Ozai serves as what Zuko could have become, had he chose to follow the wrong path and let his inferiority complex and envy consume him: Both are Fire Nation royals who were envious of their more talented siblings and had abusive fathers, constantly craving their approval and trying to surpass their more talented siblings. But Zuko eventually grew out of his envy and rose over his flaws, while Ozai let himself be consumed by his own envy to the point that he didn't care who he had to stomp in order to get what he wanted. For all Ozai's complaints about Zuko, he is the one who resembles him the most physically and in backstory: Ozai was the Zuko of his generation, a man with a massive inferiority complex against their more talented and favored sibling, but unlike Zuko, Ozai never grew out of that phase. Aside from Ursa's words and Zuko's "lack of spark(which he didn't lack, he was just a late bloomer.)" Ozai hates Zuko also because he is the one who resembles him the most physically and backstory, thus reminding him of how he was so "weak and disgusting" in his youth.

@thesuperframe4 жыл бұрын
I think Ozai was never meant to be a character in the same way that Zuko or Azula was, the Firelord was a means to an end, a reason for our hero to jump into action. In the episodes leading up to the finale, when Aang decides to kill the firelord or spare him, it isnt necessarily about the firelord and taking his life, its about aang's internal struggle in sacrificing his morality (to kill the firelord) in service of saving the world, Aang has to decide is taking one life necessary to save the world, in other words, the firelord isn't a character here but a vessel to tell us more about Aang and his morality, the choices he has to make, and the greater the conflict, the greater Aang's resolve.

@@thesuperframe I think this show is at its core, a "coming of age" story. It deals with serious themes, such as war, loss, responsibility etc., all of which compliment and enhance the show, aiding in making it great. However, it's really about young people finding themselves, while dealing with high stakes. Aang is coping with the huge responsibility of being the Avatar when he's just a playful kid, and Zuko is grappling with making the right choices due to pressures and presumed expectations from his father and the Fire Nation, causing conflicting loyalties. Katara is still coping with assuming big responsibilities, as she's had to after the loss of her mother. On a more finite basis (per an episode), Katara is coping with feelings of vengeance for the man that killed her mother, Sokka is coping with the insecurity and upset had for not being much help to Team Avatar, due to having no bending powers etc. The older people in the show have already found themselves - Uncle Iroh is an excellent example of this. He's old and as wise as wise can get. He's sure of himself. Sokka's sword teacher is sure of himself too, as is Aang's original fire-bending teacher, and circling back to the original topic of this conversation, Firelord Ozai is, as is General Zhai for that matter. Azula, the real main villain of the show, is also finding herself like the younger characters, hence her mental breakdown towards the end of the show. Mai and Ty Lee are of course, finding themselves too - It's all clearly there in the terrific episode, "The Beach", and they ultimately side with Zuko. Firelord Ozai having character development wouldn't have fit in with the "coming of age" story Avatar is telling as it wouldn't fit with the show's take. Him not having character development is also perfectly logical, considering he is an adult and knows how to get what he wants out of life now.

