Because of its hierarchy system, Chinese harem women have been known to literally kill each other in order to secure the best possible position. On top of that, women back then had to rely a lot on their husbands, so I doubt anyone would have expected a husband trying to gain his wife's favor instead of the other way around in those days.

@@ThePrincessCH true..honestly I don't think anyone wanted to believe that Lingyi was in love with Shiyi. There was plenty of evidence pointing towards his feelings for her but everyone kind of brushed it off as if he had another reason for his actions. I understand Lianfang's inability to admit that he had feelings for Shiyi because she spent most of her time convincing herself that he had feelings for her. His mother on the other hand surprised me with her denial because he never once went against a decision she's made except for when it came to Shiyi. He repeatedly went against her and as his mother she should've known that his feelings for Shiyi was different than his feelings for the other woman in his harem. They all knew he had changed but couldn't accept the reason for that change. Once they finally accepted that Shiyi was in his heart they all started blaming her for his decisions. It was such a nightmare and I'm so glad that I didn't live in that kind of environment.
