The Lizard's Tale 101: Meet the Anoles

Anoles are small lizards with an abundance of charm. There are over 400 species of anoles, scattered all over the American and Caribbean tropics: from remote rainforests in the Bahamas, to busy cities on the mainland. In recent years, anoles have come to be viewed as a great model organism for understanding key evolutionary principles. They’ve helped scientists tackle many of the big questions in biology: from the links between ecology and evolution, to the effects of physiology and behaviour. The results are nothing short of eye-opening.

My mother is scared to death of these. If one gets in the house, she ready to move. Somehow I didn't inherit that from her. I think they're cute. And whenever one gets stranded in my house, I don't disturb it. I watch it hop all around my room, changing colors.

you can keep a large leaf plant in your room and mist it for the anole, a little dish of meal worms and you have a free ranging pet. i would do it but cats...you know

@@lunarminx That's a good idea. I love anoles they're adorable. But I'd have to keep them away from my Bearded Dragon, cause he'd eat them.

I love these lizards. I live in central South Carolina, and we always called them "chameleons", even though we knew better. They are often seen on spring mornings, sunning themselves on the wall of my house. I've been fortunate enough to see them mating on a low-hanging tree branch, as well as catching flies.

The Hawaiian language has no silent vowels so we here in the islands pronounce the "e' at the end so ah-noh-leh = anole' rolls off the tongue much smoother almost musical sounding. We also pronounce aloe from aloe vera ah-loh-weh. We have the Southeast US Green Anole, the Puerto Rican Brown Anole, and the Giant Knight Anole. They are all non-native invasive species but we love them anyways. Hawaiian mythology has any tales of mythical lizards called Mo'o moh-'oh some of which were female demi-gods that transformed into beautiful women, and some some were giant Godzilla sized monsters like Mokoli'i the defeated monster who's tail tip is exposed forming Mokoli'i island in Kane'ohe Bay, O'ahu island. Many lizards in folklore but no indigenous lizards in the islands. The little Mo'o Anole will do fine.

I live in New Orleans and we have lots of these little guys around. I was sitting on the back deck early in the morning, about sun up. The bugs are attracted to the light and land on the wall of the house soon the lizards appear and catch the bugs. This morning there were two lizards on the wall. I at first thought they were fighting over territory. But soon one mounted the back of the other and I decided they were mating. Fascinating! I call them my dragons.

I have 3 Green Anoles as pets now but have been caring for them off and on since I was in middle school. They are honestly my favorite reptile next to bearded dragons. They are so personable. I remember when I would catch them wild when a kid. If I missed a catch they would move just out of reach and taunt me with their push-ups and dewlaps. They definitely have some character to them. I can tell mine apart by how they act.

They are a very emotive lizard. Almost to the point I don't like them. Hear me out. I used to work A/C in Central Florida so I was outside everyday. I'd see these things everywhere. I'm on my knees in dirt or gravel installing a condenser and look up on the tree and from the branch looking down on my is an anole with his little smug face as if saying "Pathetic".
