I really love how the lumineers modernized this video by having junior scroll through his instagram. This shows viewers that these problems are happening around us everyday. Kids are and have been put into unsafe environments and they can't do anything about it. We don't know half of the stuff that goes on in different communities. This video series is really eye opening.

The detail of everything the Lumineers create is astonishing. Starting the music at the point where it looks like it got the father’s attention instead of the traditional way of starting it when the person turns around. Putting no sheets on the son’s bed after his mother is gone to show the absence of her love. The breakdown of each family (from Gloria to Jimmy) happening in the same room with the same colored walls Impeccable. Heart wrenching. Art.

This entire series of songs and videos should receive numerous accolades for music, production, video content…they are beautiful and haunting. I am 54 and saw them live in May 2022. I have seen many bands live at this point in my life. This was the first time I couldn’t help but cry…the reality of seeing the poet, the artist, the musician was overwhelming to me. The Lumineers are really so good. It’s unbelievable.

ok so someone help me out here because we gotta fill in the blanks. The family tree is that Donna is Gloria's mother, Jimmy is Gloria's son, and Junior is Gloria's grandson so Jimmy's son. They're in the same house as Jimmy grew up in with Gloria as his mother who was an alcoholic. We assume Jimmy is also an alcoholic, but in this string of characters the only ones that aren't are Junior and Donna, which could be why we see the figure we know as Donna sitting on Junior's bed because all he wanted was a "mother for the first time" even though in Donna we hear that she hates the name Junior, so that could be the subtle connection between these two. We assume Jimmy's alcoholism was triggered by growing up with Gloria being a bad influence on him and creating these bad habits, and the reason Junior didn't turn to alcoholism we're assuming is because of the girl in "It Wasn't Easy to be Happy For You," which is why we see him scrolling through her Instagram page instead of drinking. This girl has become his coping mechanism with his life, even when she isn't still in his life since we assume they have broken up. We see the opposite with Jimmy at the end when we hear Gloria again because he sees a figure in the doorway that we assume was a love of his that he probably lost due to his alcoholism, just as Gloria lost her husband because of her alcoholism. We see twice in this music video, once when Jimmy tries to wake him up and the other time when Jimmy is chasing him, Junior attempts some sort of martial arts as a defense tactic which enforces the understanding that Jimmy abuses Junior. **Some of these might be a stretch or just flat out wrong; just trying to piece it together**

They played this for one of the first times at Bonnaroo in 2019. At the time, my mother had officially reached rock bottom and was living on the street from her addiction and alcoholism. I remember not being able to enjoy myself during most of the festival out of fear and worry for her. During lumineers set, he said this song is for those how have/are dealt with alcoholism in their life. This song heard me right then and there. Bawled my eyes out uncontrollably. Was able to enjoy myself for the rest of the weekend. This song will always be my fav from any artist never had a song do so much for me. I especially appreciate the part “maybe when she’s dead and gone I’ll get some sleep”. To me it’s the idea of not having to worry about her anymore.

Leader of the Landslide lyrics Every night I saw you there In your old wicker chair Singing, ooh You were wrong, I was right Didn't matter in a fight, ooh Coffee mug filled it up Always knew what it was Sing, ooh Been on your side for years You could never love without crying Is she dead, is she fine Every day, every night Fate has dealt me a lonely blow, I said, ooh Tried to help, only hurt In the end I made it worse Is she dead, is she fine Every day, every night Give back my keys, give back my chair Take back those clothes you always left on the floor You drove like wild, drove me insane Drank the whole bottle, forgot my name All I ever wanted was a mother for the first time Finally I could see you as the leader of the landslide She left, she left, the writing's on the wall Please believe me, I smell the alcohol The only thing I know is that we're in too deep And maybe when she's dead and gone I'll get some sleep You blamed it all on your kids You were young, you were innocent You told me a lie, fuck you for that Fuck all your pride and fuck all your prayers And all this time I waited for a fool Finally I can see you as the leader of the landslide She left, she left, the writing's on the wall Please believe me, don't answer when she calls The only thing I know is that we're in too deep And maybe when she's dead and gone I'll get some sleep Out there on my own I was feeling so alone Like a poltergeist in the afterlife Fading by degrees, I was shaking in the knees In the aftermath of this broken glass Ohh, ohh Ohh

