand to the market leader within just 10 years.

I used to sell TVs at Walmart, and TCL/Vizio were top sellers, which accurately reflected the budget buyers at the store. Side-by-side, looking hard enough, TCL and Hisense were inferior to Samsung and LG, but the TCL/Hisense had unbeatable prices. To start out, TCL had good enough TVs at very attractive prices. Not too cheap and not too expensive. Now, TCL has the scale and the technology to go big and bring top-tier technology at Samsung, LG, and Sony's level. A major factor to TCL's insane growth is that the Chinese government/provincial governments were known to provide cheap loans to promote industrial production. Building new factories and equipping them is a highly capital intensive. TCL effectively had unlimited loans in their ascendancy, so TCL could lose money without consequences to gain market share until they can compete at Samsung or LG's level.

What percentage of the TCL tvs carried the Roku OS? I bet it's a pretty high number. Also, Chris Larson (the TCL executive mentioned in the video) moved over to Roku a while ago.

@@jensenraylight8011 Similar quality and lifespan with super low prices. Then, it's possible. Scaling up manufacturing to that make sub-$100 MSRP 85-Inch TVs would be insane. TCL durability 15.000 hours, If you use your TV for 3 hours every day you can be sure that it will be damaged within 10 years if there is no electricity problem. I bought a TCL series 4 4k 55" TV (Android version) and use it as a monitor. Works great. The only thing I hate is the Remote they have like no buttons/functionality. As far as the TV I actually bought 2 of them the same day as Best Buy had a sale and they were only $250... how can ya go wrong with that deal. I put the other one in my bedroom. The only other complaint is that the Wifi drops the connection more than it should. So the negatives for me are the remote and the Wifi as far as the image I think its great. It would be better if Windows had less problems with scaling issues for apps/programs

First time bought a P series in 2019. Wich is the cheap, entry level series. In Romania, they are quite new on the market. But i gambled. And i won. Now, i bought a second one, but this time it's a top notch C845. Wow. With a bit of tuning, i'm geting close to oled black, but at half the price. Not to mention i bought to pair it with PS5. It has all the goodies : miniled qled, 4k, 144hz, ALLM, VRR, 240hz game boost, Game master, dolby atmos and vision, HDR10+, 2000 nits brightness. the 55" model has 376 local dimming zones. The top 85" version has 976. So, no backlight bleeding&shit. This is the best bang for the buck.

TCL was never an unknown brand for me. I remember my older brother and my dad bring a massive black TCL CRT TV in the early 2000's. It looked massive for its time and worked with no issues. The only issue was that the remote was pretty fragile and had to be replaced every few years. In the early 2010's when my brother got married he got the CRT as a hand me down and we got a new LCD TV. Even then, the TV kept working for years. Probably 15+ years. So the TCL TV brand was a good brand to me even though I didn't know anyone else with the same brand of TV. I can only imagine that they got better with their TVs!

I bought a sony bravia in 2013 for about $2500. It suddenly wouldn't turn on in 2020 and the repair center said there would be no timetable for when it would be fixed since it's an old model and they had to scavenge their warehouse for a model similar to it for parts and it was the start of the pandemic lockdowns. I bought a similarly sized $400 TCL without expectation since I was on a budget. 4 years on, it's still up and running and my sony ended up getting junked because they couldn't find any parts.

I came from well known TV brands like my old Toshiba Plasma, Samsung LED. Unfortunately the Samsung TV from 2015 stopped powering on so I had to pickup another TV. I was skeptical about Chinese brands like Hisense and TCL. So I started following reviews on the TCL QM8 from various YTubers I follow. Not seeing the TV in person but impressed with the price, reviews and how close the QM8 was compared to previous years OLEDs I pulled the trigger last August and still amazed on how the TV performs. Although it’s not an exact match for the ultra detailed black levels, motion clarity and specular highlights like typical OLEDs, the high brightness levels, not having to baby-sit the TV to avoid burn and lower costs per size of the TV in was my selling point. There are some cons such as the QM8 UI is not ultra snappy like my Samsung or ATV. It takes a bit for the UI to be fully loaded and functional. Which is pretty disappointing for TCL’s flagship line. Seems as if the software updates have been slowing things down compared to day one of ownership. Overall it was a good bargain.

