I think it was always meant to be a movie within a movie. When it was announced, Pixar said something along the lines of "Buzz Lightyear was meant to be a toy based off of a popular movie. We thought it was time we made that movie", so yeah. It was always meant to be fictional within the Pixar universe

The Lightyear movie is like the Woody's Roundup show in Toy Story, it's what the kids in-universe would watch. Then the toy companies made action figures based on the main character of this movie.

@@collinoliva2262 but the theory states that EVERY film takes place within the same timeline and if Lightyear is just a fictional film in the Toy Story universe, then who to say that Car is also a fictional film, or Up, or Monsters Inc.? Lightyear breaks the theory by being fictional in Toy Story

@@PatLund okay, I guess it is in the same universe as a fictional film. but again, that means you can say the same to literally all the films, if we're really going to treat Lightyear as a fictional film in the Pixar universe, then you can make excuse that EVERY pixar film besides the Toy Story series exists in the universe as a fictional film? this could mean they could make a Pixar film that breaks the Pixar timeline and the excuse being that it exists as a fictional film. It doesn't feel right and fits with what the Pixar Theory is about, that being that everything exists within the same timeline and if something is just a film in that universe, it could indicate that it's on its own timeline in a different universe.

I love that they presented one of the possibilities which is LITERALLY the premise of the movie that the creative team has confirmed multiple times, and the movie opens with a title card stating, as told by CinemaCon attendees.

When you think about that, this movie is who toy Buzz thinks he is. Everything he’s gone through, the people he loves, and the world he knew, was never real. The existential crisis and the trauma buzz had gone through internally must’ve been quite insane.

I could've sworn this was confirmed and thoroughly explained the same day the movie was announced, and I'm 90% sure it was explained again in an interview that same week where one of the creators said something along the lines of "I imagined what movie Andy saw that made him fall in love with the character of Buzz"

Welll there is the video game from toy story two and the cartoon series way back when were we saw that Andy does own all the episodes on tape so he probably got his love for Buzz there or from some other influence.

The toy character is clearly based on what was potentially supposed to be a trilogy, because the story of Buzz Lightyear continues via video games in subsequent movies.

@@SuperCarlinBrothers what if the period of the timeline where humans are actually on earth is misplaced in the Pixar timeline. The whole Buzz Lightyear thing could be right before the planet becomes too toxic and they end up sending people on that giant ship in Wall-E. I'm pretty sure I could be missing something but that's the only way it kind of fits my head. Is toy story would have to take place after the humans got back and then all the garbage and stuff would have had the history and all of that of Buzz Lightyear hence the toy. But then that doesn't really line up with why Cowboys were popular at first could be an entire trend like when they got back on Earth they did the whole like ranch or cowboy thing then started like building up their cities again cleaning that up and then went on to like the whole space age talking about going back out into space became the popular idea again.... I don't know maybe it fits that way but I think think that's like some wishful thinking on my part

They’ve confirmed that Lightyear is a movie in the Toy Story Universe that Andy saw that made him want a Buzz Lightyear toy in the first place. So the movie Lightyear does take place in the Pixar universe but it’s a movie in the movie universe that our characters can watch. Chris Evans even said that was the selling point for him when they offered him the role because he didn’t think anyone else should voice Buzz Lightyear besides Tim Allen. Lightyear will not break the Pixar theory

If this is the original movie that the toys are based on though, then it should have been Tim Allen voicing him. Chris Evans doing the voice only makes sense if it's an in-universe reboot. That's my head canon anyway. Star Command The Adventure Begins is the 90's movie that the original toys are based on. Plus, Lightyear looks too good for a 90's movie. lol

I saw a trailer that said something along the lines of "in YEAR Andy saw a movie that inspired him to buy a special toy. This is that movie." Plus the first two trailers haveBuzz say something about being marooned on "This Planet." It's not Earth - even for the movie. None of this rant makes sense at all.

I assume Buzz not returning after 4 years made them assume the mission failed, and created the toy in memorial for Buzz.

Don’t worry, it technically isn’t canon, it’s just a movie series within the Toy Story series that promoted Buzz Lightyear, just like the Woody show from Toy Story 2.

@@TrickyRover well generally when it comes to language, if everyone begins to say something in a different way that becomes the correct way to say something changing the language into a new version, it doesn't mean the other way isn't correct. it all depends on which variation of the language you choose to use much in the same way American English is different from British English or Canadian English. even English itself is made up from variations and parts of other languages. Being wrong is based on your perspective. By the way sorry for going this deep in a KZfaq comment, I just came from my English comprehensive and critical thinking class so I am still in that mindset.

