The madrasah of Yskak bab /Babata / In the Footsteps of Kazakh Ancestors
Greetings, my cherished Kazakhs! This is the "Bilim Kazyna" Foundation's KZfaq channel. Welcome! Now we are at the district of Sozak. We will resume our podcasts "In the footsteps of our ancestors" in the Yskak bab madrasa in Babata, a village in the Sozak District of the Turkestan region.
Yskak Bab was a saint, one of the earliest Arab missionaries, and a direct descendant of the Prophet Muhammad. This man was one of the first Arabs to understand that Islam had to be spread among the Turks by peaceful means and that locals needed to be called to a new faith while still honoring their folk customs. Khoja Ahmed Yasawi, a well-known Sufi and preacher, is one of his notable descendants.
The chronicles state that Yskak Bab came to Turkestan in the eighth century, or in the 150s Hijra. In order to teach youngsters and convert the Turkic tribes to Islam, he constructed a mosque and a madrasah. He was buried there, and a mausoleum was built on the site of the grave. Since then, the place where the great sheikh rests is called Bab-ata.
