The longest tennis match, an 11-hour Wimbledon ultramarathon over 3 days, deserves a deep rewind

John Isner and Nicolas Mahut started their 2010 first round Wimbledon match on a Tuesday. Two days and eleven-plus hours of play later, they were still out on the court, locked in what felt like an unbreakable tennis loop.
Isner has his fifth chance to end things and move on in the tournament. Mahut, as you can guess, successfully navigated the previous four. And the eyes of the tennis world are on them both.
But how does a match stretch to this absurd length? You need players with the right combined skill sets, a Grand Slam with a certain adherence to traditions of the sport, and a colleague willing to go on a pizza run.

Then in 2018, Isner and Kevin Anderson played a six hour semi-final which left Anderson too tired to compete properly in the final. Wimbledon then adopted changes to the final set rules, meaning Isner is basically responsible for the modern tournament structure.

For anyone interested - Isner lost his next match in straight sets (apparently visibiliy exhausted), and ultimately had to pull out of his doubles match because of a blister on his toe - so this match while epic, kind of ruined the rest of that Wimbledon run for him.

There's similarly no guarantee an MLB game will ever end. The longest pro baseball game ever played was a 33 inning epic between the PawSox and Rochester Red Wings of AAA minor league ball. The game had to be suspended after 32 innings because everyone was too exhausted. Only 20 spectators made it to that point out of around 1750! The game was made up 2 months later, which ended up selling out, partially due to the novelty of the game and partially due to the fact that MLB was undergoing a work stoppage. The game ended in only 1 inning, though, so maybe the spectators didn't get their money's worth.

Similar with hockey (in the playoffs). The longest NHL game was a 6OT game in 1936. It started at 8:30pm and ended the next day at 2:25am. The game was just shy of the length of 3 hockey games (goal was scored with 3.5 minutes remaining in that 6th overtime period), so not quite on par with that 33 inning game which is basically 3 and 2/3 games of baseball. However, since your example wasn't an MLB game, in 2017 there was a game in the top pro league in Norway that had 2:46 remaining in the 8th overtime, so it was just shy of 3 and 2/3 games of hockey. Apparently the police put out a few tweets to inform people that their friends and family who were last seen heading to the game were not missing persons, the game was just still going.

I was working a traveling sales job in the summer of 2010, and I remember hearing tiny snippets of this match over and over throughout the three days it lasted. I saw the second set Friday before hitting the road overnight. Saturday on my breaks I heard on the radio they were in the fifth set, something like 20-all. Went back to work, forgot about it, and then got up Sunday to hit the road and saw it on NBC. My jaw hit the floor thinking “these guys are still going??!!?” For those of you who aren’t tennis fans, if you actually go back and watch this it will look pretty boring because both players are so tired they are basically just serving and waiting for their opponent to miss… The amazing part is their will and mental endurance. When I saw this match went into a third day, that quote from Rocky IV came into my head: “Forget technique, forget strategy, this is just a street fight. It’s just a question of who wants it most.”

Isner and Mahut set the record for the longest match in Wimbledon (and tennis) history. eight years later, Isner participated in the second-longest match in Wimbledon history (and fourth in tennis history) where he lost to Anderson 26-24 in the final set. In the following year, Wimbledon adopted changes to the final set to include a tiebreaker after 12-12 and in 2022 all slams agreed to use a 'super tiebreaker' (first to win 10 points) after 6-6. So Isner has managed to change tennis in a way that nobody else did lol.

Love Isner. He has made tennis history with a solid enough return game and incredible serve. Not winning any slams, but well known, a multiple record holder, and has made a stack of cash.

I never saw the ending of this match even though I knew it happened. All the explanation of how important it is to break your opponent's serve really paid off at the end. Great job. I would hate to have this assignment having to look though 138 games played in the 5th set. You made it compelling though.

Later developments: Starting in 2019 Australian Open used a first to 10 tiebreak (at 6-6) in the deciding set and Wimbledon used a regular tiebreak at 12-12 in the deciding set. But, starting in 2022, all grand slams use a first to 10 tiebreak (at 6-6). So now a score like this is not possible as no set can exceed 7-6. Fun fact: The 2019 Wimbledon final ended 13-12 to Djokovic in the final set, and unless they change the rules again this it be the only final with that unique score.

I was at this Wimbledon when I was younger in the upper section above the court, queuing for a ticket exchange to see Federer in the big arena. A ball went out of the arena and hit me square in the back of the calf. I remember a man telling me and my Aunt who I was with, to hold on to it and get a staff member to write me a note saying what game it came from. I still have it to this day, Im not even a huge tennis fan anymore but its still a really fond memory. Looking down at Isner and Mahut, thinking they had played 2 days at that point blew my mind as a kid.

Watching this play out over those three days cracked me up because it derailed the schedule for the first week. Because these two were wrapped up in a three-day marathon, matches that would have happened afterward had to be postponed and postponed.

And of course, Isner has to back up these super long matches with the longest tiebreak in ATP history as well, losing to Opelka in a 46 point tiebreak during a Dallas Open match in February 2022.

That set was awesome to watch. I was in college at the time and I would wake up early, watch Wimbledon,, and then go to class a bit after it would end. I was really into that match when it came around to Day 2 and especially Day 3. It was better than binging a show. Kudos to both men for gutting it out like warriors.

Oh man, I remember this so clearly. It really felt like we were all caught in a weird, Groundhog-Day-esque time loop for days on end, waiting for one of them to put the other way. But it just. Kept. Going. It's still one of the most preposterous things I've ever witnessed. It was truly magical. Dark magic, perhaps, but magic nonetheless.
