In explaining her own struggle in the context of her Christian faith, Claire McCully arrives at a conclusion that sexual orientations and gender identities, that differ from heteronormative expectations, should not be defined as sin, that people's identities and the diversity of God's creation should not be condemned, but should, instead, be embraced and loved.
Claire McCully was born and raised in a small California town near Yosemite National Park. She is the youngest of six children, has worked as a seasonal firefighter, and was also employed as a library worker. She earned a Masters of Fine Arts in creative writing from CSU Fresno and is currently a writer, English professor, and a parent of six children. Claire recently participated in Reno’s first Literary Death Match. In addition to writing and teaching, she enjoys being in the outdoors, hiking through the Sierra, mountain biking, and snowboarding. She is thankful to call Tahoe her home.

Destroy people. Who does that? Besmirching innocent people, falsely accusing them of crimes, wanting to drag them out and shoot them, and then say they are "protecting our nation, our way of life, and our shared values". The last time I was on a camping trip with my boys, we had a massive rain and wind storm pummel the campground. The next morning, a couple stopped their car as they were driving by our campsite. “You get the ‘mother of the year award’,” the man told me. I think we were the only tent campers who made it through the storm. It’s good to have a tent that stays dry and to put heavy rocks on top of the tent stakes, so your tent doesn’t collapse in 60 mph wind :) I am very grateful to be a parent to my kids, and I’m glad I live in a state where laws protect trans parents’ rights.

@@thebomarmonk That's awesome as that sounded like a lot of fun as there's actually dresses and stuff designed for camping trips. I'm hoping to go on a camping trip in the future in a dress as a friend who crossdresses also did it last summer and got me motivated to give it a shot. I might even go with him since he has a desire to do it again. You gave some good advice too with the tent and how to keep dry and protective against strong winds. That outfit is perfect for those rainy conditions especially the boots. I got some that are similar to the ones you wore as I stay in tall boots in my dresses or nightdresses that I wear outside. Yeah, I salute you as a parent to your kids and being there for them and yes it's important to be in states that protect trans' parents rights as it's a shame in some states that they let lifestyles get in the way of kids being with their parents.
@thebomarmonk
@thebomarmonk Жыл бұрын
@@frankyforever4980 well, I am just being me. My identity is no more of a “lifestyle” than someone else who is a cisgender man or woman who is simply being themselves. Ever since I was a young kid, I’ve always understood myself to be at odds with my assigned gender. So accepting that I was trans was simply a decision to stop putting on a facade and to start being whole. As for “cross dressing,” I know of some people who do that for various reasons, almost as a hobby or for drag performances. And that’s perfectly fine, but it’s also important to understand that I am not a “cross dresser.” This is my full time authentic self. And as for camping in 60 mph winds and rain storms, I highly recommend pants over skirts and dresses, whether you are a cross dresser, a trans woman, or cis woman! Jeans a tank top and a flannel shirt will work great camping :)

@@thebomarmonk Oh, yes! I was part of 2 teams at a church, knew everyone, had keys and codes... and lost it all when I started my transition. I was thrust into the arms of a self-proclaimed demon and lost all my faith. Since then I've been very confused and divided by Christians. They say their way is life yet I know their way is death - at least it is for me. *Hearing you speak helps stabilize my faith and justify my belief.* I believe much like you do. And I hope I can be as beautiful, confident and well spoken as you "when I grow up."

Rachael, if I had listened to the pastors at my church, it would have been so much harder to survive coming to terms with my authentic self. I’m glad you have been strong enough to get through how they mistreated you. I still meet with one of my pastors for coffee (at least before this whole Covid-19 thing), and he has proven that he is willing to love me as a sister in Christ, even though he has either been unwilling or unable to change the church’s stance against LGBTQ people. I’ve come to identify more as a Christian heretic and freethinker. While my savior is still Jesus Christ (truly), I don’t pay much mind to dogma and orthodoxy. I was never much of a fundamentalist to begin with, and I believe in revelation through science and the Holy Spirit (the revelation through the Holy Spirit being restrained by logic, rationality and scientific evidence). I don’t need to believe Noah’s Ark literally carried all the animal species during a global flood, in order to see that the story has a literary or mythological truth about disasters and how faith can help us through them. I’m looking forward to your TedTalk or hearing more of your story somehow in the future!

@@thebomarmonk Thank you for the kind words. And I pray you are able to stay strong in your faith as well. I finally realized God was refining my heart and my faith. Being cut off from everyone hurt very badly. As I rebuilt my faith I realized it hurt because I depended on others to help carry my faith. It forced me to build my faith as a personal relationship with God, not the shared relationship I had with God and my wife and my pastor and the church buildings. Every once in a while my faith is shaken a bit by someone claiming to be Christian. They display a vehement disregard for love and a dogged determination to declare they know the truth - and I am wrong. In the grand scheme that is my life, these sad people are but gnats - little more than an annoyance. My faith is much stronger today than ever before.

I'm so glad that they feel at peace with their relationship after their journey. Yet I'm slightly confused. If we are made in love by God, and God is a perfect being that doesn't make "mistakes" when creating us into who we are (man, woman, whatever race it is that is our being, whatever "disability" we have). If we are made to represent something of his beautiful creation, why would we personally chose to orient ourselves into something that God ultimately didn't chose for us? If we disagreed with how God made us to be, wouldn't that be conforming to what society believes is right, rather than what God has set before us? Would someone please explain contextually from the Bible, I'm struggling to see how changing ourselves to represent our own image, is okay God's eyes after everything that I've learned. I know that its such a triggering thing to say in current day, but I truly am curious and wanting to learn if there are other points to consider. No hate here please, i'm just wanting to see another person's perspective!! :) Thanks

Lavon, trans people exist in nature and are part of reality. If God is an all powerful creator of the universe, including human life, then he created LGBTQ people, including trans people. Hateful bigots like you simply have to close your eyes in order to pretend certain people do not exist. You are therefore the one hiding your eyes from the truth of God’s creation, and then having to convince yourself that this is somehow in line with how Christ would have you act. I’m glad I don’t have to try to support a weak argument simply to defend some hateful prejudice. How sad.

