@@CR1MSONACE Besides Grovyle (and even then, at least it would have no coverage against Jirachi, and much easier to manage with the other mons available before compared to the other two starters) ofc, the game becomes incredible easy and a matter of just clicking the damage moves. Having done a gen 3 living dex myself, I'm honestly confused as to why he even bothered playing through the game instead of trading Treecko and Jirachi immediately after getting the Pokedex. Not only grinding becomes much easier to evolve the mons, you can also trade them back overlvled right after and they'd still obey the og savefile and continu the game with the overlvled starter.

ORAS was the fun uncle of the franchise. Easily the game that cared the least about making you put in a bunch of meaningless work and honestly a trend I wish would have continued going forward. Gyarados is based on a myth about carp who were strong enough to not only swim upriver, but jump over the dragon gate. Passing that test granted them ability to fly, and those flying carp were dragons. Which is to say: They didn't "turn into dragons" and that let them fly, Chinese "dragons" are the carp version of Superman. They're fish that fly first, and "dragons" second.

I'd understand if the goal was to completely avoid using unofficial methods (emulation) but they used the celebi and jirachi bonus disks, and with their prices it's fair to assume that those were done with emulation.

It truly is the end of an era. I cannot wait to see what you have in store for the future, and thank you as well for proving to me that not only is this possible, but it is worth the adventure. I'm now aiming to complete the entire franchise's list of Pokédexes, regional AND national, and it will take me many years to accomplish. But it can be done. Gens 7 and 8 are completely under my belt, I've completed the Platinum Dex (in a copy of Diamond no less!), and while my main focus is on SV right now, I plan on going back and completing Hoenn, Kanto, and Gen 3 as a whole as well. I know this is very "Um AcTuAlLy", but hopefully it helps explain your issues with Torkoal. You had issues with Torkoal because your grass starter was the only Pokemon even close to the same or above level. The level of the Pokemon and its stats (which are also determined by its level) are both used in damage calculation. They "pretty much" (level gets reduced in the calculation) multiply together and then get divided by the opponents defense. Your Jirachi and Numel's were all 10'ish levels bellow Torkoal thus you did significantly less damage to Torkoal due to its high defense, and you took significantly more damage from Torkoal due to being very under leveled.
@xeladas
@xeladas 10 күн бұрын
The issue was less the absolute difference, and more the relative difference, Pokemon stats grow linearly with level, so when Lyra was fighting Pokémon twice the Jirachi's level those Pokemons' stats were about twice that of the Jirachi, so were doing about double the damage they normally would (while if Jirachi attacked it'd be doing half damage)

Design philosophy behind Dragon types in Gen 1&2: Dragon resists your starter's primary type. It does not matter which starter. It also resists Electric. (Electric is the earliest available Special type.) It is owned by the final member of the Elite 4, as a soft-check to hinder your starter and encourage catching something other than the earliest Pokémon available and/or have a mixed team. There is 1 Dragon available. Gen 2, exact same concept, except now the 8th Gym has the Dragon, and there's a new (significantly less powerful) Dragon on her team. And the final member of the Elite 4 is now the Champion/the Champion now has Dragons instead of a mixed team.) New set of gyms with #16 being a notable mixed team, followed by the not-so-secret mixed team boss on Mt.Silver

One huge tip for level grinding in Gen 3 (and ORAS later): If you have access to a second Gen 3 game to Record Mix with, there is a strat known as Blissey Bases. This is where someone sets up their Secret Base with their team having three level 100 Blisseys that all do not know any damage or recovery moves. This allows anyone else that mixes records with them to grind against these Blissey repeatedly for super fast XP. (because Blissey is the pokemon with the single highest base XP given by far; it gives 2.5x more XP than Ludicolo or Shiftry, and XP given scales with the target's level, so level 100 Blissey give crazy xp) Also, fun fact that isn't really useful: Gabby and Ty will stop changing locations after you beat them 255 times. They will just always be at Route 111, but still able to continuously rematch.

