Those who know in the comments are stating that the song is an overt statement against the British-imposed famine on Ireland. Of course it is, that's why Irish fans sing it. But the fact that British - and in particular English - players are encouraged to learn the song, and sing it...just shows why the Lions is such a special team. Not just in rugby, but in sport. It's about coming together, not celebrating the divisions so common in other spheres.

Pizza Parker the song is about the famine you spanner it’s not fictional, if you listen to the lyrics it’s about a man stealing corn to feed his family/children and he gets caught and is shipped of to Australia/new South Wales. The character may have been made up but the story definitely happend

Amazing, the camaraderie of the Lions every 4 years is something I absolutely love and to see this is another sign of that togetherness. Proud to be Irish and proud to support every Lions player each time they step on the pitch.

Alot of Micks getting upset in the comments about the English lads singing this beautiful anthem. They're trying to get everyone together, castigating 80% of the room isn't going to help 'd'cause' is it now yer feckin' eejit. Cromwell's just as hated in Britain as in Ireland. No, they don't play "their" anthem away because it doesn't represent all Irish. The Southern Irish anthem is only played in Dublin as a courtesy to the host but it is not played away because the Irish rugby team represents Northern Ireland too.

Never on my life would i play for NI (even if I somehow magically became a good soccer player) because the team and the anthem don't represent me and I'm not willing to compromise on that.
