A square yellow sponge named SpongeBob SquarePants lives in a pineapple with his pet snail, Gary, in the city of Bikini Bottom on the floor of the Pacific Ocean. He works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. During his time off, SpongeBob has a knack for attracting trouble with his starfish best friend, Patrick. Arrogant octopus Squidward Tentacles, SpongeBob's neighbor, dislikes SpongeBob because of his childlike behavior.

Fun Fact: "The Sponge Who Could Fly" was originally intended to be the finale of the show, and was treated as such for a while, with grand commercials leading up to the treasure hunt, the walk cycles, the Remembering SpongeBob sequence, etc. Of course, the show was too popular for Nickelodeon to possibly end it, and there would be much to come after the movie.

This was NOT supposed to be the finale of it. I have a Reddit post on it where I did extensive research and include links about it. Stephen Hillenburg NEVER said this. And the popular misconception is that the MOVIE was supposed to be the last, not this one.

Fun fact: all of that merch was custom-made for that scene (since the FCC would consider showing actual merchandise as tantamount to advertising it, and it's against the rules for a show to advertise its own products within the show itself [this can be broken if the product is no longer for sale, as is the case in a later episode where they show a discontinued Burger King toy]). You can tell because every character has changes made to their design; all of their eyes are the classic pie-shape, and SpongeBob has a bowtie and black Krusty Krab hat.

I swear the alternate/marketing titles for all the specials in season 3 have cooler names than what those episodes are actually called on their official title cards. "The Sponge Who Could Fly" is not a bad title, though it is referencing the 1986 fantasy film The Boy Who Could Fly.

Here it is. The finale episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. An episode that premiered on TV in the United States nearly 20 years on October 11, 2004. After that episode premiered, SpongeBob officially died with no need for anymore episodes and left the impact of being the greatest Nickelodeon cartoon to ever grace our TV screens.

Hey Cody! I’m glad you and Nick finish season three. If you guys plan on continuing with SpongeBob, there’s a few heads up so I want you to know about. I’m sure other people in the comments are going to leave a similar message, but here’s mine: After the end of season three, SpongeBob‘s creator, Stephen Hillenberg, stepped down and passed the torch to another producer. As a result, seasons 4 and 5 were not bad, but they didn’t have the same charm as the original three (but trust me, they do have some pretty good episodes in them). But then you have seasons 6, 7, and 8, which many consider the WORST seasons of SpongeBob. The writing becomes sloppy and mediocre, and the characters end up becoming downright despicable and hateful. And this is because of two reasons: 1) SpongeBob got a whole new cast of writers after the original writers stepped down, and 2) Nickelodeon increased the amount of episodes per season from 20 to 26, so those new writers had even LESS time to come up with new ideas. But SpongeBob has been getting better since season 9. Stephen Hillenburg actually came back to work on the show, despite being diagnosed with ALS at the time, and even brought back a lot of of the original writers. And the show has slowly been getting peoples’ attention again ever since. I really enjoyed your reactions. And I hope to see more in the future.

I love the lost episode because When Patchy got mad that he got a fake lost episode of Spongebob he tried to get rid of most of his Spongebob merch. Also some people stop watching the show when season 4 was released. But I watched season 4 and I liked that season but I stopped watching when season 5 and 6 were released because I heard those seasons had terrible episodes. I did watched a few episodes of both seasons and there were some episodes I didn't like. I skipped some episodes but then last year I watched the episodes I skipped and some were ok and some were bad. So you don't have to stop watching if you don't want to for now.

The Sponge Who Could Fly isn't horrible, but what made me consider it to be one of the weaker episodes of the season is none other than the Bikini Bottomites, who acted like entitled jerks to SpongeBob for no real reason and even take advantage of him when he gains the ability to fly.

Quirky Quota right? Though they've been reacted to the episodes out of order lately due to Paramount+ messing up the order of episodes. Especially around season 9, Paramount+ puts those episodes in US premiere order instead of production order.

@@thepandorica1660 I still think it's a little jarring to see how Paramount+ can't seam to make up their mind between production order and airing order with SpongeBob. But Amazon Prime Video and modern iTunes also appear to be using the same order as Paramount+. The old seasons are in production order for the most part and the newer seasons are in premiere order. It's a mess. It's amusing to see the reactor claim they did SpongeBob Season 9 Episode 9 ("SpongeBob, You're Fired") & 10 ("It Came from Goo Lagoon") GROUP REACTION when those episodes are actually Season 9 Episodes 11 & 7. At least most of the SpongeBob season DVD releases have the episodes in the correct production order.

At 8:59, I remember having the dvd pack that contains this episode, the part where the narrator was recapping was omitted in that release.

That minor scene of the French Narrator saying, "Will SpongeBob learn to fly? Stay tuned," was cut from The Sponge Who Could Fly VHS tape and all DVD releases because there are no commercials on the DVD/VHS. However, this scene is still intact on TV airings, digital versions, and streaming releases.

I like post-movie, but if Paul Tibbitt (the writer for these three episodes) was able to storyboard direct as well as write for season 4 and/or Kent Osborne (the other writer for these three) could write an episode while he was still a staff writer in season 4, it could have been AMAZING! it was still great, but we could have gotten another AMAZING episode with Kent or Paul.

The Strangler and Pranks A Lot episode were a fun way to end the season on imo. It’s always fun watching the Strangler miss every attempt to get back at SpongeBob, only to turn himself in jail to get away from him in the end. This includes, Patrick and SpongeBob messing with each other with the invisible spray and posing as ghosts to scare everyone.😄 Overall, it’s been a fun ride rewatching season 3 with you and Nick. See you guys in the next season!
