@@SelfPityEntertainment Brosnan never struck me as a tough spy. He was more of a male model who was good with the ladies and could pose with a gun in a suit. Dalton was a believable spy. Living Daylights was excellent, and Licence to Kill had a good revenge premise, but the casting of Felix was a bit off and the drug dealer villain left something to be desired. I'm not one of those war on drugs people even though I don't take them, so the idea that Bond, a super spy, would waste his time with Sanchez to begin with even before Felix was maimed and his wife murdered seemed a bit far fetched to me. There was a good movie there for sure, and Robert Davi is good in it, but it all seemed a bit unnecessary. Felix stuck his nose in a drug dealer's business and everything went to hell from there. Aren't there more serious threats to the world, America or the UK than some cocaine dealer? I'm not saying the villain has to be some over the top cartoon character trying to take over the world either, but it just seemed like a movie the CIA would commission.

I love Dalton as Bond myself, he definitely seems like he is an assassin. The scene with him with General Pushkin (John-Ryse Davies) was well done and Necros was a cool henchman.

Whitaker was a underused and underrated villain. He deserved a few more scenes. However the original workprint had the sequence where Pushkin confronts Whitaker with Whitaker finishing the scene saying " I don't frighten easily General and I have ways to protect myself from your KGB understood" followed by a rather angry " On the double Sgt the General is leaving" he waits till Pushkin leaves turns to the left and exits the room with a rather pissed of expression. Wish they'd have left this in.

I had that issue with The Living Daylights at first, but then I learned that Kamran Shah is most directly based on Ahmad Shah Massoud, the Mujahedeen leader who opposed the Taliban and was assassinated shortly before 9/11. Essentially, the Taliban was an example of what happens to most Internet communities groups: all the sane people got purged by the crazies.

I really liked what Hideo Kojima did with that in MGS5, as it's set in Afghanistan in 1984. It's meant to highlight the fall of the Outer Heaven mercs into brutality from their initially idealistic position but it's never harped on like YOU SEE WE'RE AIDING THE TERRORISTS or anything overt like that. It's designed to intentionally play with the dissonance of values between 1984 and today.

My favorite Bond film. Straight-up. Dalton in this movie nailed Bond like nobody else ever has. It didn't hurt that the film's plotline and characters were fantastic. Necros was played by Andreas Wisnewszki (think I'm spelling that right?) who basically made a career for himself taking secondary parts in spy-themed films. In the space of a decade or so he was in Bond, Bourne, the original Mission: Impossible, and a couple of other really good spy-themed movies. I know almost nothing about this guy but he's been in so many of my favorite movies. I like to think of him, getting very serious or straight-up villainous roles in all of these movies, just chuckling to himself about how much fun he's having, going around the globe to act in all of these International spy movies.

Goldfinger is still my favourite Bond movie Sean Connery's performance makes Bond come across as cool and suave while still being able to make you laugh in scenes like when he's watching Goldfinger play poker through a telescope while he's chatting up Goldfingers girl and taunting him about it. Plus the opening song for Goldfinger is just so memorable after you hear it the song gets stuck in your head.

The one thing that stuck out the most about this one was Bond wearing a tuxedo at an amusement park (where everyone else is clearly dressed casually) and somehow making an amusement park seem fancy. Please keep doing Bond films, Brad! This was great. Daylights would have been even more Moore esque as they cut out a sequence of Bond flying on a Magic Carpet over Tangiers to startled locals. Actually it's Bond on a rug on a board, hung over telegraph wires. Shouldn't be too surprising GoldenEye is Dalton esque. It was originally written for him. The sequence of him being evaluated over his fitness to return to work is a ref to him resigning in Licence To Kill.

This is my favorite Bond movie. It’s the only one that felt like a “real world” flick. Bond was a complex character instead of being a caricature. The bad guys were trying to run a scam on then Soviet Russia. The relationship between Bond and Kara felt genuine as opposed to obligatory. It all felt extremely grounded, almost too grounded. That’s why I love it.

Connery as Bond smoked cigarettes, but Moore had his Bond smoke big cigars. This was partially as EON wanted to make his Bond be different to previous ones, and as Moore smoked cigars in real life (his wage for Live And Let Die inc an unlimited supply of expensive Monte Cristo's while the film shot). He stopped smoking as Bond from The Spy Who Loved Me, seemingly in line with attitudes about smoking (although Russian spy Anya smokes cigs, and Bond bought an expensive lighter). Dalton brought smoking back to Bond, as he wanted to return to Fleming's depiction. Brosnan didn't, although as you say he does smoke a cigar while acting as a tourist in Cuba, in Die Another Day. Craig never has.

I just watched the audio commentary for this film, and Krabbe mentioned he played the villain Koskov as a "Ukrainian peasant." Just a sleazy guy who is playing both sides so he can get to the West and experience the champagne and beautiful women. Personally though I think having a goofy villain, you have to have a threatening villain to balance it out. Instead we got two goofy villains and one competent henchman.

Always loved the Dalton films, it's really too bad he didn't get tp do a third, I can totally see him doing 'Goldeneye'. Dalton was the first to really bring Bond into his own and represent him as Ian Fleming imagined him- cold calculating, and lethal. Dalton brought humor and charm one minute and could nail you to a wall the next! Nothing against Brosnan or Craig, but Dalton's Bond didn't piss around- he new his mission and got right to work-

In my opinion you focus a little to much on the Joe Don Baker character as the main Villain. Of course - officially he was. Personally I more see it as a „Tripple Villain“ movie like From Russia with Love. The characters of Jeroen Krabbe and Andreas Winiewski have maybe more sreentime and are more important for the storytelling. The Necros character reminds me of Red Grant in From Russia with Love. A cold hearted assaissin.

Funny thing about Roger Moore, at first I didn’t like him because I thought he was too silly. then when I got older and rewatching him, even though some of his films are weaker, he was always good. Roger Moore has a level of suave and cool that just oozes off him unlike any other Bond. Plus, someone made a comment and they said notice how often Roger Moore doesn’t smile or laugh even when saying his quips. And when he needed to be cold and ruthless he could do it so well.

Could get behind 25-27 more Brad Jones Bond reviews... extra points if Dave, Brian and/or Sarah make appearances. Licences to Kill's cult fanbase is something I understand, but I'm not a part of. Dalton did get a raw deal, because Living Daylights is very well made, but has a safe and mediocre script. Licences to Kill on the other hand was really poorly made with what felt like a really good first draft of a script. I want to like licences more than I do, but the movie looks really cheap, has jarringly weird things like Wayne Newton, the winking fish, Cary Lowell blowing a bugs bunny escape whole in the side of a bar with a shotgun, and actual ninjas. Lastly, outside of Davi, Del Toro, and Dalton, nearly every single actor gives a bad performance.. even the extras... worst culprit is David Haddison's oddly upbeat Felix at the end of the movie. Talisa Soto is almost unbearably wooden as well, and Johnson from Die Hard is noticeably bad in all 3 of his scenes. Licences to kill deserved a better, less rushed production.
