Same for me. It was back in the early 50’s and my mother loved him too. I remember watching it as a 5 or 6 YO child on a small screen B&W TV. I was intrigued by the candelabra and thought they were lit candles. Sometimes you really do not appreciate things until they are gone. Thank goodness for these video memories of Lee and other great entertainers from that era.

I remember watching Liberace at my grandmother's when I was three years old. The curtains would open and someone would sort of act out the song. I remember "A Bicycle Built For Two" and a woman sitting on the piano singing something. The other people just seemed to appear out of nowhere and then just disappear. So long ago now but when I see this I'm a little girl visiting my grandmother again. I didn't know there were any copies of his show anywhere.

I never missed watching and loving his sunday evening show in the 1950s when I was a child. He was a child prodigy and a genius on the piano. He could have been a great classical pianist but he wanted to be a flamboyant entertainer instead, and he possibly made a lot more money as a entertainer. I loved his genius way back then and still do to this day. Gone but not forgotten. His musical genius will never die.

This is so unique in a dozen (at least) ways. I've seen dozens of Liberace videos, but the idea of him publicly and so gleefully helping two bashful kids (boy and girl) break the ice, being a gay artist, touches on psychology issues (particularly gay psychology) I've often wondered about. For example, does such a person observe heterosexual attraction the same way heterosexuals do? Does it take a very high level of generosity (which Liberace obviously has) to be supportive and non-spiteful (in my experience many gay people can become very catty and sabotaging or spiteful in such situations). Is he implicitly saying "This sort of thing isn't for me, but I'm nothing but happy for a boy and girl loving each other"? One thing seems clear: his homosexuality seems to be tacitly accepted by all concerned, and he shows a kind of aunt-like (not avuncular, openly effeminate) solicitude that the adults seem to tacitly understand, acknowledge, and accept, including himself. This seems to be the moral code that era operated by. People could be pretty openly gay, with an understanding applying across all genders and orientations, that sexuality itself is an entirely private matter, so many of the differences become far less relevant. A very different era, very different cultural norms.