I think Ben's confusion is the presumption that the film-within-a-film is somehow based on a true story. None of the press releases have indicated that.

My personal theory is that Buzz (in Lightyear) was an astronaut in a young adult-ish movie, which is essentially what we watch, and then it got adapted and remade years later into some form of in-universe TV Show, Buzz Lightyear Of Star Command-esque thing. Then, that got more popular and famous than the original, which made the toy line happen, hence Toy Story. Then, at the end of the movie, in some kind of End Credits Scene type thing, we see Andy leaving the cinema (theatre to all you Americans), and saying to his mum (mom to you Americans) "I want one of those! Please please please Mom!" or something, and that's why he gets the toy for his birthday off of his mum. Edit: Oh dang, I hadn't finished the video yet

First time seeing any of your videos here, love how in depth you go! I personally think the plot for Lightyear will parallel major plot points from the film, Interstellar. It would be a great twist ending if Buzz makes it back to Earth decades before the events of Toy Story and writes "science fiction" books inspired his journey through space and time. We can already see evidence of this with the overshot time/space jump in the newest trailer. Whatever it ends up being, I'm sure Pixar will knock it out of the park like they always do. I subbed, can't wait to watch the rest!

I'm fairly certain that the creators have specifically said that Lightyear is a fictional movie inside the Toy Story universe. I remember reading an interview where they said they were even going to avoid referencing Andy and the toys because it would take away from telling the story of Buzz Lightyear.

Random note: The director of Turning Red has stated that it takes place within the same universe as Toy Story. So that's at least one, absolutely, undeniably confirmed member of the Pixar Theory.

Okay, I'm glad I'm seeing everyone in the comments pointing out the actual premise of this movie. This is supposed to be the movie that Andy sees in 1995 that inspires him to buy the Buzz Lightyear toys. It doesn't have to fit in the overall Pixar Theory, only Toy Story does. Although, an argument could be made about how 1995 had animation this good.

I’m hoping for the movie within a movie storyline myself. I want it to either start off with Andy going to see the movie with his dad or waking out at the end and we see Andy and his dad. Then taking your theory on Andy’s father, that would possibly the last thing or one of the last things they did together, which is why Buzz is so important to Andy and means so much, it represents a good last memory with his dad. I know your theory says that Andy got Woody from his dad, so I feel like this would be a good explanation as to why Buzz “took over” that role in Andy’s heart and mind

It's been confirmed multiple times, and I don't understand how this is a difficult concept to understand. This is a movie that Andy watched that got him into Buzz Light-year and why he became obsessed with him. It's absolutely no different that a kid watching an Iron man or Avengers movie, becoming obsessed with iron man, then being gifted a toy of iron man

It's also been confirmed that they went "extra lengths" to disprove the Pixar Theory in Toy Story 4. This theory is really interesting, but it is not true. It's likely that there's either a multiverse, or only some of the films are connected instead.

I think the issue that hasn’t been addressed in the comments so far is that, Ben is addressing this film as if it’s a documentary about a real person that inspired a toy line. Lightyear is both a fictional movie in our universe and in Pixar’s therefore it still fits into the TS timeline and still fits in the theory. Yes this may be the first film that indirectly connects to the theory but it ultimately still does. So many movies have been made about what the future of our world looks like. “Lightyear Released in 1995” could make a film using made up realistic technology. It’s not that out of the ordinary.

From the first time I saw the trailer, I assumed this was a movie inside of the Pixar universe and not real life events. Like Ben said, in our world, we did not make toys out of our famous astronauts. Clearly this is the movie that launched or accompanied the toys, like the Pokemon and Transformer TV shows that were meant to sell toys from the very beginning.

In Toy Story 1 when Buzz first sees his Advertisement: “The World’s Greatest Action Hero is now the world’s greatest toy!” I’m guessing it goes like this, before the events of Toy Story 1, the action movie “Lightyear” is released, booming in popularity with kids and inevitably spawning a full on toy line that also becomes the hot toy on the market that year. So, like many others have gathered here, I’d say that Lightyear “takes place” in the same time period as Toy Story 1, we’re just seeing a movie that just happens to exist in the Toy Story/Pixar universe, so I think we can safely slot Lightyear right on top of Toy Story 1 as a sort of B-Story, an extra bit of lore to the Toys.

I believe the directors said that Lightyear is a movie within the Toy Story universe. Lightyear is basically like their Big Budget SciFi franchise in universe.

