The LONGEST rappel I've ever done - Insomnia Canyon
The I's. They're legendary canyons. And I've only done one of them. It happens to be one of my favorites, so I'm not sure why I haven't gotten around to the rest of them yet.
Except for Insomnia. Insomnia has the distinction of being the most terrifying for me. You see, the longest rappel that I've done is a 180' rap in Sundance. For a good year after I did that rappel, I kept saying that my limit for rappels was 180'. I did not want to do anything 181' or longer. Who cares, right? Once you get over 30 or 40 feet, you're gonna die if you fall anyway. Sure, that's true, but the longer rappels carry complexity when it comes to control. It's easy to get going too fast and lose control. You have the weight of the rope below you that brings variable friction into play. You need to be comfortable in your descending device and switching friction settings on the fly.
Insomnia has a 320' rappel. That's a lot more than 180'.
But I have my eye on another canyon which also has a 300'+ rap, so I needed to get comfortable with bigger drops if I wanted to ever do that one.....So when my friends suggested Insomnia, I reluctantly agreed.

Spoiler - Insomnia Canyon was fun. It was scary. It was beautiful. And I survived.

That rappel is off the charts. Pretty amazing canyon all around, but that drop is something else. Congrats on getting it done.

Previous longest rappel was 180' in Sundance Canyon. That one made me decide that my max rappel was 180'. But I have my eyes on another canyon with a 300 footer, so this was a warm up (320') to decide if it was doable for me. I didn't say a word the entire rappel down. Took around 3 1/2 minutes. I was 100% focused on friction control the entire time; didn't have time to get scared. 20' or 300', once you're on the rope if the system is gonna give, there's not much you can do about it so you just have to put it out of your mind and focus on what you can control.

it's good to see these canyoneering vids mixed into all the normal hikes! but jeeeeez from camera it looks like a long drop but then watching the bag fall... that's a serious Fkn drop!!! Glad you survived!!! lol how many bugs did everyone end up eating? Great vid Jerry!!

No bugs. My mouth was shut this entire rappel. All I did was have laser focus on controlling friction/rappel speed. I didn't say a word until I touched down at the base.

That is some loooooooooooong rappel. I know this will sound weird but watching the video I felt more afraid when you guys were going down the chutes than I was with the actual rappel. I think because camera is wide angle... being in such a small space it feels like you are going to be stuck. And then the drop comes. I hope you have a few seconds to actually hang there and appreciate the moment and soak it all in because technicality gets in the way and adulting requires handling of bits and bobs.. but to just be there... has to be truly captivating.

It's amazing. The chutes are a blast. Especially with a wetsuit so you don't get rock burn. The friction gives complete control of the 'slide', so you can usually stop at any time. Loads of fun.

I think the name comes from how you feel the night before thinking about that rappel. Tina will be back out soon....

Nice video.stunning place. Have you thought about backing up your long raps with a simple prussik cord? By extending your descender and wrapping the prussik below your device? Makes me nervous watching you rap that long drop with no back up. Really stunning Chanel.

I used a prussik as back up for quite a while, but just found I prefer the simplicity of not having one. On this rappel, since it was my longest, I had someone fireman belay me from the bottom. But I specifically went to get experience with a free hanging, 300'+ rappel. The entire way down I was 100% focused on controlling friction and the descent, and it went surprisingly well. I know some people swear by them and won't argue it makes sense. But I'd rather go with what I'm comfortable with.

Sundance terrified me. As soon as my feet left the wall, I spun out to face the void and had to close my eyes to cope. The wet rope, the bouncing (even with a very low elongation static rope), the void... I know I have to do it again, but I needed a break after that one. Definitely not ready for Insomnia.

I feel you! Read the description. Sundance was my previous longest rappel. I rappelled myself right to the ground, laying down. And swore that 181' was longer than I'd ever rappel. But eventually, this happened.

That was crazy high! You are a very, very adventurous guy. Was the terrain and sandstone hard on equipment and packs? Awesome video and good bunch of guys you were with!

The canyons are really rough on equipment. Not as bad as some of the Southern Utah slots, but still. Definitely a good crew to do this type of stuff with. Lucky to have them as friends.

what rope do you use?

Lots of different ropes and different people bring them so I'm not even sure what we used on this trip. My absolute favorite is Bluewater Canyon Extreme. Pricey, but I've had a 100 footer for years now and still works great. My other ropes are Imlay, but they're a little stiff for me. If you're in the Phoenix area, go by Arizona Hiking Shack and they have plenty. Otherwise, look for a local outfitter or go online to some canyoneering sites or groups and ask around. Honestly, I don't know nearly enough to give advice when it comes to canyoneering. I just surround myself with people who have a lot of experience.

Tina decided that technical canyons aren't her thing. She's smarter than me. Although our next trip is a technical canyon, so we'll see. She's actually the one who got me into canyoneering.

We generally do a fireman's belay for anyone who is uncomfortable on a rappel. (Like me on the big rap.) I've used a prussik in the past, but we don't use them often.

@@JerryArizona I understand and agree (about fireman belay) , just speak with my coworker today and said the first man it must have third hand and the rest can go with fireman belay. Once i was alone and it was short rappel (maybe 15 feet) and i sliped with one leg and i was almost with head down and legs up but i manage to hold rope otherwise i would go down on my head (helmet) From that day on i use back up, third hand....