My dad died a few days ago. We hadn't spoken in years and I had a plethora of valid reasons why but mostly because he was an abusive duck. This song always makes me think of him and the entire album reminds me of my crazy and dysfunctional family full of addicts and alcoholics but now that he is dead I can't stop listening to this song over and over again and crying. This album hits home for anyone who has had to break the generational cycle of abuse and addiction. It is a real masterpiece that manages to fully capture the pain, sorrow, and rage that some of us are taught is love by the very people we rely on to care for us.

My mom has been missing for 5 years now. This song has really been important to me... She was a homeless drug addict all my life who chose drugs over her family on a daily basis.. for 20+ years.. but I love her so much... I always had rose colored glasses on and couldn't see the bad in her.. I just idolized her.... Finally, 5 years after she vanished, I'm starting to mature and noticing all the bad stuff about her... As you can imagine, that fills me with immense guilt to think of her badly when she is still missing... it's been so hard to figure out mentally... This song.... Has helped me so much... It helped me come to terms with the fact that she was a bad mother... Not a mother at all my dad raised us all alone... it's a hard thing to realize when she is actively missing... I just want to thank you Lumineers for making this song. It has truly, truly helped me come to terms with this.

Carter Zane Man that's a Tall Order comparing them to Dylan. Now I love the Lumineers, but I named my son Dylan, not Wesley. Lol. See Dylan had released maybe six albums in the time it took the Lumineers to release three. And now all those six first Dylan albums were profound, and I do mean all. Since the Lumineers lost Neya, I'm a little heartbroken. Akin to when Noah and the Whale broke up, and the string instrument guy joined up with Mumford and Sons. Now you could compare Tom Petty or Bruce Springsteen to Bob Dylan. But you can compare the Lumineers to Joni Mitchell or the Band.
@Peanutifyer
@Peanutifyer 5 жыл бұрын
Steve Wilson I disagree, Wesley and Jeremiah are both great storytellers who continue to put out hits on every album, time is not a factor. I’m not saying the lumineers are better than Dylan by any means, but they are definitely the best storyteller band by far out today, and Bob Dylan was that in his hay day.

i get where you are coming from but no one is/was close to bob dylan. his songs and lyrics are iconic, collossal achievement. Thelumineers on the other hand are very much a modern band doing the old greats proud, and they are seasoning well, as always their music has meaning too it, and with that it reaches you easier. i love mumford and sons but i feel they try too hard now and stray into other musical styles, which is fine but original mumfords was a treat, its pleasing to see the lumineers work with what they are best at.

