#biologyanimation A moss is a member of the plant phylum Bryophyta. These plants, along with the liverworts (Hepatophyta) and hornworts (Anthocerophyta), lack well-developed vascular systems. For their lack of a distinctive kind of conducting cell-the tracheid-they are called nontracheophytes.
The life cycle of a moss, like all plants, is characterized by an alternation of generations. A diploid generation, called the sporophyte, follows a haploid generation, called the gametophyte, which is in turn followed by the next sporophyte generation.

Secondary protonema is a type of protonema that develops from any part of the gametophyte other than the spore. Protonema is a filamentous or thalloid structure that forms the first stage of the gametophyte in mosses and some liverworts. It grows from the spore and produces buds that develop into leafy gametophores, which are the mature gametophytes. Secondary protonema is similar to primary protonema in morphology and function, but it arises from vegetative reproduction rather than spore germination. For example, if a leaf, stem, or rhizoid of a gametophore is detached or injured, it can produce secondary protonema under favorable conditions of moisture. Secondary protonema can also give rise to new gametophores, thus increasing the population of the mosses.