I'd like you to ask this same question about birth defects, and babies born with diseases. Why cure it? God planned for that to happen.
@thebomarmonk
@thebomarmonk 3 жыл бұрын
@@rainjaydd8213 so if someone is born with a heart-valve defect or a cleft palate, these people should just live shorter or more uncomfortable lives, even if medical science can help them live longer or more comfortably? And trans people almost always get to the point where their gender dysphoria prohibits them from being able to live fully, where they feel they need to transition in order to keep living. For people who are not trans, it certainly isn’t their place to deny trans people the opportunity to live their lives fully, and it shows a lack of empathy for someone to insist that a person with a heart-valve defect must not live as long in order to somehow follow some arbitrary rule that they must surrender to whatever fate doled out to them at birth. That is truly a cruel and arrogant disposition towards people who are born with such challenges. Rather, it is far more loving and compassionate to hope that people live fully by meeting and even overcoming the challenges in their lives. And we certainly want people to appreciate the blessings they have been given in their lives on this earth. For me, being trans is a blessing I have embraced and that has made me a better person.

Christ never married or had children. Christ never flew in an airplane or surfed the Internet or binged a television show or used a smartphone. He also never saw North America or had to decide “paper or plastic.” It seems like a lot of people would be in trouble if we had to be exactly like Christ, in a purely literal sense.

Darrell, the teaching behind every religion is the golden rule. Treat others how you would like to be treated. Religion was teachings about Gods love and compassion. Religion was never supposed to carry so much shame, judgment, and guilt. Over hundreds of years, the teaching of all religion has been distorted. Jesus, God, Mother Mary, Mary Magdalene, and many more saints and sages would never look down on ANYBODY. The compassion and love they hold is unfathomable and never-ending and the amazing thing about their love is you never have to "do anything" to get it. This love is always available to everyone. It is honestly so sad to see so many people in the world living in shame and guilt because of religion. I really hope that this changes and we can open our eyes, and our hearts to all the love that is here for all of us. Trust me, it feels really good to let go of the anger, fear, and judgment. It will never get you anywhere, it will only get you frustrated. With much love, Kristin

Wow. So, at the time of my Ted Talk, I was just a bit over a year into my transition. Plus, I’m not particularly interested in conforming to social expectations just to satisfy the need to “pass.” I am interested in being authentically myself. I think if anyone in the cis community or trans community makes it about social expectations for gender, that person is reducing a person’s identity to something essentially superficial. For me, a big part of being myself was leaving the social pressures placed on me since birth to conform to my assigned gender. So I’m not asking for another group of conventional elitists to stick me into another box or prison cell. On the other hand, social conformity, or a lack of it, has its consequences, and your judgmental comment illustrates that reality. But I’ll remain as free as possible from such petty cages that are simply fabricated by the insecure to make them feel better about themselves.
@thebomarmonk
@thebomarmonk 4 жыл бұрын
... and I think people need to be accepting of people whether they fit gender expectations or not. Even for binary trans girls, they have to start their journey somewhere. In the end, it is more unbecoming of a trans girl to reinforce prejudice towards gender non-conforming or non-binary people, than it is for a trans girl to have five-o’clock shadow. Plus, you are playing into the feminists’ complaints that trans women just reinforce objectification of women. Shame on you. Go back to your own voice lessons, if that’s something that makes you happy. But don’t try to pressure everyone to be like you. It won’t work anyways :)

They can ConfessTheir Sins to Jesus Christ just like every Christian has✝️📦✝️

Charles Miller, make sure to confess your sin of bigotry and prejudice toward those who are the “least among us.” If I was a person who professed to follow Jesus, which I am, I would be more worried about my own sin, rather than being lured by Satan to be a self-righteous and prideful legalist. Your disposition has nothing to do with Jesus, and it has everything to do with allowing your mind to be conformed to this fallen world. I hope you repent of this, for your own sake. As it is, you are a poser... a phony religious pretender who props up your own ego by judging others. Good luck with that, especially in the eternal scheme of things.

Claire is much closer to Jesus than you are at the present time. You can't allow yourself to see the suffering you're promoting, but it exists nonetheless. God bless you as well.

Allison Online, thank you! I know I have a long way to go to be “close” to Jesus, but accepting myself as a trans woman has brought me closer to God and truth, not kept me from God and truth.

Augh! Adams Apple….!

Yep, I definitely had one of those, although not a particularly pronounced one. Some cisgender women have features that aren’t typical of all women either, and it doesn’t mean that people like you should go around trolling them on the Internet just because they don’t fit into your shallow and stereotypical expectations. As for Adam’s apples for trans women: Unless a trans woman goes on hormone blockers just prior to puberty, they end up with physical changes they didn’t want. I didn’t transition until my 40s, so the only way to deal with these unwanted physical changes would be through surgery, which is far more risky and not as helpful as taking the blockers would be. Think about that the next time you hear someone wanting to ban trans healthcare. Also, thank you for helping me make an important point!

@simpleton I suppose you would say this to someone born with a cleft palate? Someone born with a different pigment to their skin? Such people aren’t trying to “make life more complicated.” Life just includes people who come into the world a bit different than yourself. And that’s a beautiful feature, not a problem.