Watched it twice, here's what I'm gathering. Long comment warning. The dad is Jimmy (Gloria's infant son from the Donna & Gloria videos) all grown up. He's inherited his mother's alcoholism. At the halfway point of the video he offers the can to Junior, but Junior rejects it. Junior doesn't want to be his father and grandmother, wants to break the cycle. "Is she dead? Is she fine?" This could be a few things, I'm not sure but I think it might be a double- or triple-meaning. It could be about the dog. "You told me a lie." Jimmy told Junior the dog ran away, but Junior suspects otherwise. (Maybe - this doesn't hold up to all the lines.) More likely, it's referring to the woman at the end of the video, who I think is Jimmy's girlfriend. She's left him, which Junior is fine with but Jimmy can't accept. The video starts off, Jimmy's girlfriend and dog are both gone. Junior doesn't know the full story, except that they're taking out the trash and dog's collar with it. Junior wants to let this sit and deal with his emotions. He sees the dog again, and a woman who I think is Donna (his great-grandmother whose husband built this house). If that's correct, it's an interesting pick - it means he probably doesn't know who his own mother is, and doesn't see his grandmother as a reasonable role model either, so he goes back three generations to someone he's never met just to find "a mother for the first time." Meanwhile, Jimmy deals with his sadness by throwing a wild party, getting drunk, doing coke. All this makes Junior accept what he's known for a while, that his father is "the leader of the landslide" - wherever he goes, bad things follow. This is why he's able to reject the beer. He sees his father's destructive path and doesn't believe he's redeemable. One of the final verses goes: "She left, she left, the writing’s on the wall Please believe me, don’t answer when she calls The only thing I know is that we’re in too deep And maybe when she’s dead and gone I’ll get some sleep" If this is about Jimmy's girlfriend, it shows Junior doesn't want her to come back. He wants Jimmy to give up and move on so that maybe Junior can get some sleep. Then she shows up at the end - whether this is real or in Jimmy's head (as Junior's girlfriend was last video) is unclear. Bonus Notes: This seems to take place after "It Wasn't Easy to Be Happy For You." If you listen to the lyrics of that song, it's pretty clear that Junior and his girlfriend broke up, and he's remembering her throughout the video (she isn't really there). There's a lot on Junior's plate right now. In Gloria Sparks, pronoun "you" always referred to Gloria. I think the singer was intended as her husband, but could be wrong. In these past two songs, the narrator is Junior (or else all my rambling is way off), and "you" has been his girlfriend in the previous song and Jimmy in "Leader of the Landslide." At least that's how I'm hearing it, if someone has a different interpretation please say!

@@davidbjacobs3598 about the dog: two people are carrying the trash bag, which means it's heavy, and then the dog collar is on top of it, which suggests the dog is in it. Also, Jimmy is giving junior the shovel - to fig up a grave for the dog. What I'd say is that the woman we see might be Donna but maybe it's juniors mum - "Is she gone, is she dead" - that might référence Junior's mother, she left her alcoholic husband (Jimmy) but also left Junior and he's resentful about it... One thing that I can't figure out is why in Donna they sing "You hate the name Junior" I think that may key in in the coming videos

@@jordancedillo1170 That isn’t what I took from it. Watching it’s clear that they were once a happy family. The song stated that she left a note saying that she wanted a better or different life. That does not mean that she left because of Jimmy’s addiction. She could have just not wanted to be a wife and a mother anymore. It happens. No mother would leave her baby with an addict. Jimmy Jr. Was a baby when she left. The song also goes on to describe life after she left. Her leaving may have triggered Jimmy’s drinking and drug abuse. His wife leaves, he is struggling to take care of himself and his son and his bloodline is prone to addiction. I believe all of that turned him into who he is now, an alcoholic and drug user. That is what I took from it.

I really connect with junior. He’s witnessing the effects that alcoholism that has on families way after the alcoholic is dead. Alcoholism/addiction runs in both sides of my family. I grew up with a mum who was affected by alcoholism and struggled with it her whole adult life. I grew up with a dad who was an alcoholic himself and witnessed a lot of verbal and physical abuse as a result. I’ve never been one for conventional therapy, so sometimes just knowing that my struggle as a young adult trying to process how alcoholism has effected me is one that I am not alone with. Hearing stories like this reminds me there are others struggling with family member’s addictions and others that are trying to break a generational cycle. I want to thank The Lumineers for bringing light to this conversation. Often our focus is solely on the addict (which is rightly so) but we often forget about the destruction that has been left in the wake of addiction. Especially the emotional trauma children experience that they have to try to process sometimes way into adulthood.

