Elder Quentin L. Cook was sustained as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on 6 October 2007. Called as a General Authority in April 1996, he served in the Second Quorum, the First Quorum, and the Presidency of the Seventy.
He previously served in the Area Presidency in the Philippines, as president of the Pacific Islands and the North America Northwest Areas, and as Executive Director of the Missionary Department.
At the time of his call to be a General Authority of the Church, he was vice chairman of Sutter Health System. He had previously served as president and chief executive officer of a California health care system. Prior to that, he was a business lawyer and managing partner of a San Francisco Bay Area law firm.
He is a native of Logan, Utah, received a bachelor’s degree in political science from Utah State University, and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Stanford University.
He has served the Church as a full-time missionary in the British Mission and as a bishop, stake president in the San Francisco California Stake, Regional Representative, and Area Authority in the North America West Area.
He married Mary Gaddie in November 1962. They are the parents of three children and have 11 grandchildren.

Thank you for the wonderful talk on how important it is to put God first in everything that we do. Yesterday I told my friend I would work this Saturday if she came. The Lord was very merciful and reminded through the Spirit that I wouldn't work on Saturdays so I could work at the temple. I felt troubled so I went to the Ogden Temple to do His work. I was done with His work and asked if I could do some more work. They graciously said Yes, while I was doing the Lord's work, all of a sudden I told the Lord I wouldn't work this Saturday but instead keep Saturdays as my temple work day. I felt so much better and much peace.

Some people who do not find the gospel in this life, may be those also who try to work at having integrity, and God gives us rewards for the good we are, and what we have done…for the commandments we have kept….we will be blessed, and have an opportunity to accept along the way, even after this life. Everyone has chances along the way. And we all need to repent every day.

An ordained apostle of the Lord has spoken, wow! His message is still ringing in my heart. I was a bishop twice and got to experience first hand the ways that the Holy Spirit works in the lives of the Saint. I have also seen members have contention with each other. But, I have seen hearts changed and replaced by a greater love of the Savior. My advice to you is to first look inward. With the experiences you have had, you can start the healing process in your ward. Discuss with the Lord what He would have you do; then listen and act. You won't find a holier and wiser group of men than the Apostles and Prophets we have today in the church. So, dear brother, be the person your Savior would have you be and find find the fruit at church. I love you, brother. May His Love for you sink deep within your heart.

Alright, that was pretty clear instruction! Right at 15:56 I was about to press BUY on a whole raft of stuff in my cart, and this was said. Background ~ I am listening to this talk while browsing Aliexpress for some new dolls to dress and sell. Meanwhile, in the back of my head is the thought that I really should be spending my time taking care of my family history, but of course, i am putting that off by listening to this talk and browsing Aliexpress at the same time.🤔😒 Do you know what? The Spirit works in all sorts of ways on all sorts of people, at all sorts of times, on all sorts of things....yah, I didn't end up buying anything, instead I shut down Aliexpress, recognized the problem, and started writing this. Thank you for this very timely talk! 🥰🥰🥰🥰

D&C 88:32-33 32 And they who remain shall also be quickened; nevertheless, they shall return again to their own place, to enjoy that which they are willing to receive, because they were not willing to enjoy that which they might have received. 33 For what doth it profit a man if a gift is bestowed upon him, and he receive not the gift? Behold, he rejoices not in that which is given unto him, neither rejoices in him who is the giver of the gift.

This was a pretty good talk up to the comparison of funerals. In the inferences Elder Cook draws from observation, key information is missing. As a father of teens and younger children I can say it is extremely difficult to teach pure truth to children in a church culture that promotes institutional loyalty at the expense of conscience. So to hear one’s successes in other areas of life ascribed to the choice of prioritizing worldly desires over church rings hollow. Some people do that, it’s true, but it’s nowhere near representative. There’s also some heavy “glass half full/empty” characterizations made here. Is it wrong for a funeral to be somber? It sounds like the first man was beloved and will be missed. I’ve lost family, and even knowledge of and faith in the plan of happiness couldn’t reduce the pain that was at times crippling. On the flip side, there are many cases where funerals were essentially hijacked to over focus on the plan of salvation rather than just to provide context for grief and to plant a seed of faith in some.

