How lucky could you possibly get in a game of Pokemon? It seems like a simple question, but as you will soon see, it has a not-so-simple answer...

Ok, so a couple of minor things that I forgot. First, I was not keeping track of our Squirtle's HP throughout the run, since I had assumed that since we were dodging basically every attack, it would not matter too much. However, some of you pointed out that with Squirtle's ability Torrent, sometimes it might be advantageous to get hit and be low on HP so we can deal more damage. And second, there's a weird mechanic in Fire Red and Leaf Green that I completely forgot about where having certain gym badges will buff specific stats for your Pokemon. Specifically, Blaine's badge gives you a boost to Special Attack, making it easier to one-shot pokemon later on. That's why Blaine is done before Erika, so that would also change the numbers a bit. Good catch, everyone!

The irony of this whole thing is that if this ever happened and you tried to submit this as a speedrun, everyone would just think you cheated and the speedrun would get rejected. I guess the real question is what is the luckiest game of Pokémon people would still believe you accomplished legitimately.

17:28 - The optimal path is to plan for the maximum number of grass tiles (all five), but to simply walk upwards after getting a nidoran on the first tile. It doesn't seem like you accounted for that as an option

Oh yeah, that's really smart, I hadn't thought of that! Would be a little more complicated to find the odds for that, but I'll have to look into it

@@TheChiptide Thanks for the reply! Yeah, it should entail just some additional algebra, but I think it's not a big deal tbh. This probably wouldn't even change the odds by an order of magnitude. Still, I wouldn't blame you for wanting it to be precise after all the work you put in!

Fun fact, I. Gen 1, the trash can puzzle in surge’s gym is bugged. It’s supposed to generate the second switch adjacent to the first one but instead it’s a 50% chance to be the top left can every time.

I know its technically a disease, but catching Pokerus would have been an interesting wrinkle in these calculations. Pokérus doubles the EVs gained from defeating Pokemon so catch it in the beginning of the game and your maxing out your EVs twice as fast, which can be very lucky.
@TheChiptide
@TheChiptide 2 ай бұрын
Actually, I did consider that, but I looked into it and apparently Pokémon can’t spawn with Pokerus in Fire Red and Leaf Green! The only way to get it would be to trade in a pokemon with Pokerus from Ruby and sapphire

I personally think this is the best video you've done when it comes to making viewers deranged from all the probabilities and maths, which means... GREAT JOB, CONGRATULATIONS. YOU DID IT. For a moment I thought you were going to figure out the exact time this speed run would be timed as, but that is already even more work on top of figuring all of this out. So it looks like we'll have to find a crazy TASer who would be willing to waste- Err I mean, use up their hard earned knowledge and time making this run VISIBLE. They might even find new issues to deal with, like priority moves or something...
@TheChiptide
@TheChiptide 2 ай бұрын
I considered doing that, but there's just too many variables involved, especially if you assume a human is doing it. Who knows, maybe someone braver than I will attempt to find that out one day, though!

You forgot that after every battle you could get infected with pokerus, which would waste time after you heal at the next center visit until the last one, in which case you might need it for the extra EVs that could give you an extra stat point to help you KO something (probably does not but it could)
@TheChiptide
@TheChiptide 2 ай бұрын
Actually, I did look into it, and in Fire Red and Leaf Green specifically it’s apparently impossible to contract Pokerus! You can trade in a Pokemon who already has it from one of the Hoenn games, but I guess to try to stay faithful to the originals you can’t get it naturally

Since I’m assuming you never get hit unless you can’t possibly avoid it, and you’re one-hit-KOing 90% of the pokemon in the game with crits anyway, it never actually came into play, unless I missed one somewhere
@eleviathan7488
@eleviathan7488 Ай бұрын
@@TheChiptide Well I'm thinking that Torrent can turn two or three shots into one shots. And you have to take damage anyway so it may be optimal to avoid healing: 1. To save time and 2. To possibly activate Torrent for faster and or less risky fights. And you probably get down to 1/3 health at some points no matter what so it would be something you have to consider in some battles. Although if you're factoring for torrent and avoid pokemon centers then you have to account for PP usage as you can't just use potions and stay in torrent range the whole game. I mean I get why you didn't, it's another variable in an already huge equation, but I'm just trying to be thorough.
@eleviathan7488
@eleviathan7488 Ай бұрын
And then there's other pokemon's abilities, like blue's overgrow, Poison point, flame body, static, intimidate, and the like, but most wouldn't have any impact. Maybe this experiment would be similar in gen 1 or gen 2.

17:56 Hate to ruin all your wild encounter math, but this is also incorrect. The game gives you a few steps grace period after encountering a wild Pokémon where you will never encounter another one. So if your first grass step is an encounter you know the next one won’t be.
