Strange and Sinister

Күн бұрын

In this video, I explore the historic Graceland cemetery in Chicago and showcase stunning monuments and fascinating graves with haunted legends. I visit the creepy Eternal Silence monument for pioneer Dexter Graves and delve into the legends of the mysterious statue designed by Lorado Taft. I wander over to the mysterious grave of Inez Clarke, a unique monument with a fascinating marble statue and ghost story behind it.
I showcase the massive monuments for the Palmer and Kimball family’s. I also visit the mysterious underground mausoleum for Ludwig Wolff and tell the scary story of Ludwig’s fear and the ghost sighting that occurred there.
Graceland cemetery in Chicago, often referred to as the cemetery of architects, was established in 1860 and serves as the second burial site for many people who were moved there from the old city cemetery. Many of the people buried in the cemetery are famous Chicago figures from the nineteenth century. The cemetery also has scary ghost stories and legends surrounding some of its most popular monuments.

I had a friend I attended the American Academy of Art with in Chicago, who told me she had been exploring Graceland Cemetery and had stopped in front of a grave, just for a second and was compelled to to move away. A few seconds later a huge branch from a tree crashed exactly where she had just been standing.

I have visited Graceland many times....like I have told friends, Graceland is oozing with art, history, and atmosphere. There is a great small book published by the Chicago chapter of AIA entitled, "A Walk Through Graceland Cemetery". It features about 12 of the most prominent monuments of Graceland.

My grandfather is buried here. I grew up 5 blocks from the cemetery. We used to have to pass by the statue of death, every time we had to visit my grandfather's tombstone, it was really creepy. I couldn't even look at it. I had no idea the cemetery was considered haunted until after I moved away 20 years ago.

The statue is definitely creepy and really stands out among the other graves in that section. I think the green color makes it look more sinister. Apparently the cemetery used to polish it to restore the bronze color.

The two cemeteries you have described in Chicago are fascinating, and lovely. The monuments are spectacular, an incredible story could be written for each one, besides the true stories about them. If I ever get to Chicago this is the place to visit. Thank you for this beautiful tour.

Wow. Goes to show you that the truth and independent media have always been a threat to those in power. God bless Victor Lawson and his family, who lived in obvious fear of the ones who didn't want his news articles to be released. And God bless those in independent media today, who still face the same fate. ❤

Yes, I went with my friend about a year or so ago and we were looking at all the monuments etc. As we were by some of the tombs that are in a row kind of under the ground we heard some creepy screaming. Then as we were going back to the car this woman popped up, kind of young looking had on some clothes that looked like from the 70's maybe and she just stared at us. We walked quickly to the car and then when we looked for her as we were driving around, she was nowhere to be found. Probably just someone from the area but, it freaked us out because yes you could hide behind a tomb stone, but she came out of nowhere and then disappeared basically. We still talk about it to this day. It is a beautiful cemetery though.

Please add to your list the lake and mausoleum of __ Goodman, for whom the Goodman theater is named. I believe he loved sailing and transitioned as a young man. I heard that his casket was on a boat in that pond, to be entombed at that pond-level entrance. Also, how about Ludwig Mies Van Der Rohe, who brought the Bauhaus to Chicago following the rise of Hitler. And Ernie Banks, Hall of Fame hitter for the Cubs. Louis Sullivan, famed architect and mentor of Frank Lloyd Wright, the Sullivan mausoleum being on the National Historical Register. All the Marshall Field family, beloved by Chicagoans, but also responsible for the hanging of the anarchists, proven innocent of the Haymarket massacre. The McCormick family, which I believe includes Cyrus, inventor of the Reaper. I believe the same family went on to own the Chicago Tribune. There's also a row of graves, where the mother and 3 children were killed in the Iroquois Theater fire, and the father who transitioned 3 months later... of a broken heart. So many more! Thank you for the tour of a history lesson in a park.
