There are more than 2,000 firefly species, found on every continent except for Antarctica - an astonishing diversity of movement and light. Firefly scientist Wan Faridah Akmal Jusoh explores the mysteries of these little beetles that light up the night and details her quest to discover and protect new species as their habitats are at risk of disappearing.

What a happy happenstance. My mother and I have just been talking last night about fireflies. I lamented that I haven't seen one yet in my 40 yrs of existence when she told me that she used to see them a lot in our place back in the day. Thank you for this fascinating talk/share.

When I was a child, my father used to take my siblings and I to see fireflies (there was a lot!!) at night in a solitaire road near his hometown, a little town in the Araucania region in Chile. I keep that memory as a treasure in my heart

What an amazing person! So happy I watched this inspiring talk ❤️ I only saw fireflies one time, but that was incredibly beautiful. I wish we could find ways to saveguard their habitats and you know turn off all the lights that aren't so necessary.

Turn off outdoor lights. Never use herbicides, pesticides…and plant plants that are native to your area. And very important too…leave your fallen leaves, stop leaf blowing.

I agree but leaving dead leaves provides a habitat for mosquitoes which is a real problem in Malaysia or at least from when I was growing up 8-10 years ago.

That’s funny she mentioned in the beginning how superstitions her community is and I immediately remember my home town, when most people, including my family, were both very religious and superstitious. For quite a while I couldn’t understand that phenomenon, since I was a non-believer. I thought, if you believe a holy book (whichever it is in your case) and it clearly says how to behave to be under god’s care, why would you believe in different other nonsense, like, a black cat crossing your way, etc? Only when I got much older I realized that it just perfectly matches together. People just believe! In whatever. They don’t care, they just want to believe, so they do in several things, often simultaneously and not caring if those beliefs are compatible or not… Sorry, a bit off topic.

Interesting u caught the part where she mentioned about superstition. I live with one strong superstitious being. I find it ridiculous that I can’t bring out pillows from the house night time. It’s so ridiculous that I start to respect her beliefs cos she’s my mom. But what does it mean tho? I still don’t get it until now. Like another one, don’t lift ur legs up when ur lying on ur tummy. They say, u wish for ur mother to die, but in reality, it’s to prevent the ladies who wears night gown/ sarong from being exposed by doing so. Some superstition doesn’t make any sense. But others have their double meaning to it.