It's not that Vizio had bad quality per se, they have poor support and poor software. My 2021 PQX looks phenomenal still but they literally broke some features and made it unstable and still have failed to fix it with a software update. Their biggest mistake was trying to compete with the higher end tvs lik OLED. They forget half the value on the higher end is support and features, they go together. I got a 2019 Samsung Q80R QLED that retails at $1,500 and I got it at a used TV store for $800 and I love everything about this TV. I don't think I'll ever get another brand of TV again but TCL might be my second choice. I really just wanted this TV so I could play games in 4K

TCL is going to take a huge loss. Their Roku embedded TV is getting a huge backlash. Apparently, Roku just updated their terms and conditions where you have to agree to not sue them if they have done you wrong. If you do not agree, then your TV becomes disabled. You can't even change the hdmi port. Basically, they hold your TV hostage. It is an extremely shameful act from Roku. Unfortunately, I have TLC from 3 years ago, and I can't even return it. Now, it has become an expensive paper paperweight.

@@TheAbinn Ehhh... a lot of their screens suffer from vignetting. Their OLEDs have ultra-extreme ABL dimming. Their newest series have buzzy, shrill, inductors of poor quality that sound like the TV is dying all the time. They're stuck on 2 HDMI 2.1 inputs because they refuse to produce their own SoCs and instead use garbage MediaTek chipsets which are slow, have insufficient RAM for Google TV, and are limited in HDMI bandwidth. They're, no doubt, the king of color science, but they're far from the king of screens overall.

The only problem with a TCL/Hisense is that it's an extremely good panel but the upscaling is not even close to what a samsung or sony offers. Native content plays great but since there isn't a lot of native high resolution content available, so since you are relying on upscaling for watching sports/live tv or watching content via netflix which is known to notoriously save bandwidth by streaming at 1440p to 4K screens and its very rare that you get a true 4K signal which is again not even close to bluray quality, so low bitrate native content. which is why you need to think your usecase and content consumption habits to know what kind of stuff you are looking for, going for a samsung means even 720p will look good on 4K panel, but 720p will look like 720p on a TCL/Hisense with close to no upscaling

I think you’re on to something, the extra magic that makes a good looking image is the video processing ASIC, whether it’s upscaling or adjusting colors, contrast, black levels on the fly. I have a 1080 Sony from 2008 and the image/color it presents is quite good. Maybe it could be better in the area of shadow detail, but it’s much better than cheap 4k tvs. And also not crushing whites.

Sony also uses Samsung OLED panels for their high-end models like the A95K and A95L. These models are superior to Samsung's models that use the same panels, as they have a better processor, better heatsink on the back of the screen to cool and extend the lifespan of the panel, and they license Dolby Vision so you can watch the highest quality HDR content. Samsung still doesn't license Dolby Vision and most titles don't have HDR10+, so you're almost always limited to standard HDR on Samsung TVs. I believe most reviewers rate the Sony XR-77A95L as the absolute best TV currently available.

On topic, last summer we bought a new home and I had to get a cheapo TV for the second living room. I was targeting 42 - 50 inch Android based TV for as cheap as possible. I ended up with a QLED 58 inch TCL, the image is amazing, it's full of features and I prefer it to my other TV that I paid 3x as much a year before 😖. Its only downside is that its SoC is probably a bit too slow or does not have enough RAM so some apps are not as responsive on it. Still, this is an amazing product.

TCL uses Roku OS, the one that LG uses, the software update will be up to Roku but I don't think it will be a problem. I also have an older Sony TV and the Android TV OS on them was absolutely atrocious, it's so much less responsive than what's on LG and TCL. Plus nowadays you really only need the TV OS for audio/visual configuration, a Chromecast or Apple TV unit will be better for media consumption.

@@ishkapiska4516 Actually better than most. Like I stated I have 2 of them. With the TV wired to the PC I have a full surround setup with the Dolby App so I use that instead of the TV speakers. In the Bedroom where I have the second TV I use the TV speakers and have no issues at all. It has different Presets that are actually decent. The six presets are Voice, Standard, Music, Movie, Dynamic, Live and the TV also supports Dolby and DTS surround. The speakers are Back Firing but they do not sound tinny with all highs... The Bass is Okay, not great but not horrible. With newer Movies a lot of people complain they can not hear the dialogue and I find I do not have such an issue with this model... I have had that issue with other TVs. Basically, you do NOT need a sound bar with the TV but it would enhance the sound.
