I'm a retired music teacher and just started using Logic about a month ago (was using GB) I'm loving learning more about composing and recording. Your videos are great. They've been a big help in by helping the way I work in Logic. Thanks!

I'm thrilled that they are helpful for you! Just trying to spread the knowledge and in turn likely learn some new things myself through this community. I will be starting a How To Write... series soon where I will go step by step on how to write a whole host of different genres of music. Perhaps that will be helpful to you as well. Thank you for commenting!

You don’t have to start playhead to capture. It works also in stop mode. Capture button has option „capture in stop mode”, it should be turned on (a little triangle on bottom right of the button)
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
True - but if you use it when it is stopped, you'll get a whole bunch of notes on top of each other as it will remember everything you play while stopped. Thanks for pointing that out!

Although I've been using 'captcha recording' for years, I really like your presentations and style. Good work, my friend.

Thank you! ....you can also record without a click when in "ADAPT" mode...and then capture! Logic will give you the tempi you just played in...
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
Yes! You can by changing the tempo mode (under the Tempo in the LCD there is a drop down and it is set to Keep Tempo) and while capture works and the tempo gets set in Adapt mode to how you were playing, it is not very effective for quick tempo changes. Thanks for your excellent feedback and tip in helping the Logic community learn all the feature in Logic!

Yes it works in play, it works after stopping, it works 15 minutes later by remembering what you did after a coffee break. It's a great feature. Thanks for your comment!

As a guitarist, there are so many things about home recording that can break the flow and I like to try things over and over, so much so that I have to wait to be in the right mood to 'record' as its no longer playing. These two key presses will forever change my use of Logic and might just free it up - FINALLY!!!! LOL Ace series my man, I watched it all, subbed and will send this on to other musician friends - you'd be surprised how many keyboard players avoid DAWs because of the same issues.

Oh man - you just made my day! I'm am so happy to help as I have seen way too many people struggle with their Logic workflow. There will be MANY more videos coming including a video in where I nailed my guitar workflow while I was doing episodic TV which required a lot a guitar tracking in a very short amount of time. Look for that video in the next few weeks. Keep watching and thank you SO MUCH for recommending this to others. Cheers!!

Good stuff G !! Beautiful little jam there ... I've known about the capture mode but , I really need to start utilizing it . Thanks
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
Yeah - it really is a game changer - especially when I am scoring - it allows me to try out different ideas and when I hit that cool thing (often by mistake - ha!), I just capture it. Sometimes I listened back to stuff I've written and say to myself, 'I made those chord changes?' I can attribute some of that to capture for sure. Especially when I attempt to do jazz....(not my wheelhouse). Thanks again for commenting - much more to come!

an important detail is to make sure you have the metronome on. or is there an easy way to fix a 103 BPM capture, recorded at 120 BPM
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
Agreed! It is an important point to always start with an established BPM and metronome click (something that eludes some interestingly enough) - But YES there is a relatively easy way to apply a performance that was recorded free form and later conform it to a click and that is by hovering over the end of your recorded region, clicking the 'Option' key so the time stretch mouse icon appears, then stretching or shortening your midi performance to the desired BPM. The only gray area is now good and on time your performance is, but it works! Thanks for weighing in!

George, what version of Logic are you using?
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
Currently I am on 10.7.9 as I have way too many things outside of Logic to upgrade my computer to Ventura to take advantage of what is new in 10.8. - Also, as I am sure you can appreciate, updating systems usually come with a time where things no longer work and you have to do a bunch of upgrades - and being in the middle of many projects, I can't afford the down time. But, yes - 10.7.9....

@@GGabrielMusic Hi, If you click anywhere on the tool bar a pop up appears to customise. Capture record is listed . Add to default 👍🏻

Ah - yes! The Control Bar - I got confused by Toolbar and went to look for it and it wasn't there, but yes you are correct sir that it IS in the Control Bar settings. That's good for people to realize that the feature can be activated several ways, so thank you for adding this tip!

Logic had Capture MIDI since version 2 back in the 90s. Ableton only got Capture MIDI like 2 years ago

Does this only work with midi?
@GGabrielMusic8 ай бұрын
Yes, this capture key command does only work with midi, however there is something called Capture Recording in Logic, but it does not work in the same manner - you actually have to be in record but and it works only with Quick Punch enabled - so it doesn't have the same effectiveness as this does as it is a bit more cumbersome. Thanks for your question!

The solid R on your track implies it is recording...I think. Mine flashes R as armed for recording. The only time mine is a solid R is when I am recording. Not sure how you get the solid R while only playing. I know I'm missing something simple.
@SebSpeaks6 ай бұрын
I think it's because you're recording Midi. I am trying to use this shortcut with an audio track.
@GGabrielMusic6 ай бұрын
Yeah - Logic has 2 modes in midi - (1) Only the 'R' is red while the button is gray - which is midi is activated for the track you have selected but will move to any other track you select and (2) The full record button is red - in which you've armed that particular midi track to be ready to record and if you move to another midi track, it will not play. Honestly, it didn't used to work like that (unless I am going crazy) and I find it quite annoying to the point where I wonder if I accidentally activated some setting that is making it do that. I've looked but haven't figured it out and also haven't ruled out that potentially I AM crazy. BUT YES - R flashes for Audio and DOES NOT flash for midi. Anyway - thanks for reaching out with your question! Hope I didn't confuse you with my ramblings above!
@SebSpeaks6 ай бұрын
@@GGabrielMusic That makes complete sense and is exactly what I see. Maybe I'm crazy too. Still can't get this cool command to work on an audio track though. Might just work with midi. Now I'm working through a different issue with XO. Pulled in a midi drum track and I can see the midi notes in Logic, but no sound is played from the track.....sigh. LOL. I'll get around that by just exporting the beat as a wav. Your channel rocks. I am learning so much. That autoload template is amazing. I seriously never would've gotten this far without your help.
@GGabrielMusic6 ай бұрын
So happy that your liking the content!! Yeah, unfortunately that key command only works for midi - these is something 'similar' for audio, but frankly it's kinda stupid because it really is just punching in, which kinda defeats the purpose. Keep me posted on your progress!! Thanks for commenting!!
