Bro, imagine having the sense to give up the throne but having the charisma to having it handed right back. The nobility really placed a lot of faith in Baldwin

Its a more stable replacement of him being dying from his illness rather than appointing a new KING, when people were in favor of Baldwin (his illness was hidden from the public). ITS just a political move and that's iT.

You should read about the succession crisis That took place in the final years of baldwins life and the immediate years after of his death, It’s got all the political backstabbing you could want. The nobles may not have wanted Baldwin to leave but they definitely did not want Guy to succeed him.

A year ago i when i was 17 i learned about the Achievements of Baldwin the IV and said to myself this great men when he was the same age as me achieved so much while i was wasting my time doing nothing with myself. Then i realised if this men went to battle with leprosy and commanded so much respect i have no excuses why i can't get up early and go work out and improme myself everyday. Truly an inspiration.

Everyone saying the nobility showed their loyalty to Baldwin by refusing to let him abdicate should consider how advantageous it was for the nobility to 1. Have a crippled and bedridden liege and 2. Kick his inevitable succession crisis down the road for however long they could
@isaacpham1311 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was what I was thinking. Doesn't make for as good a narrative though
@kecukraftwork1988 Жыл бұрын
I agree that procrastinating the crisis was largely their goal. However, there undoubtedly was some loyalty present. No nobility would want to defend the post of a useless royal member, unless said uselessness was a distinct political advantage, either towards themselves or against their enemies. Despite his affliction, Baldwin was far from useless, and so they had no such advantage to leverage. Therefore they kept in there - in greater or lesser part - *because* he was effective in his role, and hence they were loyal to both his cause and his leadership.
@lolihitler4198 Жыл бұрын
@Bimla Singh The nobility had a vast array of rights and privileges but also many obligations and it was the king’s duty to make sure the nobility did not act in a way that violated those rights and obligations. If the king was too sick to rule the nobility effectively had no oversight and could run amok doing as they please. As for the succession crisis with no clear heir Baldwin’s vassals would each have their own favored candidate based on their political goals and if more than one candidate made a bid for the throne civil war was all but guaranteed. Civil war means peasants not working their fields, sacking and looting across the entire kingdom, and a military and economic weakness that could last a generation. A civil war was not only bad for the kingdom it was bad for the nobility themselves as it would be their lands being looted by their rivals and their peasants dying for little gain not to mention the executions and seizing of lands that the losing side would inevitably face. But because there was no way of preventing a succession crisis due to Baldwin’s condition all the nobility could do is bolster their readiness for war and buy as much time as possible to ready themselves. Hope this cleared up what I was getting at

The video is mostly right, but this at 0:35 is a HUGE mistake. Baldwin IV was, indeed, the second and youngest son of King Amalric, but he was not, by any possible means, the younger brother of Baldwin III, since Baldwin III was actually Amalric's older brother (in shorter words, Baldwin III was the paternal uncle of Baldwin IV). Baldwin's older sister was Sibylla, future Queen of Jerusalem after her brother's untimely death in 1185, and her own son's (Baldwin V) in 1186.

Mycobacterium leprae is so slow-growing, manifesting the characteristic skin lesions can take so long (most mycobacterium skin infections carry uniquely painless ulcers). To have carried the stigma of disease with dignity and faith, inspiring warriors who would likely be disgusted by you, all while having to be a king and military strategist, is a remarkable testament to Baldwin IV's sheer force of will and devotion to Christ. I think he’s my favorite king bc he’s kind and generous and punished the evil. I think he’s from Christianity, if I were there and have the power of transportation and get the medicine he will not be in agony. But he will still have his disfigurement 😢😢😢

Does anyone know if the image on the right is accurate as to what the knights and soldiers of Jerusalem would have worn over their armor? The white with gold cross of Jerusalem

He must have been an inspiration for marvels Dr. Doom. Even though history tells us, he was a good guy.

Is it just me or does King Baldwin look a LOT like Varre from Elden Ring. I wonder if Baldwin was an inspiration for Varre’s design