It is kind of funny and tragic at the same time how the bullying victim becomes the bully himself. Ursa calls Ozai a "small man" when he is behind bars, defeated and humiliated and without his bending while she had spent more than five years fearing even the sound of his name so much that she chose to erase everything related to him from her memory for a good while, including her own children because they were connected not only to Ozai and his manipulation and cruelty but also because she feared for them and she didn't want to feel guilty or worried for their fate so she chose to erase her memory till Zuko found her and changed her mind. Not that it isn't incredibly symbolic to show Ursa finally breaking the circle of fear and humiliation and face the man that ruined her life or see how gradually Ozai took all those blows till the final one where his wife his first actual victim got free from him but I cannot help it but notice this detail. Ozai was definitely not a small man. He wasn't some scared bully who was only big talk and no action. Yes he was a heartless man, most likely a clinical psychopath but he was always putting his words in action. Plus he did play with her all her life. Even the fact that he told her to leave so she couldn't poison him instead of killing her is another proof that he wanted to hurt her especially since she still loved another man and she was defying him trying to break the circle of his abuse and she wrote a false letter that even for a second damaged his ego. He said he was certain that Zuko was his son because he watched Ursa even before she was married to him but that servant saw the letter and even for one second he was considered humiliated in the eyes of that servant. So no unfortunately for everyone Ozai was not just a small man and he was capable of making his threats action. Also Ursa even if it was great for her to finally stop fearing Ozai, she did it while he was safely behind bars and without his power. I am not saying this is bad writing. Right the opposite. It is the most realistic thing that one who has been terrified their entire life manage to break through that after the subject that causes them terror is rather weakened or defeated or dying. Another reason of some amazing facts of this series.
@evanbao934 жыл бұрын
Actually, Ozai is a small man. He is a man who craves for everything that his father and brother has, yet can never get it. Azulon preferred Iroh and had no problem with killing Ozai's offsprings just to prove a point. Iroh admits he had seen Ozai be a sore loser whenever he loses to his older brother in a game of Pai Sho, implying that this has happened many times. Ozai always had the inferiority complex and he projects it on anyone he deems to be weaker than himself. That's why he's a bully. If you want to know Ozai's true character, look at his reaction when he encounters an enraged Avatar with the intent to kill him. He has no bravado or even the blood-knight thrill of a challenge. He was scared like a child and flee like a coward. Underneath all of his scariness and firebending, he is just the personification of Prince Zuko's worst traits given human form.
@katerinaaqu4 жыл бұрын
@@evanbao93 Wanting something you cannot have is not a sign of being a small man. Imagine yourself want to go to university and study the thing you want and the laws of your state and your own fafter tell you "Absolutely not! Only your brother /sister can do that!" wouldn't you be angry too? Azulon was another abusive parent. That doesn't mean Ozai is a small man. A parent should never pick favorites yet alone in such a monstrous way. Once again Azulon preferring Iroh and wanting to kill Ozai's off springs to prove it doesn't make Ozai a small man. It only makes Azulon a horrible father and grandfather. Also if Ozai was really a small man he wouldn't have worked his butt off at firebending forms all his life. No matter what someone can say of Ozai and what a great psychopath he was, no one can blame him that he took things for granted. He worked for what he got (even if in the end it was his final scheme that gave him the throne). Azulon was as much of a scoundrel as Ozai was. That doesn't make him a small man. Being a sore loser once again is not a sign of someone being an old man is just signs that you have bad temper and bad character. Also Ozai appears to be a clinical psychopath and psychopaths are known for their sudden tantrums and irregular temper. Ozai loses it because in his mind failure is horrible no matter where it comes from (mentality Azula gets later). If Azula plays a friendly volleyball game like a life and death battle the same way Ozai thinks that losing anything humiliates him. Even if we take that someone has an inferiority complex that doesn't necessarily make them small. Like I said he did work to get what he wanted with all the means he had and at the same time started off a war against the known world by using everyone around him. There are many types of bullies and not all of them are harmless brats who are just peacocks without any mental strength to make their threats facts. So... Seeing a stronger opponent and try to run away from destruction makes you a small man? Azula ran away multiple times too when she knew that she had no chance of winning a battle. Facing Avatar to full avatar form was clear suicide and Ozai was neither a fool nor was suicidal. He ran around in circles trying to either avoid Aang completely or regroup and find a solution. Aang was running around a lot before (Combustion Man being only one of those times or even Ozai himself. He even locked himself into a stone till he managed to get to Avatar state) . The only act I would count as "small man" was when Ozai tried to strike Aang on the back but taking under consideration the "win or die" mentality of his, that again explains it. Running away was a sign that he found someone stronger than him so he got scared? Even if that is the case human instinct of self-preservation is one of the strongest around. We often see the usual "hero go forth even if it means their death" but let's face it the normal reaction is to get scared. The one I truly appreciate as perfectly brave is Zuko who did face his father and his sister and even the Avatar knowing full well that he had neither the Avatar's power nor the ultimate skill of his family at bending. Another act might as well be the fact that he sent assassins after his wife's previous love. Knowing though full well how much he wanted to hurt her we can tell why he did it. Plus let's face it the writers want to make him a villain in every way. "Small man" hints someone that is all big talk without actions. From what I saw Ozai was more than capable of doing what he was promising. A bad father? No doubt. A sore loser, psychopath without consciousness? Absolutely. Small man? No I don't think so from what I saw. Not as a total at least. In any case she said that to him only after he was completely harmless against her. Plus she even decided to erase the memory of her very children because they are connected to him. That doesn't make her much greater than what she accuses him of. Of course living years under fear and insecurity can change someone forever and scar them for life but still...

@@matthewmorrison2748 I personally am skeptical about that. As you said he nearly ruled 80 per cent of his world. He was a good schemer and commanded an army. Now what makes a man great or small is debatable. Would you call Hitler a small man? Around 80 per cent of Europe will say no. He was a madman? Absolutely. But what he promised he did. That's how I see Ozai. I can't call a "small man" someone who started a crusade of this size and didn't even cower to face the Avatar (even if he underestimated him) to get his purpose to be "small" because he seemed capable of making his threats into action. So yeah I am skeptical about that statement. As well as who and when they called him "small". Ursa called him that when he too had no more weapons to fight back but empty intimidation when he was stopped off his power and locked in a cell. That's why I kind of see this pattern here. Im getting Joffrey vibes from Ozai. The way he treats Ursa is pretty much the same as Joffrey and Sansa
@lasttoparty75704 жыл бұрын
True, but Joffrey was no arch-villain, he was too dumb to live.
@jorgebersabe2934 жыл бұрын
And curiously, both Ozai and Joffrey wanted the approval of their abusive and neglectful fathers. Both also share that at their core they are nothing more than small, insecure people who are so desperate to look big and powerful and with hearts so small that they never let anyone inside them, not even themselves.
