I was fortunate enough to have met Nichelle Nichols at a comic/sci-fi convention in LA and I could barely speak because it was HER. I stood there mouth agape for nearly five minutes, shaking and nearly in tears because of the impact Nichols had on a little Black nerd girl who loved sci-fi and fantasy. If you ever want to hear her tell the story about meeting Dr. King, there's an episode of Star Talk with Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson she is a guest on. I guarantee you will need a box of Kleenex afterwards. By the way, you totally forgot about Dr. Mae Jamison, the first Black woman in space. Jamison credits seeing the character of Lt. Uhura for developing her interest in space and science.
@seattlefloyd
@seattlefloyd 2 жыл бұрын
I was surprised the video didn't mention Dr. Mae Jemison, especially since Jemison is a personal friend of Nichols, and actually had a role on Star Trek: The Next Generation (the character "Lt. Jr. Grade Palmer," in the episode "Second Chances," S6E24), and was mentioned by name in Star Trek: Picard in the episode "Two of One" (S2E06). Funny anecdote: when she was Mission Specialist on the space shuttle Endeavor, she used to begin her shifts by contacting Mission Control in Houston and saying "Hailing frequencies open."

"We Are Stronger" A Poem by Steven F Gooden We're never as strong, as we are until we have to be. Never Do as much, unless the need we see. Only give our best, when we fail at mediocrity. We Love rather than hate when we admit we're one humanity. We always give more, when compassion moves our heart with unbridled generosity. We Become more of our potential when we are made to see, that clearly our minds can believe in unfathomable possibilities, while seizing every opportunity, here in lies one's destiny. More than our scars, higher than our stars, for in our flaws are what defines our features, they're uniquely ours, as human creatures. We can run faster than on our slowest day. Reason better, and thinking it through all the way, regardless which direction our emotions may sway. We can find our voice when speechless, our strong words with meekness and our Courage in weakness. Always patience not quickness. Silence for peace than loudness, quietness of fear, not hopeless, for time and effort are equally unbiased. We are more than the stories we're told, we're the one's we write, each page unfold. We are the sum of our Lies and truth, fantasy, fiction, faith, and myths, no matter how uncouth. These are what shape us, our lives lived is the proof. We can be more right than wrong. More just than judge. More godlike than unlike. Reflecting Sunlight in our darkest night. Providing refuge. Never more alive until we die within and begin again. If she's suffering from dementia, then she absolutely needs someone to help her. If her assistant was taking advantage of her, that says to me that she and her son didn't have a close relationship. However, there's nothing to say those people protesting her conservatorship have a better option for her. She's really not in a good spot either way. It's a shame. I watched Star Trek from the beginning. It was ground breaking that she was one of the main characters. I actually remember the kiss between her and William Shatner. That was an earth quake. Never, ever. . not even one time did I question the cast or think of them in terms of race. I only learned about this idiocy in the early to mid 1980s. It's quite crazy and a shameful part of history. I truly hope Nichelle finds the people in her life that truly love her and will look after her best interests. Nichelle Nichols also had a large influence on me. As I grew up in an Army family, I knew I was destined to enlist. While watching the original series as a teen, I realized Lt. Uhura's importance as the communications officer. That caused me to become a radio operator when I joined the Army. I may be the only white male who decided to emulate a black female character in the 1960s, but gender and color didn't matter. All that mattered was being able to be as valuable to my unit as she was to the Enterprise. May she live many more years. Thank you, Ms. Nichols, for giving me a direction in life.

Duke ain't too bad either. My heart leapt when she met Dr. King, then fell, then rose again as his words got through to her. Thank-you, Sir, you sure know how to tell a story. 👏👏👏 Spock: "Vulcan has no moon, Miss Uhura." Uhura: "I'm not surprised, Mr. Spock." 🤣 EDIT: I sent this before the awful turn at the end. God bless you, Nichelle.