I could have sworn that I saw some interview or d23 panel, where the pitch for lightyear was "lets make the movie Andy watched that made him want Buzz" I think this only works as a movie in a movie because who makes an action figure for a kid of a real person, but I think it will work because the audience knows that it is a movie inside of movie going in your not getting the rug pulled out from under you, like in most "it was a dream"

The Pixar Theory should hold up because in cannon light year doesn’t exist it’s a movie in the movie so technically it exists but only as a fictional title within toy story so the theory holds up

I really hope KZfaq fixes that issue, because when I subscribe to a channel I CLEARLY am interested in that content and should be shown EVERY video you guys post.. As many have said, the director already explained in an interview that Lightyear is essentially the Star Wars of the Toy Story universe, a popular movie that was made in the 80’s and spawned two sequels, a TV show (Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) and merchandise (which also explains the lack of any Star Wars toys in Toy Story). The toys we see in the movies are based on the cartoon, hence why they look more like the character designs in BLoSC than in Lightyear. As for why the Buzz toy doesn’t know his own story, my theory is, if we follow the Star Wars comparison, Buzz learned that Zurg is his father in the second Lightyear movie and defeats him in the third, and the TV show that the Buzz toy is based on was made after the success of the first movie, so he wouldn’t know, whereas Zurg was produced after the second movie, so he does have that knowledge.

"Lack of Star Wars toys" This is incorrect, In the 4th Toy Story movie An Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure can be spotted in the club where Woody meets Duke Kaboom. Not only is it an Obi-Wan Kenobi action figure, but it's specifically the original Kenner figure from 1977, which means that Star Wars existed in this universe and that it came out at the same time as the one we know and love.

Yea, I initially presumed this would be a movie within a movie situation when first trailer came out. If they retain that or not though, the continued trailers have not referenced it at all, so will have to see. That sort of ending is generally not well received presently. They could have gone with a 'Princess Bride' approach, where they tell us up front that Andy is going to see this story. But will see how this pans out.

I believe that when Lightyear went on the mission, he got famous, so when he didn’t come back after a while, people figured he didn’t make it and made a action figure for him to represent him as an astronomical icon.

If we take Onward into account, this movie could be taking place on a different planet, and Buzz ended up coming to Earth at some point. Maybe him coming to Earth, and bringing his ship, is what led to the level of technology seen in the Pixar movies

The best way for this movie to fit in the Pixar Theory is to have at the end of the film, show a zoom out revealing everything we saw was a movie within the Pixar timeline, with proof of this being we see a young Andy sitting in a theater with his mom. The toy of Buzz could be based off the “movie” character

My theory is that the Buzz Lightyear toy is based on an ongoing TV show and that's what Andy watched back in the day, but this is the big cinematic debut of the character in the Pixar Universe modern day. "We meet again Buzz Lightyear, but for the last time" is a much more action TV series sentiment where this movie seems like its going more of the Iron Man 1 route of "relatively grounded" origin story of the well established character.

They actually had an animated movie of this very thing called “Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: The Adventure Begins” in 2000 and the opening shows the toys actually watching what we are watching…. Which is an animated movie about Buzz lightyear. So yeah that seems the most likely outcome and it fits and I also remember like others in the comments saying there was an interview mentioning this exact thing.

It could be that Lightyear is the story/memory that Buzz remembered before he became Andy's toy. He did believe he was a real astronaut before he realized he is a toy. So in essence, the lightyear movie could just be a movie based off of Buzz and the Pixar theory is unaffected. I highly agree with that it could be that the Lightyear movie within Toy Story is what sparked the Buzz toy/merch.

I'm just an average Pixar fan but I'm pretty excited for Lightyear specifically. Prediction @ 7:32 The Buzz toy will come to be like any toy tied to an IP has - simultaneous ly dropped alongside games, merch and media of that IP. Meaning that Lightyear will not be home before his toy counterpart hits the shelves because going into space has already made his a hero.

Another possibility is that one of the WALL-E ships landed on another planet. The people there learned about the Buzz Lightyear action figure, and the idea of the toy eventually developed into the truth for them.

I'm confused; I'm so absolutely convinced that it's obviously the movie-within-a-movie that caused the in-universe hype in Toy Story that I was sure it was one of your previous Lightyear theory videos where I first came across the idea. But you're saying that's *not* widely accepted and the way you're already leaning? Well now I have no idea where I got he idea from. Still convinced it's right, to be clear; it's definitely option 2 - a 2022 spin on the 1995-ish in-universe movie; 100% not real events in the context of the wider Pixar Universe.

