It's worth noting that a lot of Native Americans have French surnames. Dubois, Pappan, Lafayette, etc because of the influence of French fur traders in the 1600-1800s. @@TianaCorin Its quite easy to know why they are named like these. Purebloods are old wizarding families and we know (Thanks to the beedle the bard book) That in the middle ages the old pureblood/wizard families were ostracized by the muggles. Im mostly certain that in the distant past the lestrange family members were called "Les étranges" (the weird ones) by the people and after time it became "Lestrange" just how we know that the POTTER surname was created because of a corruption of the word potterer (Linfred of Stinchcombe was nicknamed potterer and after time the family surname was potter)

I would argue that there were magicals in the LeStrange family for 2 generations prior to Corvus and Cyril but they are shown as the start because, if I recall, "pureblood" is considered at least 2 previous generations were magical. Thus, Corvus and Cyril would have then been the first "purebloods" in that family after losing the status by being descended from squibs. Additionally, as Martha was a squib, it would explain the lack of Parseltongue ability as it is a magical ability that I would doubt you would pass along if you yourself are not magical.
@a.r11384
@a.r11384 2 жыл бұрын
Who’s to say Corvus and Cyril didn’t just start lying about their pure bloodedness. As for rules, that go back to 2 generations prior, we have seen through HP books that people can just lie about their blood status so perhaps the Le’stanges just started lying about their blood status and continued marrying other ‘pure bloods to keep it going
@nightleopard13
@nightleopard13 2 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't you still be pureblood if you came from two fully magical families? Think about it: a squib might not be able to do magic, but Martha would still be a half-blood and we're only told that the ASSUMPTION is that squibs have a muggle parent. So her grandkids could technically be purebloods even if they're all squibs, it'd just be an embarrassing thing to talk about. Also remember, Neville's family thought he was a squib and we know both of his parents were magical, which means you don't need muggle blood to BE a squib.
@a.r11384
@a.r11384 2 жыл бұрын
@@nightleopard13 unless magical ability gets passed down through genes then you would need your squib or muggle parents to at least have the carrier genes. like hermionie's parents could be carrier but as far as I know, JK never fully explained how magical abilities pop up amongst squibs or muggle borns. SCB should do a theory video on this
@nightleopard13
@nightleopard13 2 жыл бұрын
@@a.r11384 I agree. I suspect it's genetic due to Newt Scamander's comment to Jacob about how Jacob's muggle physiology makes him more prone to physical damage. (Also diseases don't appear to pass between muggles and wizarding kind; plus both have completely separate genetic conditions) This implies magical beings (wizards/witches) are a distinct subspecies to humans and that speciation was prevented by a reoccurence of interbreeding due to wizarding kinds general lack of fecundity. Meaning, wizard's produce less children resulting in bloodlines dying off and thus a smaller genetic pool. So, they breed with muggles to prevent "Gaunts". *sorry I have a MA in biological anthropology, so I study genetics/evolution for fun.
@lisam3837
@lisam3837 2 жыл бұрын
I like this better because, usually I can follow most if not all of SCB's theories but not having magical kids for a century? That seems like a long time, even if it could be 2-3 generations. I just feel like the odds, if there is any, is much higher for two magical parents starting out, even if they are squibs (i believe they have the carrier genes btw no proof but yeah)

Actually the thing of magic "genes" aren't studied at all, i mean, in the books is presented like there is no such thing and any pair of muggles can just give birth to a wizard just like 2 wizards can give birth a squib, but maybe there's more than that.
@SJ-wk7js
@SJ-wk7js 2 жыл бұрын
Isn’t the idea that for squibs the magic genes are there just turned off (likely due to epigenetics), so all muggle borns are descendants of wizards just a mutation occurred that reactivated the magic genes.
@robertgronewold3326
@robertgronewold3326 2 жыл бұрын
@@SJ-wk7js Well, the way genes like that work is not mutation, but two genes meeting again. Say if you look at people who have very rare genetic conditions, such as dwarfism. What happens is that the the two people who have met and reproduced are in fact related. Usually it's not close, and many people are not aware of it, but just imagine that a couple have the same great, great, great, great grandmother, quite a distantly removed relative, and the dormant gene then gets two copies which make it a dominant gene. So most muggleborns would very likely have a squib ancestor, possibly the same ancestor in some cases, and the gene resurfaces and you end up with a wizard.
@katmaresparkles9578
@katmaresparkles9578 2 жыл бұрын
If Martha married another squib then they are more likely to produce a magical child. However if the reason for the squibdom has a magical cause to it then the magic gene will continue to remain recessive, however it will make sure that it is passed on, until the magical cause has run its course, so that it can then become dominant again. Although the same thing may happen if the reason for the squibdom is from anomalies associated with inbreeding. I think you should make a series of videos about genetics in the magical world.