Awesome, a new vid! You really tried to do this as fairly as possible. I was a bit more liberal with restrictions (e.g. used distributions, turbo speed, etc.). This allowed me to catch up with you and even get well ahead without as much hassle, the need to play Colosseum as long, or XD at all. I think I started replaying from Gen I around the time you were doing Gen II, but I had finished my Gen I-III Living Dexes by the end of Jan 2024. Then I started Gen IV and finished the Living Dex there in May. P.S. Easiest way to mass trade is using Box. That's how I moved 150+ Pokemon without trade fodder, which was nice since trading in mGBA is hit and miss. I found trading on MelonDS a lot quicker and more enjoyable. Anyway, tanks for making these vids. They introduced me to the concept of a Living Dex and are the reason I went for this challenge. It's been fun. :) EDIT: So you used distributions too, ended up getting two Ho-oh and Lugia, haha. I just got them from the islands in Emerald and FRLG myself.

Not that you need the help anymore, but there's a glitch with the reporter duo that causes them to stay on route 11 after beating them 255 times. Probably an overflow error, and I don't think you'd even need to beat them that many times to begin with, but it's there.

Congrats on completing the Gen 3 Living Pokedex! Only issue is Faraway Island Mew was limited to JP copies of Emerald, so an English Mew is illegitimate no matter what. At least the other events were available in English copies of the game. As long as it is just a part of your collection, it isnt a big deal.

I use your videos as a guidepost as well as a motivator. I also have your videos as an inspiration to the fact that my LOSERdex challenge is doable. You are essentially doing both the L and the O portions of it! Finally enough the day that you uploaded this, I was just starting my gen 3 portion as well. I'm going to start working on breeding all of the shinies that I haven't gotten so far in this generation as well.

@reddevilgaming2577
@reddevilgaming2577 9 күн бұрын
@@knuckelz8923 it's a challenge that I made up that was inspired by Lyra here. It incorporates several already existing dex challenges but adds a ribbon master and origin challenge to it, meaning every Pokemon must be caught in their original debut generation/region. L - Living O - Origin S - Shiny (so a living shiny dex) E - Evil (Having all the Shadow Pokemon from Colosseum and XD) R - Ribbon

@@knuckelz8923 thank you very much! And it's definitely something that is ridiculously challenging but I think of it this way. Once this is complete, I can worry only about transferring up to the new games without having to restart the entire collection again and again. I'm even doing minimal, glitching or exploits to get those non-legal stuff. I think really the only exploit I need to worry about now is the DNS stuff in gens four and up to get those event mons again Justice for Spike-chu though
@DavidJCobb
@DavidJCobb 8 күн бұрын
careful about the "E" part. apparently, shininess is based on a Pokémon's personality value and OT ID in combination. iirc OT IDs change after you snag a Shadow Pokémon, so you can't know if something will be shiny until after you capture it. a Pokémon that's shiny in battle can revert after being caught

This and the early DS era were absolutely disgusting on pokedex completion. The GTS was the only saving grace for Diamond/Pearl/platinum, because unless I'm remembering incorrectly, if you didn't have interent access, you needed all of the stuff from the gamecube/gba era, plus at least Diamond and Pearl because of exclusives. 9 games to collect 492 pokemon, which with no Internet, you had to hope to make it to a Shaymin, Deoxys, Mew, and Darkrai distribution at least if I'm remembering correctly.

43:55 The concept of the food you eat being permanently stuck inside of you because you can't relieve yourself is kind of horrifying. I mean sure you don't *have* to eat in the pokemon universe but imagine having to second-guess if you *really* wanted that hamburger. On the other hand since food is tied directly to your contest stats that means if they could than it would possible for them to literally shit their brains out, which is an equally horrifying outcome. Maybe it's for the better that they have to hold it all in their entire lives.

My personal favorite method to complete the Pokedex in a generation is to basically do a co-op run: aim to complete it in *all the games involved,* to cut down on the amount of useless trade fodder I need to catch. It's a lot more work doing it that way but honestly, catching 'em all is for me the most fun I've ever had in the entire series. I completed the Pokedex on real hardware on Diamond version, on my age-old savefile I started when I first got the game shortly after it first came out (been sitting at 999:59 hours for years now, lol), using my two busted old DS's along with my 3DS's trading stuff across all the gen 4 games I owned. And on top of that I built a *living Dex* in Diamond as well, so I had to do a *lot* of level grinding to evolve my pokemon with the laggy battle system in Diamond/Pearl. It's probably my proudest achievement in my life so far. Your video is inspiring me to take on this challenge again. I love Colosseum and absolutely wouldn't mind playing through it again, it's my favorite game in the whole series and I'm curious how Gale of Darkness will compare to it.