My cousin was Judy Resnick we never met but she was a Jewish woman which is more that no one said anything about but that’s still more of a groundbreakers want to came to diversity. I am so happy that this woman has done so much amazing things for the world in America especially. And I am so sad that we lost her today she was my favorite member in Star Trek my mom was a big fan and worked at the Conventions with my dad. My mother even collected the Star Trek dolls they’re not even open. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing incredible story of the life of this magnificent woman. I grew up with Star Trek and always loved Nichelle Nichols because she was so fantastic so reading about the last decade of her life has been mortifying to say the least. She is currently in a conservatorship under her son’s care and lives near him in Arizona. He sold her house last August which some friends are saying was against her wishes. She was, however, in a questionable partnership with a man who claimed to be her manager for the last decade while her bank accounts became surprisingly empty and he secretly got her to sign a series of papers granting him rights over her finances, house, and even medical directives. Nichelle’s son and family have been in a legal battle with the man (Gilbert Bell) over her finances and his questionable ‘management’ of her career which will be going to trial this month (May 2022.) Her sister has set up a gofundme to apparently help with legal fees for the suit. I really hope you make a followup to this video on what has been happening because she brought so much joy to people yet her friends are saying they have not been able to see her for 2 years.

The same thing happened to Barry White and even ordinary people like my brother in law, who was a university professor in Coventry UK. He had a female friend who noticed that at age 59 he was starting to show signs of Alzheimer, so she tricked him into marrying her, then put him into a home for mental patients where he died four years later and she inherited all his money.

A couple of stories. One, my little "adopted" daughter (my daughter's best friend from school) was named after Nichelle Nichols. She's very proud of that fact (and I don't blame her). I had a friend working at a restaurant here in Houston who called me and said "I know you're a huge Star Trek fan, Nichelle Nichols is here having dinner." Ok, so I fan girled...(something I usually never do..) I wanted to meet her because she was the last of the living stars I hadn't met yet. When I got there, I asked her for the autograph and she introduced me to Mae Jemison, who was an astronaut that her Women in Motion organization had helped make it into the program. Both women gracious and beautiful. I cried when she passed away a month ago today.

As a second grader when Star Trek's first season came out, this was the coolest show ever made! In my innocence, I saw Lt. Uhura as a strong lady, and it didn't matter to me about race, since there were so many representations of other races included, it just seemed right for the future to be imagined in this way. It speaks for the times that the kiss between her and Kirk was portrayed as forced by mind control but the world didn't end after this so maybe some people's hearts were changed. I do hope justice is done on the heartless embezzler and she gets back what was stolen from her. Anyway, thank you for making these videos and doing all the research, I never would have known about her amazing life!

I think it was early 2019 when I met Nichelle, Kyle and her attorney at her home (Woodland Hills CA?). I then recorded her vocalizing "Also Spracht Zarathustra" from the film "2001" for a science fiction project I'm producing. The man mentioned in the video, Gilbert Bell, was I believe her manager previously. Bell introduced me to Kyle who introduced me to the attorney. The fee we arrived at for Nichelle's performance was respectful and appreciated. What was cool for me as a producer was to see Nichelle perform and want to "do it again damn it!" when it wasn't right! Feisty lady in her 80's...like my wife who designed the corsets for Nicole Kidman in the movie Moulin Rouge!

I don’t remember seeing color in the crew/actors I just remember the whole thing was different and just absolutely fascinating. I am now 66 and when I see videos/shows like this talking about how different the show was compared to anything else on TV at the time and especially the diverse crew. I’m amazed because I never color then as a kid watching the show, I just saw great stories and special effects along with everybody working together.

Dude. I have to tell you, I first got into your channel with the Ted Cassidy video. I grew up watching these classic shows you focus on when they were well into syndication on Nick at Nite with my dad. What gets me with all your videos, especially this one, is the gut-punch level realizations, and that's me as someone who prides themselves on having in my brain what my mom called a "vast storehouse of general and useless knowledge". When you say, "Wow," at the end of your videos? That is the feeling I'm referring to - that feeling when you learn something and want to share it with the world. MLK Jr. pleading with Nichelle and later the emotional conversation with Nichelle and Gene are breathtaking and empowering. The joy and sorrow, the blessings and the burdens. I love these essays and how they contribute to the growing appreciation I have for classic TV shows and movies and the creative people who made them. If there is anything I can do to help besides spreading the word, let me know...all I can say is, not to sound greedy: More, more, more!

A Human Ark Divine in our human spark. by Steven Gooden