Well there is a bit more to the distinction of crows and ravens than size. Ravens tent to be larger yes but also have fan shaped tails as opposed to crows that are typically more flat tipped. Ravens are also capable of unpowered flight or gliding/souring at least much more easily than crows which have to use powered flight to stay airborne. That is crows have more trouble flying if they arent also flapping. Relative beak size, throat plumage. Very similar birds but distinct. More or less differences depending on the specific corvid species

I'm not sure the "oldness" of a family is more than a simple pissing contest. Wizards with knowledge of the Muggle world have an insane potential of gain huge fortunes. Not to mention, proving them wrong once their name was established, would be pretty hard.

Just look at the Black family tree and others. They don't strecth back that far. I was thinking that too. Same goes for the canon etymology of it being “le strange,” when strange in French is “etrange”. One way it could work though, would be if they took up Estrange as the last name while in the Americas. Then when they went back to France, or interacting with the French in the Americas, were referenced to as a family as “the Estranges” -> la famille Estrange / L’Estranges. @OriginalIPMan You meant "éloigné", I guess... because "éloingé" doesn't exist in French. And no, it doesn't mean "estranged". The term you picked is only used in a sense that comes close to estrangement when used in verbal form. As in "s'éloigner de sa famille ". When people become estranged from one another the wording used would be something like "ils sont comme des étrangers à présent " or "ils se comportent comme des étrangers ".

Umm. There definitely are physical differences between Crows and Ravens other than their size. They're of the same genus, but not the same species. It's like saying that zebra's and horses are the same thing. Their wing feathers are different, their tails are different, their neck feathers are different, their beaks and beak feathers are different. They make vastly different noises. Crows are generally found in large packs while Ravens are typically only found in packs of 3-4.

I really like how this theory sounds! But I’m still unsure about the parseltongue heritance thing. If the ability jumps the only other magical child of Isolt Syre because she is a squib, how do we know how it passes on. For all we know it could be in the blood…just activated by the magical ability. So therefore I would say all the magical Lestranges could or should be able to speak parseltongue, but they don’t. I mean yes your theory would explain the lack of the ability, but we need more information of the inheritance of the ability to say for sure.

Interesting theory. Perhaps when the Fantastic Beasts movies finish we'll know more. I've thought the LeStrange Family came from France possibly with the Malfoys and William the Conquerer. They seem more varied. Leta is very different from Rodolphus. Many of them were darker than the Malfoys.

I decided to look up a timeline of happengs IRL that could be a reason for the info before that time. I kid you not 1729 - 1735 Charles Wesley and John Wesley (one letter off but close enough for a Dyslexic) began the Methodism movement in England. While it's got nothing to do with the fictional Wesley's from the pottervers it's such an odd connection when I'm looking up stuff that could have effected the wizarding world in that year.

Going further back to the 12th and 13th Century, you can find a Lestrange beheading, in battle, the Last King of Wales, a Llwellyn...whom you might remember from a Ward in St Mungo's... The circumstances in history, and stories/legends from then, about Llwellyn and Lestrange, hint at wizardry. Llwellyn is in my family line, thus my study. Was very shocked to see Lestrange impacting my family history. Lestrange ended the Royalty of Wales.

Theory in a nutshell: Isolt Sayre founded Illvermony, was a heir of Slytherin, had a squib kid, who married another squib, the squid pair estranged themselves from the Wizarding World, as took a last name of Lestrange. there kids were also squibs until Corvus and his brother, Corvus moved to England, specifically France, adopted a Wizarding kid and was like "our magical gene was lost for century, we must never let it happen again. YOU MY CHILD WILL ONLY MARRY A PUREBLOOD" and the Lestranges' couldn't speak parsletoung cuz Isolt's Squib kid couldn't.The brother remained in America and Mary (credence's HORRID adopted mother) was a American Lestrange squib which explains her hatred towards magic and how she knows breaking a wand is breaking a witch/wizard's power.

I have another video idea that goes with all this "Heir of Slytherin" stuff. How did the Slytherin line (Gaunts) make their gold? Dumbledore said they had once been wealthy until they squandered it. Did they inherit money or did their use their parseltongue gift to sell snake parts(scales, venom/antivenom, fangs) for profit? Must be easy to get your hands on that stuff if you can speak to snakes.

This does tie in with the Acadian geneaology very well. During the expulsion of the Acadians by the British many Acadians moved into the woods and lived amongst the Mik'mak. The Acadians were French settlers and there is a list of the first familieis that read awfully similiar to the list of 28. And yeah that timing is pretty much right on.