To venerate fiction to Gospel is blasphemy. Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

0:06 there is no personal righteousness, only the righteousness of Christ. See Book of Mormon and New Testament 8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death; 11 If by any means I might attain unto the resurrection of the dead. 12 Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect: but I follow after, if that I may apprehend that for which also I am apprehended of Christ Jesus. 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on him whom he hath sent2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. 3 For they being ignorant of God’s righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God. 4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

3:59 a few “facts” - fore ordained? That is smuggling in a presupposition. Please establish and demonstrate how joe smith is fore ordained without motivated reason and conflicts of interest meaning you don’t get to use his works / words. BoM and D&C are out. This whole talk is bad reasoning from the start.

His assumption here is that the members of the church are righteous and when you go to church, you're among the righteous. And when that's not true? I listened to this and kept thinking about my local ward, which is a hotbed of apathy, indifference, unkindness, dishonesty, and even abuse. Not seeing righteousness there. This fact seems to completely escape the top leadership of the church. And don't respond and tell me everyone is imperfect. There's imperfect, and there's mean and cruel. These people are mean and cruel.

@saintguymoski364 What I'm saying is that this attitude of "we never see anything wrong," "we're the righteous," and "suffer with a smile always," leads to complete blindness when people are being cruel and abusive. It's a recipe for creating and then excusing abusive environments. The church blathers constantly about how it opposes abuse, but it routinely creates an environment where abuse flourishes. No one is looking for pity. I'm looking for intelligence, common sense, and some shred of decency. What is your purpose in responding as you did? Because it accomplishes nothing except to excuse injustice and abuse. The whole, "you're meant to suffer and you should suffer with a smile," needs to stop. It's just enabling bullies and abusers in our wards. And they are flourishing. This is driving people out of the church by the thousands, but no one will acknowledge it or address it. They just keep on doing the same thing and expecting people to sit there and take it. I think these guys are going to have some tough questions to answer at the judgment seat.
@Choosefaith7
@Choosefaith7 8 ай бұрын
@@phoenixrising5338 ‘the church blathers about ….’ Are you meaning that the church leaders speak out against? I would think that’s a good thing, right? Not sure how that creates a place for abuse to flourish. Are you wanting a church military that enforces all of its teachings? That would go against everything God has set forth. We all have agency. And yes, we all make mistakes because of that agency. We cannot change others actions, but the only actions we will be held accountable for is our own. There are unkind and mean people everywhere. And yes, the church is not immune. We should all know better and be better, but we have not walked in their shoes. We all have a story and only God knows our hearts. Don’t let others actions be a stumbling block for you. You are not responsible for the actions of others. But keep in mind, we are responsible for our reaction to them. Best wishes.

Dear Phoenixrising, have you discussed this problem with your bishop? If the majority of your ward is as nasty as you say they are, surely there are others there who are feeling the effects of their negativity, too. You would be doing not only yourself a favor, but the others they are hurting as well. And you'd be doing the negative ones a favor, too, because they certainly aren't going to find favor with the Lord the way they are! You know, I was in a ward once that was very unfriendly...not mean, just unfriendly. I'm naturally a very outgoing person, and every week I'd try to strike up a conversation with various people, and I might get a "Hi" but that was it. One day I was late arriving, and I figured I'd sit in the foyer 'til they finished passing the Sacrament. I noticed another woman sitting across from me, someone I hadn't seen before. So after Sacrament was done, I started chatting softly with her, and found out that she had been inactive for quite some time and had recently decided to come back. For a few weeks after that, we sat in the foyer just talking & getting to know each other. She said she had almost given up because everyone was so unfriendly! Eventually we went into the chapel and took Sacrament with everyone else instead of out in the foyer. We're still friends to this day! A few months afterward, our ward boundaries changed and we both ended up in a much friendlier ward! 😊😉 So Phoenix, I'd say good luck but I don't believe in luck...I believe in blessings. I'm sure there's someone there who needs you as much as you need them, maybe more than one! God bless you!🥰❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