One of my biggest pet-peeves is fiction being fictional within it's own fiction, or the "it's all a dream" thing. I feel like the story of the Lightyear film in our world would be severely hampered if it panned out at the end and we saw some pixar-verse people watching it. I'd much rather we keep the story of Lightyear as it's own thing, and just have it be a separate timeline / movie within the pixar verse without actually ever pointing it out inside of Lightyear. Like have Lightyear show up as a DVD in Toy Story 5 or something, but keep Lightyear itself contained to the world of Lightyear.

Yeah, I agree that they shouldn’t put anything in the movie that actually connects it to the other Toy Story movies. Even if it’s just a confirmation that it’s a movie within a movie. I think they should just leave it 100% open ended so the audience can interpret it however they want. Because the general audience doesn’t really care how it connects to the other Toy Story movies. Only a relatively small percentage of people actually care about that type of thing. So if they leave it open to interpretation, that allows us to make up whatever way we want for how it fits into the Toy Story universe or even the entire Pixar Theory. But, personally I don’t think it would hamper the story at all if Lightyear specifically states that it’s a movie inside a movie. Because it’s not like the movie would be any different either way. It’s just like watching any other movie, except this one technically exists inside of another movie. Like, if it ends with Buzz dying and then the screen says “Game Over” and reveals that the entire movie has just been a video game (kinda like the beginning of Toy Story 2) then that would definitely ruin the entire story. But if it’s still just a movie either way, it doesn’t really matter. It’s not like 50 minutes into the movie they’re just gonna pan out to show the toy version of Buzz watching it with the other toys and it’ll just turn into Toy Story 5.

Yeah, I don't want an after credit scene showing Andy. I think this whole thing works really well with the Toy Story universe because they are toys and talk about things like their TV shows and video games. Just accepting that this is a movie within a movie is actually an easier conclusion to come to than it being an actual event that happened in the Toy Story world, cause Zerg. It doesn't need an in movie explanation that it isn't the same universe as the Toy Story series.

Oh how wonderful that story was". it would have just invalidated the entire story we'd just been told, and made an otherwise good story bad because of it.

Layered fiction already exists in the pixar movies and not for nothing multiple layers of fiction make for super fun story telling that can't be done any other way. Even if you have had experienced poor writing that includes that trope it very much does not make the trope itself bad. Also layers of fiction are so drastically different than it was all just a dream stories comparing them at all just reveals lack of exposure to the former.

Very clever but also veeeerry tricky that the ad time bar moves fast in the beginning and then slower and slower as the ad goes on. This gives the illusion that the ad will be over quickly when it starts and then as you keep checking the bar it seems to always look like the ad is just about over, but no. Hats off to the editor. Fun Fact: The original plan for the movie was that these were the real world events that happened to the real Buzz, who saved the world from the threat of Zurg and became a hero. His adventure inspired Buzz Lightyear of Star Command which is why that film opens with the toys putting it in to watch on Andy’s TV. Then Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is the movie that Andy saw that made him want the Buzz Lightyear toy. Pretty sure the plan changes but hey, just thought it was interesting. Also, sorry to shut down your second idea Ben, but the director confirmed that won’t happen.

In the premise for Lightyear it says " he ends up time travelling 62 years into the future instead and must now find a way to return home" so isn't it possible that he just time travelled back? Zurg having a death star could actually be 62 years into the future after sputnik

There is one more theory you haven't covered: Buzz comes back. The movie isn't out yet, so we don't how it ends. Technology was already pretty advanced when Buzz left and has advanced by an additional 62 years while Buzz was time traveling. What if, at movie's end, Zerg is defeated, then the Star Command of the future reveals that they figured out the technology to send Buzz back to his original time? Make the process a one-time thing, utilizing some McGuffin that only Zerg had, so the timeline is protected from further time travel shenanigans and the "real" events of the movie can still take place in the Pixar Theory timeline. Then, using his knowledge of the future Buzz prevents the real Zerg from ever existing, saving the future in the process. Buzz then retires from the Star Command of his time and writes a book about his adventures. That book is turned into the Buzz Lightyear cartoon, and Andy's toy is based on that.

In Toy Story Buzz Lightyear was clearly "toy of the year". So Lightyear's mission to go round the sun could have launched in 94 or 95; making his Space Ranger a hot toy that year, a toy based on a space hero who just jettison off on a 4 year mission. So he would return 62 years later would makle it 2056/7.

I thought his flight was only supposed to be 4 minutes long and he ended up being gone for 62 years. So yeah, I guess they could have made a toy based on him even though he never came back. But why would they make a Zurg toy too? And how would they even know about Zurg? Plus, it still doesn’t make sense that they have so much futuristic technology. And why did they say that they’ve been marooned on the planet for a year?
