The Liberal Conundrum: Whose Democracy is it Anyway?
Elections and liberal institutions need not always go hand-in-hand. Institutions can wither without public accountability. Equally, an assault on the legitimacy of elections and popular mandates can lead to the decay of democratic nations. Electoral autocracy, a term made popular by a section of the commentariat, is as persuasive and yet as feckless as anarchic mobilisations.
Is the liberal elite criticism of supposed institutional decay fundamentally undemocratic? Is the rise in populism globally a threat to democracy, or is it instead an indication of its strength and resilience? Is there any one model of functional democracy, or are there ways in which the emerging world challenges Eurocentric conceptions of democratic functioning?

@@IndiaTides well thats debatable. I dont agree or disagree. But what I want to say is it is for the mass to decide whom to elect and should not be hijacked by the elites where they consider there opinion should matter the most despite the election results. Understand that the majority may not be always right according to some but it is the soul of democracy to respect the majority no matter what the minority thinks is correct or not. Note: Majority and minority in terms of voter outcome only not otherwise.

Worse!! These European nations call themselves democratic but are sending arms & money to Ukraine that their citizens reject!! In fact, the German Foreign minister said that she doesn't care for voters & she will arm Ukraine at any cost!! Further, if they are such great democracies, WHY are they not conducting a referendum to ask people if they want a war with Russia??!! The irony was when the French had rejected the European constitution in a referendum; that decision was never respected by the elites!!!

One way to look at how democracy in India is in danger is the decision on farm laws. 5% of farmers made govt repel farm laws. This is not democracy

@@archieus7752 I think you are absolutely right. I don’t know the right places to look. But worse than that, I don’t understand the ideological positions of the things which I do read. For example, I know what to expect from American sources like MSNBC, CNN or FOX. I am familiar with the role each plays in the American Political Ecosystem. But when I look through an Al Jazeera article, listen to a BBC podcast, or watch a DW video, I don’t know anything about the source of my information. Like one of the panelists said in this video, BBC should be labeled as State Run media, but it rarely is. Without a familiarity with the source of the information, I cannot consume it responsibly

Sanyal starts off by saying, "Liberal democracy used to be about whether elections are held ... so on and so forth..." No mention about rule of law, independence of institutions (media, judiciary, ...), consultative mechanisms, respect for dissent. Maybe he comes around to it later on. These institutions are fundamental for any form of government to qualify as liberal. He should have mentioned these right at the start.

Democracy is more than just elections . Common person shud : -Have a say in policy making, -Question Government for ommissions and commissions -Question Institutions like ECI, Gov bodies etc Judiciary, Police, Security Agencies, ECI, CVC, CBI, ED, IT, regulators etc shud be independent and free from Government Control. Until these agencies remain under Gov control..Democracy is always under threat of Political agenda of ruling class

Democracy is about the people and their vote for a governing body to govern them. How about the faith or religion is important in their choice of the government which is very misleading. End of the war and colonial era in the 1940s meant a lot of countries got self governance, and socialism was the favorite refuge of those new governments. So the period ushered in a whole lot of governments with left leaning political values. They believed they stood for society at large, those political establishments are increasingly losing ground as more economically ambitious, nationalistic, conservative parties are coming to the fore. This is happenied in Brazil, India, Russia and many European countries. But those political parties that are rapidly becoming unpopular are unprepared and crying foul.