Gloria is the Leader of the Landslide. The lyrics are from Jimmy's perspective, not Juniors. The Landslide is the knock on effect of addiction from one generation to the next. After listening to this a few more times I have a few new thoughts, but my previous comment is still mostly what I think :) I'll repeat some stuff since I feel like I get it a bit more now (apologies if this is a repeat of my previous comment). In chapter 1, both 'Donna' and 'Gloria' were also written from the perspective of Jimmy, her son. Chapter II I believe is a continuation but we're seeing Junior observe the effects his grandmother's alcoholism has had on his father, Jimmy. I truly believe Jimmy is doing his best to raise his son: 1) when he wakes Junior up to bury the dog this doesn't seem like it's the first time his Dad has woken him up in the mornings (ordinarily to get him to school whilst Jimmy goes off to work to support them both - Jimmy has a name on his shirt so he obviously works), 2) he looks on his son fondly just before tossing him a beer, he wants to include his son and he's happy he's there (of course Jimmy's concept of 'normal' is completely messed up because of his own child hood and ongoing problems with his alcoholic mother), 3) I think Jimmy bought Junior the dog (Rusty) to keep him company and help fill the hole left by Junior's absent mother (Gloria wasn't able to fill that gap for Junior, obviously). The lyrics seem to refer to Jimmy struggling with his mother's alcoholism, trying to help her and either Gloria left the family home of her own will or Jimmy has kicked her out for the safety of Junior. Jimmy wonders, 'Is she dead, is she fine....Every day, every night....Fate has dealt me a lonely blow, I said, ooh....Tried to help, only hurt.....In the end I made it worse.....Is she dead, is she fine....Every day, every night' When we see Junior scrolling through pics of the girl from 'It Wasn't Easy To Be Happy For You'....I think this confirms that she was a figment of his imagination. The pics aren't personal to him (not sent to Junior from his girlfriend) but pics of a girl he fantasizes about. It further illustrates how void of female affection Juniors life has been :( Also I don't think the woman Jimmy looks at at the end is necessarily related directly to the story but may signify Jimmy constantly trying to 'find a new woman' to bring into Jimmy and Junior's life.....but his destructive behaviour (alcohol and drug abuse) to cope with the rough life he's lead means that he never had healthy relationships with women. I suspect this woman is one in a long line of failed relationships for Jimmy. This might also be why Junior doesn't have a 'real' girlfriend....he's seen his Dad mess it up with the wrong woman so many times, he doesn't want to repeat his Dad's mistakes....and a fantasy girl can't let him down like every other woman in his life has!

I agree that even though this song is on Junior's chapter, that it is from Jimmy to his mom. Supporting evidence: The video opens and ends with us seeing Jimmy. The video is focused on Jimmy. "All I ever wanted was a mother for the first time, finally I can see you (Gloria) as the leader of the landslide". I believe the lyrics "she left, she left" refers to Bonnie, Junior's mother leaving them. And Jimmy blaming Gloria for the chain of events happening to him. "Maybe when she's dead and gone I'll get some sleep" could be Jimmy talking about his wife leaving. And as long as she's alive he may think she'll come back. Junior looks at their dead dog and remembers warmer times, or possibly just imagines things being different (he has sheets on the bed now, the dog is alive, and his mother is there and she's caring - it's definitely not Donna). The big thing for me is when the line "you told me a lie, fuck you for that". It would make sense if Jimmy is talking to Gloria here because she lied about who his father was. If she eventually told him the man who he thought was his dad wasn't, that may have been the beginning of his own alcoholism.

@@cgirl33 Thanks for adding your thoughts :) and I think you're right about the lyrics referring to Bonnie, Junior's mother. In Donna, line by line each lyric didn't necessarily refer to the same woman (sometimes to Gloria, sometimes to Donna) so this is probably the case with Leader of the Landslide too. I guess we'll have more information once the final instalment of the Junior chapter comes out :) :) So true about the 'you told me a lie, fuck you for that' lyric!!

When Junior remembers what I assume is his mother brushing his hair to the side, she looks similar to Cleopatra. I'm curious if the families are tied somehow since Life in the City has the line "And I miss my Dad and Cleopatras sittin on the phone"... Love the song nonetheless can't wait for the album

(Maybe - this doesn't hold up to all the lines.) @@isabellaolson-lamari6976 Haha this was all a while ago. Only skimmed my old interpretation, but I think the song "Jimmy Sparks" makes it clear that Junior's mother is the leader of the landslide. She left, she left, and that's what started either, why Jimmy took up the bottle and began his whole landslide, leading Junior to where he is now. In "Left For Denver," Junior is planning to go to his mother instead, but that was never going to help, she chose to abandon them, and finally returns for his father instead (with not very much success, depending how you interpret the ending).
