Look at the bottom of the first picture. The guys look like they are squatting over a water trough going to the bathroom.

That is because they were. The only stream was used both for drinking and septic. That is why nearly 13K soldiers died. Instead of building barracks they just made the prison larger. Their diet was Corn mush. Often it was not even cooked. They had no fruits or vegetables. They basically starved to death.
