Death was ashamed of himself, hating to have to kill beautiful things. All he wanted was friends and fun. The deer helped Death realize that nobody is angry at him, and that letting his friends move on is caring for them.

My kitty cat passed a month ago. I hope death was as gentle to her as it is depicted in this movie. I love you, Noki. ‘Til death did us part.

That moment when they hug I could feel the deer saying "thank you for everything"

Notice that towards the end, the rest of the pack leave, but Death's friend start to struggle to breath and stand. She knew what death was and knew it was her time. Those little details just make this story that much more beautiful and heart wrenching.

I watched again this 2024 to see if I cry again after many years, and yes is still the same feeling.

*It hurts watching someone you loved fade-away in your arms and thinking it was your fault that it happened*

The moral is: we should not fear death. We should live with it. When the time comes we should meet it with understanding.

Why, out of all the short movies that get all these awards, has this one never garnered any? I found this five years ago and I showed it to my kids. Now they request it. May they learn (as I have) that Death is an old friend!

I love how death isn't portrayed as malicious, but a curious being who just wants to explore and have a friend

Notice how all of the other animals lay down immediately and fell into slumber the moment Death touched them, but in the deer's case, at 3:40 it did not, as Death (I guess) himself don't accept it, but seeing the deer tolerating the pain, Death hugged it with acceptance and peace. Just a realization that made me cry even more.

Death loomed over her. Over the many years that it followed her she got closer and closer to it. Sleeping along side her, being with her while she ate, and watching over her family. Over time she grew old, weary, or sick. She knew it was time... As her family left the forest to graze she stopped. Pausing only for a moment and looked back to the death that had watched over her. She walked towards it calmly. She had lived her life; with understanding and trust she embraced death. The friend that would come for her and all that followed.

Its hard to believe that this video is already seven years old and its still being loved by people around the world❤

Sometimes the best animations, are the ones with no words, but only emotions to tell a story. Edit: and music.

In my opinion, the character of "Death" touches the animals not to kill them but because he wants to touch something, to play, to have an embrace. This is clearly evident when he touches the flower and it withers immediately, shocking him. So in the end, the deer chooses him to touch and give him the embrace he was seeking. It was time for her to die. This is apparent because the deer seems to tremble and not be well when the others depart. Very, very touching from every perspective.

People comment how this is very sad, but to me it is bittersweet. The doe lived a full, happy life, and death garnered some happiness in the same period. When it was time to go, the doe accepted its death, said goodbye, and went out on its own terms with someone(thing?) that cared for it. There was a life well lived, a death well had, and happiness shared. To me, that is bittersweet.

Because I remembered my faithful best friend, my dear dog Jesse, while he was sick and the damn doctor didn't see him, my best friend became heavenly. .And I couldn't do anything for him, I could only look, he was young, he was only six months old, he had a lot of time to live

In my freshman year of high school I wrote a story for an assignment that was heavily inspired by this animation.

When I first watched this (years ago), I was mad at the deer for hugging him, it was so sad and I kind of thought the deer was just stupid. Now I realize that the deer was old and tired. It could no longer follow it's herd and was ready for death. It knew what would happen if she touched her friend, but it was ready, and embraced it.

I can not watch this without crying its so beautiful no matter how many animated videos i watch this one is my favourite.

😔 Let's all take a moment to appreciate what death had to do to his friend the deer and what the brave deer had to do. This short film made me cry but it was also happy at times. I don't know if anyone noticed but the deer trembled weakly before going to death... I'm sure this deer new if they touched it would die. Death is immortal and the deer was not so it would have grown old so it may not have even been deaths touch that killed the poor thing it might have just been her/his time and would rather die in deaths arms..

This is so nostalgic, it reminds me my grandmas house in a huge neighborhood with beautiful flowers and mountains that we usually climb on. It also has a cute cat called Scott. I believe the deer died because it was at the end of its life. The deer went through seasons and in the spring, it had reached its limit. That's why it didn't go after the other deer, but turned back to embrace the inevitable. Death.

The deer knew it was her time even though death didn't want that.

I love how you made the Death so nice and gentle, shows how he doesnt mean to do harm to anyone, he just does what hes meant to. Even tho he makes the animals die, he does it as gently as he can. Also you can see how every single time he feels bad for the animals that die, but its just their destiny, its just time for them to go. And he learned about it later thanks to the deer he loved so much. He didnt want to hurt it, but it accepted that its time for it.
