The very first commercial incarnation was in fact book ends, they came with the trilogy as a promotional item, and was not sold as statues. I think it came with the DVDs. They did this a second time, I believe it was with a miniature minas tirith. It's scary but this was decades ago.

@@kierbaudy now that you mentioned it i vaguely remember that i was very young..i also remember the dvds in a fancy collectors edition box..im going to look the book holders up..yes scary how time flys..the movies dont seem outdated at all.

Hi there 👋 To try and solve this issue, for the past 6 months, instead of releasing a set edition size, we've instead opened a pre-order window of 2 weeks. That means that anyone who would like to pre-order the statue will not miss out. After the pre-order window, we announce the edition size based of the amount of pre-orders we received. Gone are the days of pieces selling out in 1 second 😊

Yea it seems like most of their good stuff is only for the hardcore fans, would be great if they made smaller versions for a cheaper price!

@@ryanator109 It is sad that these pieces are so expensive because it's the hardcore fans that can't afford them, especially in today's climate. Many of these pieces are bought by speculators that never even open them, and probably have never seen the movies, they wait until the limited runs are over and then sell them for much higher prices. As a sculptor however I understand what goes into making figures like this, many, many, hours using materials which themselves are awfully expensive. I doubt Weta can produce them cheaper what with their overheads.

It's a risk you always take if you are collecting as an investment, the manufacturer has a right to issue another run - unless it's a guaranteed limited run in which case you'd have a right to be pissed off. If you are collecting for your own enjoyment, then I don't get why you'd be upset as this just gives newer collectors a chance to get something that will also bring them joy.

@@Beer_Dad1975 I would think it is technically a limited run... Argonath was set at 500 numbered edition. "Sold out" starts becoming meaningless. They can reissue any given character numerous times by giving them a different pose. But a static environment? Why would I be upset? Because it assails my ego as a collector and takes away from my owning rare pieces LOL :P If they had made a piece where you only show the foot of the Argonath and the Fellowship on the river at a more recognizable scale, that would be something else. But this? Bah humbug.

Hi there 👋 This in not a re-issue of the old Argonath statue, but a new piece in a different scale. The rocks on the sides have been cut off to allow for more focus on the statues themselves, as well as utilizing printing technology to create more detail for the tiny figures in the boats. So worry not! Your original piece is still very much a Limited Edition of 500, as these are two different collectibles 👍

@@wetaworkshopnz ha! That’s a pretty trite response weta. I’m with the OP on this one. The secondary market is an essential part of your ecosystem weta. The original was highly prized because of its rarity - not just in price - as it was the only representation of this piece. No one would pay thousands of dollars for a rare piece, rare because it’s the only one out there, if you knew years later it would just be reissued almost the same. At least minus morgul had led lights and was truly an innovative update! I’m assuming the new model is seen as ‘better’ due to advances in techniques / more detail etc. Same justification for producing a new Sauron and no doubt will be used to continue to churn out an endless further series of revised pieces over time. I get that you have a business to run. But this is pushing it. The secondary prices for the old model have collapsed due to this reissue. That’s going to seriously upset a lot of collectors and not just those who bought as an investment - but anyone who wanted ‘the Argonath’ and paid the market price for it. For me and others who didn’t this looks good. But what does it offer over the original apart from benefiting from the advance in manufacturing technique. I feel sorry for genuine holders of the original piece and the fact what was the only representation of this scene is no longer unique. Is the plan to re-release every single statue in updated form? Should I sell Ringwraith on steed and Sam and bill the pony or others because what i thought were unique never to be repeated pieces is no longer the case? I get it doesn’t change those pieces but the more that the unique pieces are ‘updated’ and copied the more the original attraction of owning them is diminished IMO.

I was pretty surprised also when I saw this piece. I sold the original ages ago so I'm glad at a second chance, but it really does make collecting a bit tricky. I have kept most of my weta pieces so these reissues causes a bit of a problem. If it's overdone, it will make me want to stop buying because they will be worthless. We collect them because we like them, but we buy them knowing it won't be worthless in 10 years, even though there's always a risk that it won't hold any value.
